  1. Yes visqueen down first and if tou wanted to put a waterproofing agent in the concreat mix there is several about, Freeflow is one that has a good name and when mixed at the correct proportions is very good, there was one called Medusa, made by Feb and it is a powder that you add to the mix, all the old school boys swear by it, but not sure if it is still available, Steel reienforcing ? why steel, i do a bit of work with a groundworks lad now and then and have done so for thirty odd years, he does a lot of stable bases and i generally end up there with him, we used to use steel but we have not used steel for 7 or 8 years now, we get what is called as fibber mix which is what it is concrete with 1000s of fibbers in it and if its good enough for airport runways its good enough for us, one big advantage with fibbermix is, there is no steel mesh to go arse over tit when you get your foot stuck in it and fibber mix dont go rusty,
  2. Ok mine is a older one but i will run it till it drops to bits, had it eleven years now and been the best truck i have had by a country mile, pulls like a train, carrys weight well , cheaper to insure than a transit, not bad on fuel, very easy to manover in tight spaces, only bad points i could say about mine is, it is not a truck to be travelling long distances in, as its not very comfortable, but ok 20/30.40 mile each way its liveable with, i have moved one hell of a lot of timber with my Cabstar and Ifor trailer,
  3. Reason why he keeps trying to buy it back Mick, is the tractor they replaced it with was a Valtra not new at the time about 3 yr old, it lost drive one day dragging some big Oak and Beech stems up out of a river bottom, the engineer who came out to it said it was a workshop job, John had to go and borrow his old county back to drag the Valtra up to the top of the hill ready to load on a wagon, John who now late 60s swore by his 1164 and when he got the invoice for repair to valtra it was circa 8k and he said the County 1164 including purchase cost and repairs over near 40 yrs had not cost him that much, still a very sore point with John this and all he ever says is all that money for a fucking radio, heater and a bit of glass in cab,
  4. I think Countys say it all about forestry tractors, used from the early 60s and still used widely today, Why well the first ones to be used widely where the Major based super 4 and super 6, then they moved on to the ford 5000 based units and continuing the super 4 and super 6 models then as things progressed the tractors got better power and better cabs, probably the 3 models used most in forestry where the 1124 1164 and the 1174, Ok there is no creature comforts in em but they have a lot going for them, first of all the major based ones where built on a back end that was like a lot of things of that era very drastically over engineered, after all nearly all the tractor pulling lads use major back ends putting 1000s of hp through em, then came the 5000 based units, some with a 4 pot engine like the 774 and 974 but the 6 pot engined 1164 and 1174 where by far the better forestry tractor, circa 120hp Ok its not massive hp but its how that hp is distributed to get the traction down, only driven a 1174 and it was a very impressive machine we moved 1000s of tonnes of shit with one towing a 20 tonne dump trailer, Ok it was not a tractor to drive many miles on the road but very impressive off road, so why County,s simple, reliable, well built, very robust, good reliable old school gearbox, good to work on and best of all no complicated electrics to go wrong, One guy i know had a 1164 that he bought in 1975 ran it with a igland double drum winch on it and then later fitted a cab mounted crane, this tractor worked in forestry from 1975 - 2014 and hardly let him down, fitted 2 new front hubs when one colapsed and apart from 2 hydraulic pumps,3 starter motors and a altinator, that was it and as he said it would all ways start even when it was covered in a foot of snow, since he sold it he has tried to buy it back every other week but to no avail,
  5. Can some one shed some light on a question, been reading the posts on this thread from the start and the question is have Big J and Eggs recently got married ? seem to be arguing a bit like a married couple ? or is it part of a plan they have hatched to get a cut of the £75 million issued for domestic abuse ?????
  6. Only one,s i have used are the stihl one of late, and back in the early 80s when i worked at a small saw mill there was one there that was a dream to use, handle would be 5ft + long but was it easy to turn biggish logs over, had a big hook on it that took no effort at all to get a really good hold on the log, but i would put money on it that it was from the 30s or even the 20s, felling bar total waist of time and money for turning logs, buy the proper thing you wont regret it,
  7. Well been today and as it had gone bloody cold here by dinnertime today i hardly so any one today, 1 elderly cyclist and 1 car parked in a lay by but that car is there every day from about 11am - 1pm as its a local guy who will be out training working Labs, so what a change as compared to the last 5/6 days and and all down to the temperature dropping by about 10 degrees,,
  8. As steve says and posted, should have Stihl stamped on the cutter, and the photo steve put up may have some age about it, as for may be the last 3-4 yrs stihl chains have had some little dimples in the drive link to aid oil distribution round the bar, other chains just have plain flat drive links,
  9. Doing the same run tomorrow twice first will be about 10.30 ish then will be going back about 3 ish to load for monday morn, Hate to think what tomorrow will be like but the weather will play a big part as its set for temps to really drop tomorrow ?
  10. Been extracting timer this week and what i have seen is beyond belief, hundreds and i mean hundreds of cyclists going past our hard standing stacking area next to a B road, its been a all day thing every day but afternoons have been very busy, most was in couples but there was some groups may be up to 12-15 and one group about 40ish all riding side by side, its not good practice given the present situation, then at the top of the woodland we are working on is a public footpath and thats been packed out all week with walkers and today i have been to change a wheel on a trailer and with in a 6 mile drive probably came across 40-50 cyclists ( or road lice as i call em) hogging the road and every lay by or where you could park a car there was one in it, my thoughts are just let them get on with it and let them do what they are doing but it will be the likes of me who will be laughing, dont go near any one and not worked with any one since all this shit started, and horses dont get me going about them, most are ok but some are total arseholes,
  11. first of all it is not a big tree ? looks to be 25-30ft max so not big at all, it looks like it would just fell out thats if there is no phone lines going across to the building, no rigging or lowering so £1000 way to much, ok i would do it for that by all means but a more sensible and fair price i would say £450-£550 2/3 men chipper truck etc, easy mornings work then another job or 2 in the afternoon,
  12. What your asking is you want a machine to take 50mm of the end of a 300mm round from arbe waist so you can pack it in to a nice neat package for sale, i think your barking up the wrong tree here, from 40+ years of being in the tree / firewood market, i think if you go and buy a machine to try and do the above i can just see it as a wast of money, and it would be far quicker doing it with a chain saw, what your after is a machine that will do what you want, and sometimes there is not a machine to do that task, but nothing is impossible, one thing i will say is arbe waste is very time consuming as nothing is the same length, the machine your after i think you need to build yourself and then it will only have the one use ?, chainsaw, hardwork and a lot of time may be the best/quicker/cheaper way to process your logs.
  13. Chinese cloned 660 ! I would not touch one but some people would, and how they get on with them is very debatable, another site i am on there is some lads who have them and with what comments i have seen about them, some say they are Ok others say there fantastic, but that man who said that his last saw was a 35cc Ryobi, reading the add, item location Chelmsford uk but the item is still in China takes 2 month to get here, personally i would stick with what brands i know and what brands i could get parts for with out waiting weeks,
  14. Slider next to log NO thats a big part of why your cable is coiling, when you set the chains leave about 10 links between log and slider, i dont have same winch as you mine is a Igland 4501 and there is 1 nut that you adjust the brake band with and then a external large hex nut you can fine adjust the brake,
  15. Hi only problem with trees out of someones garden is as Roughhewn says metal content, it spoils the look of the timber and dulls chains/bands, forest grown you will not get any metal and it will be nicer timber, Ash logs £70-90 tonne Oak logs £90-140 tonne Beech logs £ 75-100 tonne the above all vary as to the quality of the logs as some are much better quality than others, admiralty Oaks which where trees planted many years ago for ship building bring silly money but where do you find a 40ft Oak log that is straight clean and defect free in this day and age, there are not many left in the Uk today,
  16. Just take it off and put plenty of mono on underneath, but make sure that the mono goes on tight and level, been thinking where i got the 1000 mtr spool of whip lash from, i think it was from Uk hooks on the isle of white, just google it and ring him as he sometimes dosent put every thing on the website,
  17. Is this something else that has come across the water from Europe ? Pytothera in larch ash die back and the other one with the moths on the oaks ? if we keep going like this we wont have any trees left,
  18. Hi, read your post, then went and had my dinner and thinking how i could reply with out sounding harsh, but J has replied first and put it in a very good manner. 50 pound a tonne standing hardwood thinnings NO the prices J quoted are more like it, now if it was elm of oak may be but depending on quality ? J conversion of timber to split logs are about right, The cost of felling, processing (in the woodland in to movable lengths) then extracting to roadside, then transport to yard all costs money, add all these up along with your £50 a tonne timber value and your at some where around the £100 a tonne mark, you could buy it in for less than that !, proccessing in to firewood/logs you say wont take long, the volume your quoting is 20 arctic lorry load + you wont do that in a wk or 2 believe me, then you will need to have the space to work and some where to store the logs your processing with out them going black and mouldy which dont look a good product when delivered to the end user, you say you have a tractor but is it up to the job ? forestry is about the harshest work you will put machinery in to and it takes its toll, you say you need to buy forwarding trailer, processor , and build a kiln this also will cost and before you know it you will of spent more money than its worth and you will end up working your arse off for very little or even nothing, One thing i am going to say is you say you have little expeirience does this also mean with saws and the felling process ? as felling trees safely and correctly is not just a walk in the park, trees will hurt you and even kill you so be very careful, i have been in the job 40yrs and heard a lot of nightmare stories in this time, so be very careful, read the replies you get on here and you will get a better understanding of what you are up against, to be very honest when i first read your post my thoughts where good look your dreaming, and here comes another jam butty million heir, just think about it very carefully some times numbers on paper dont always add up to the realastic numbers of the practical side, Good luck,
  19. Typical, just sold one 1500ltr bunded complete with pipe nozzel and 110v pump, we removed it from a large factory where they renew there tanks every 5 yrs, was going to set it up for myself but a bit to big for me,
  20. never done it but i could imagine it being a nightmare with DVLA and insurance, just buy one thats ready to go, cutting and chopping is a lot of work/time and at the end of it you might have a vehicle thats not of any use to you, Land cruiser pick up ? Hilux surf pick up is there such a vehicle that would crop up on a insurance brokers list ?
  21. Is this of the DVLA website, ? as i have spent many hours on there looking for something that relates to AG weight ! Reason why, i have a vehicle which is plated at total gross wieght of 11200kgs with a tare weight of 6250kgs, but the said vehicle is now AG registered so is the gross weight plate now void ? I realise that this is a very grey area but its something i cant find much info on,
  22. try 07 not 08
  23. HMRC will look very carefully at all claims and those who have not played by the rules will be made to pay it back with a bit more besides, i for one will not be bothering with any grants loans etc as for what i would get would not be worth the hasell, looked in to universal credit the other wk and that seemed to be far better and eaiser to do and it will all so allow you to work a bit, as long as you declare it ??, i tend to think the SE have been shit on from a great hieght this time, but if you have been SE for longer than 3 yrs and have made plenty you will be ok, but for those who are either just starting or are on seasonal work and dont make much they dont have much option but sign on and make what you can of it, one thing i can see happening is that more SE like plumbers, sparkies garden maitainance will be asking for more cash payments, but thats where the government have pushed em to, we all need a SE self help fund tucked away some where, Some of us have been in simular hard finanacial times before with no government help but this time there is help if you are prepared to seek it out so for the younger generations just think yourself very lucky, I for one was pottless back in the mid 80s interest rates at 18% working 1-2 days a week really struggled to make ends meet and if it was not for fishing and shooting, meat on the dinner plate would of been once or twice a week,
  24. There is a company in Southport Lancashire Called Glassplies i have dealt with them for over 30 yrs all ways helpful and they supply about every resin on the planet in both large and small amounts they have a website and do mail order, Hope this helps,
  25. Yes and thats near on 30 years ago, and if any body thinks its going to be a walk in the park to day and be so easy, well it ain,t the person in question will have some serious questions to answer and believe it or not HMRC will know the answer before the question is asked but you will get your chancem but you will have to have a fantastic memory and be very cleaver to avoid any penaltys, good luck,
