  1. Attended a meeting in early December re grants and ended up on a local estate where they demonstrated the head they had received a grant for. It was on a 6 ton machine which the estate already owned. Cannot remember the manufacturer of the head, they reckoned this was the first in the country but it was £60,000 and if you ask me too heavy for a 6 ton as the machine kept tilting forward with the rear of the tracks off the ground when it was handling the timber. They estimated total investment was £130k!
  2. Whilst I worked for a high street bank and earned a decent wage, it wasn't fantastic. The good money is if you're in banking,ie investment or corporate banking!! Quite often used to meet people who would say, "Ah, you're in banking?" and I would reply, "No, I work for a bank!" The difference??? At least a few hundred thousand pounds!!
  3. Never seen them advertised, could be cheaper to buy a better truck.
  4. One of my shooting friends had a Pinin some time ago and I remember the throttle went. wasn't just a cable, it was electronic I think and cost £1200 to correct - obviously it was just a few months out of warranty! If the engine is running rough may be worth having it Terracleaned - cleans fuel lines out and decarbons parts of the engines. Apparently Mitsubishi engines, espec in L200, are prone to carbon in manifolds.

  7. Snow might be good for the firewood orders but it soaks in to the roundwood outside!!
  8. Glad to hear you have plenty work booked in Paul, you deserve it after all your hard efforts over the last few years.
  9. Very good Chris!!!!:thumbup: I've lost many hours on Pinterest looking at pick ups, 4 wheel drives, etc!
  10. http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=toyota%20landcruiser%2062&term_meta%5B%5D=toyota%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=landcruiser%7Ctyped&term_meta%5B%5D=62%7Ctyped Don't look here then Chris!!!
  11. How much are they Scraggs and where did you see them?

  13. The example quoted to me was a building firm who had two self employed plasterers who only worked for them, on days they told them and with their equipment. When investigated by HMRC they stated they should have been employees and the amount of back tax claimed was sufficient to close the company down. Probably as with a lot of things, it's what people get away with.
  14. If they work solely for you then they are an employee and I have heard HMRC have requested back payment of taxes from the time the "self employed" person started working for the company.
  15. I have some spalted beech (I think), a 6 foot and a 9 foot length and was wondering what it would be worth to a wood turner. It was a single 9 foot length but has been split in half. Any ideas on value?
  16. I have a similar rating for Land Rovers - bog; mod; or rad! Obviously bog is bog standard, mod is modified so that could be spot lights, snorkel, etc and rad is radical - loft kits, roll cages, monster mud tyres.
  17. Where do you get the cheese from??? Black Golds are shotgun cartridges!!!
  18. I would have thought you would struggle getting 2.5 ton on that trailer. Looks like just over a ton with the full load he has on there.
  19. Went to a meeting about grants recently and a previous recipient of a grant did a presentation on applying for grants. One of his final sentences was,"And for gods sake don't believe the business plan you put together to get the grant!"
  20. I have customers ringing me at 9am on a Sunday morning to place log orders which does get my goat. I wouldn't mind if as others have said it was after 11am. It's not that important that they have to ring so early on a Sunday.
  21. It is a Rokon 2wd motorcycle
  22. That has been advertised for about two years and as far as I can remember when my mate rang about it it had just been sold but others were available!!!! Tread carefully if you pursue that one.
  23. Depends on a lot of things - how much do you want to spend for a start. How much do you anticipate tonnage wise being able to sell? What are going to use as a raw material - are you buying in timber to process? Do you have access to a tractor for pto power or do you go electric - careful as most are three phase. As for suppliers try Caledonian Forestry for Palax, M Large for Hakke Pilke and Wilsons for Posch. The three quotes have to be for similar machines, ie three different manufacturers machines that have similar spec. Good luck in applying for a grant; I have been to a few meetings run by the Forestry Commission and they reckon the grants should be out in a few months time. However, they reckoned the chance of getting a grant for a firewood processor was slim as a lot had been given for this purpose in the past. Don't forget if you go for the grant you have to pay for the item outright before you claim the grant funds back. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
