  1. Thanks everyone for compliments. It takes a fantastic edge. Will shave hairs beautifully.
  2. It's a hawthorn. Possibly the remnant of an old hedge.
  3. For me it depends on the hedge. Always tend to get gnarly, short grain thorn nowadays:thumbdown: With this type of hedge I like to get stakes in as the pleachers are never as strong. If it's competition stuff or a nice clean young hedge then the stakes can go in later. Tend to be able to get a better line this way.
  4. Named ajter Duke of Wellington. Battle was about 40 years before they were introduced.
  5. Leaf spring? Good steel for froes so may do the job.
  6. Got the old hairdryer. Probably going to use a brake drum off a wagon. No anvil yet so may make something from a piece of railway track. All this will happen just before I burn the garage down:001_smile:
  7. Thought I'd have a go at making a knife. The steel was cut from an old circular saw blade which I hardened and tempered. The handle I cut from a walnut log which I glued on and dowelled with three pieces of laburnum dowel. The yellow spacer was a piece of plastic I found. I left the blade the colour it was after tempering. Got the bug now so want to make a small forge:001_smile:
  8. Could also be a Saxon boundary or medieaval deer park boundary. Later enclosures of the 18thC tended to follow field strips or were straight with only a small bank thrown up if a ditch was dug. Nice trees.
  9. Standard highway clearance is 5m which is around 16 feet.
  10. Sawn stakes are around 50p.
  11. Sounds like an online version of The Arboriculturist's Companion.
  12. Picture of an interesting Wych elm pollard with a macabre past. I'll just post a link if you're interested. Is this the Bella in the wych elm? Unravelling the mystery of the skull found in a tree trunk - Home News - UK - The Independent
  13. Got a broom like that. Had two replacement heads and three stales. Best brush I've ever owned.
  14. Climbed in one for 20+ years. Been in modern stuff for years but I'd go back to one tomorrow. I'm turning into a real Luddite
  15. Have to agree. Beautiful shots.
  16. How about some of these to speed the job up
  17. I once used a contractor on stump removal with a Becker. First stump he went into ripped up a high pressure main. Pipe was off supposedly marked route and was not at minimum reccommended depth. Gas company wriggled out of it along with contractor. Luckily insurance co paid. Be careful.

Had a look at the saw. Extremely clean with a 30" bar so it's mine now:001_smile:
  19. I had to study that a while to make sure it was the same tree.
  20. Anyone wearing tracksuit/hoodies etc should be shot on sight. Seriously hope you get lucky with getting it back. Makes you feel sick when things like this happen.
  21. Building is no longer a pub and has changed appearance but the oak tree remains. First shot from c1900.

Going to look at a s/h one. Don't need it but are there any weak points to this saw I should be looking for? Do they have a good reputation? Thanks.
  24. If you're winching over the crest of a bank don't attach the cable at the end of the trunk. Get it well down the length. It'll make it far easier to get the timber over the crest.
