  1. We use the Rotatech oil and we have found it to be fine, bars dont seem to wear out any faster, so i would say its fine, its cheaper than most other oils but that depends on what amount you use we use 25-30 ltrs a week when out cutting, The best chain oil i have found over the years is by far the Exol heavy chain oil which i used to get from a local oil fuel dealer, but then one day they had none in stock and it was going to be about a wk before it was delivered to them so thats when i ordered 100 ltrs of the Rotatech and stuck with it every since,
  2. In my book every one gets a fair chance, if they dont make it, they dont make it, as i have said before on arbtalk, there is a lot of guys out there in the tree game who think they are the B,s N E,s but in real world they are about as much use as a windsreen wiper on a submarine, I am based about 3 mile from Myerscough collage and take a few lads on from there on a earn while U learn bassis, they come and they go and some just have the wrong attitude from the off, One lad of late came and stuck with us for for longer than any of the others have, He now has set his own buisness up and doing ok, but he has done it on his own back no loans or gifts off mummy n daddy but he will work, he rings me now and then and asks for addvise which i dont mind as he is the one who i dont mind helping, he is good to work with and gets on with it, Now others i know who was on the same collage course went and got jobs with arb firms and after a couple of months moved on to the next one and so on, what they where looking for i dont know, a cushy number i suppose but does that exsist in this industry ? a few i know are now doing diffrent things, like one is driving a parcell van, and another works in Mcdonalds which is where he should of gone at the start before going to collage,
  3. Read all the posts on here today and there seems a lot of negative posts about women in the tree game, but as some one said there are a lot of guys in this job with massive egos, there is a few lads i have worked along side over the years and the way they act and talk to other crew members is way out of order then they cant understand why yhr job took 3 hrs longer than planed, infact its not that long since i asked a climber who was being a arse, if he needed to come down and change his tampax if it would help with his attitude, I know of 2 women in this industry, one who works as a groundie for a arb crew, and to be honest about her she would fit in with in most arb crews and put several groundies i know to shame, The other one i met about 5 years ago when we where doing a small clearfell of some infected larch, we let the site out to a NPTC training guy to do some CS32 courses and one of the courses there was this young lady about 25ish, i had to run them through our emergancy procedure before they started and what a decent person she was to talk to, as there 2 day course went on she was the one that stood out above the others, OK she was not the strongest of people only being about 8-9 stone but she was not frightened of having a go or asking for help if she could,nt manage herself,at the end of the course she was the one who just got handed a pass slip and very little said, i watched this course on and off for 2 days and she was far better than the 3 guys there, she only needed telling once and it was done, her cuts where text book, her measuring, working out what logs was to be cut out of each tree was 100%, she delt with most issues with ease and she was the one i would of employed, i have seen a lot of wanabes come and go in this game over the years, the young lady above now works for the EA on a tree team clearing waterways etc and i believe she has done several more NPTC tickets since, so all i can say is congratulations to Joanne,
  4. 3rd & 4th photos that image looks like a woodpecker !!
  5. Yes i tend to agree with you on this one, as one guy i know bought 5 new 461s when he herd they had ceased production of them, and he wont be the only one who did that or simular sort of thing, the 441s where available and i think they still are from a few places like Honey bros, gusthearts or even FR jones,
  6. 461s are a good saw, plenty of grunt, i run 2 of them one with 20" and one with 25", i would not want to run a bigger bar but some lads do but that will depend on how much time you have, i find best combination is with the 20" bar, i find with the 25" bar i am all ways catching it on the floor due to being a short arse, the weight of the 461 is quite a bit heavier than the 462 or the 500i which i think is something to consider when buying a saw,
  7. You like me ? as a ten year old child would be better at doing things like that than o would be,
  8. And i stayed up all night for this !!!, i thought it was going to be a big release premier with red carpets and crowd control way you was talking, i thought we would of seen it in action milling something or even herd it running ??
  9. I would be wanting more than £70 a tonne for Elm saw logs, thats less than softwood chip prices, J quoted £220 which is about where i would want to be or even a bit more, we cant compare Elm with Oak really as due to its scarceness now a days and yet if you mention it to any one who does a bit of milling they rip your arm of for it and good Elm saw logs are not easy to find,,,
  10. I allways think if its cheap, simply dont bother as you will be forever repairing it, i was looking at there timber grabs after some one i know bought one and the first thing he did was take it apart and weld some gusset plates in it as he said from his expieriance it would not last long with out the plates added, another guy who buys a bit of timber of us has a firewood proccessor that he swears by but he wont be in a rush to get his wood done but he only does about 3-4 tonne a year for his own use, as the saying goes buy cheap buy twice i have been there and my look on this now is save/borrow the money to buy the best machine/item to do the job, it will pay in the long run believe me,
  11. that will be a interesting build project as there is a fair depth of water between Scotland and Northern Ireland like 800ft in the bueforts dyke which was all so used as a amunition dumping ground at the end of WW2, this amunition will of been dragged about by trawlers over the years and disspearsed every where, so should make some interesting news bulletins that one,
  12. As Pete has said tickets would be a good start and it would certainly get you a couple of rungs up the ladder, as you live in Cumbia give Cumbria woodlands a ring as they do chainsaw courses etc, when you ring them ask if there is any grant money available, as there is sometimes and its only available to those in Cumbria, as the saying goes if you dont ask you dont get, Good luck with it all,
  13. I wont be reading much on this post as it just winds me up HOW us as tax payers in many ways do not get a say in how our money Yes our money is spent, HS2 i think is a total waste of our money for several reasons, 1) they cant manage the rail system we have now, 2) said it will cut journey time from the north to london by 20 mins BUT how many times will this be achieved ? 3) will it get used and will it be profitable ? will we as the public ever get to know the facts n figures on how our hard earned cash used to fund HS2 is actually doing, like is it making more money to be spent on other causes ? i very much dowt that we will be just fed a total load of Bullshit as per usual,, About 12 months ago i read a independent report on HS2 and how it was to be funded, this made some very interesting and down to earth facts, the money that is to be spent on HS2 if it was divided up between all the local councils there would be enough funds to fund the NHS properly, all care homes could be brought up to standard, all schools could be brought up to date with sufficient teachers, all council run leisure centres could be funded properly , several parts of the country that have had sever flooding could be sorted out with long term flood defences, and the one that really affects me and many other people who drive, the cart tracks that we call roads which we drive on, all could be sorted out and made good like they where 20 years ago, there was many other facts that where stated in this report where HS2 money could of been spent on more needed projects, We now have a government that is handing out money left right and centre due to Covid-19 so it looks like the roads will have to wait another week or 2 and its not that long since we finished paying back the debt to America for WW2, and here we go again spend spend spend borrow borrow borrow, when will we ever learn never i suspect, Just let me escape to a remote desert island with Kylie and sheryl crow and that will do me,
  14. that one is a very grey area, it would all depend on who caught you and what you was doing ? if HSE caught you they would have a field day,
  15. I havnt read all the other posts past this one, last post on first stage, i would be talking to trading standards and i would be telling Stihl UK that and dont take any shit off them i am sure you will be in the right, it all sounds like a massive headache to me that dont need to happen, good luck with it all,
  16. We have one like that up here, tractor sales n service but he is a Husky dealer as well and if it cant be fixed with 2ft addjustable , 3/4 socket set and a 7lb lump hammer, it cant be fixed, they are US,
  17. not worth cleaning just replace it about 40p each, mine all get one every 6 months if we are out felling regularly,
  18. i did a ATV sit astride course about 8 year ago and went from preston to Lazenby up near Penrith, it was a eye opener for me and i lern,t a fair bit on the day, the guy who did it was called John Jones and he is still doing it and he is not expensive either, he supplied the bikes and trailers, we had 2 bikes one with manual foot opperated gears and a fully auto one as well, all quite new kit and a decent bloke as well,
  19. Yep your right there, but the law is the law, i thought it was for every one but it seems not to be like that, 2 other thefts i know of where treated all most the same way as the 6 tonne Kubota, one was a 2,5 tonne machine where the Police wernt bothered one bit, untill the owner spotted it on a traverllers site still sign written in his name then they said they would talk to the insurance company ??, and another one of late was a Volvo 2.8 tonne machine that went walk about 7 yrs ago, then the owner identified it on a ebay add as there was a addition to the machine he made and fitted for his own purpose, this machine has just come back to the UK from Spain and where ever it has been it aint been doing much as it went with 2300hrs on it and has come back with 3100 hrs on it, the owner of this machine has had the police involved and they have been very very helpful and we cant think why ! only thing we can come up with is the officers involved may be thinking they might get a trip to Spain (at our expense again) to investigate where and who it was purchased from,,,
  20. They havent got the man power or time to check camera footage !! well thats what a guy i work with now n then was told by lancs constabulary when his 6 tonne kubota digger went walk about on a ifor williams trailer behind a silver land cruiser, footage was off house CCTV where he was working and which ever way that digger went it had to go to a Mway junction which all carry CCTV cameras, this case was given a crime number and case closed in 2 hrs,,,,,, is this the service we pay for when we pay our council tax mine says Lancs constabulary £186 but whats it for ????
  21. Trust you to notice that one !!!!!!!
  22. Why 6.2 mtrs and 3.4mtrs ? saw logs are mainly 3.7mtr and 4.9 mtr, most mills will take logs down to 200mm tops
  23. Thats the same guy i go to for anything cabstar related, top guy all ways helpfull and a top notch service as well,
  24. Why bother with Ebay and have to go through all the hassall if some one arses you about you are getting offers off lads on here, just say what you want for it and you will more than likely sell it in a very short time, you seem to be very bothered about come back on you and i cant understand why ? As stubby said people buy cars and crash then injuring even killing people, that is not the fault of the dealer who sold the car to them, its opperator error !!!
  25. There is a fair bit to consider here, can it be straight felled ? or looking at it it has some top on it, how much damage cane you get away with round it ? if its to be partly dismantled thats time, the scare at about 7-8 ft looks suspect ? if you get it down and its rotten do yo still have to pay for it ? it could be some very expensive firewood!, if it was me i would walk away and look else where for a couple of logs that are down all ready and can be inspected for rot etc, as Trigger said at £200, if it was sound but you will not know that till you put a saw in it, that price would be ok, work your costs out and what you could possably get back out of it, the dessision is yours,
