  1. It is the same with anything these days. if you are awear of the risks you can ensure that you do not put yourself in a position where it becomes a problem. However it is always the unexpected that causes the problems, like a wasp sting on the neck.............. Buttocks i have just fallen out of the tree
  2. It's not often that you get Crib goch to yourself
  3. I would not fancy using a tirfor to drag the logs 50 meters, it will take hours. And you will loose half of you body weight in sweat. I would see if a local farmer can hoik it out with his tractor. The logs will also be alot less dirty, and the saw mill wont worry about stones in the bark
  4. Leave the poor thing alone, there's nothing wrong with it !
  5. ~You have to play by their rules. The six weeks start when it appears on their system. However they have to complete within eight weeks to comply current legislation, or you can complain.
  6. We have been talking about this today, and i still can not think why it does dry quicker.
  7. I thought that you could not claim for clothing unless it is PPE ?
  8. The last time that i sprayed around young trees i got 15 pence per tree, and they provided the herbicide. Good work started at first light got to listen to the dawn chorus. If you are work in a remote area you will need a 4x4 and a trailer that can carry a couple of hundred liters of water. Once you get your eye in so to speak you can spray around the tree faster than you can walk past it.
  9. Thems is some gert lumps of wood flying through the air
  10. This is the lever I bought; eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace I would ask the seller, it says on the page 'feel free to ask any question' I would do that, particularly as you are going to need a new one
  11. I have been using a Thor 12 ton hydraulic for the past 3 years. It has never let me down, and the only maintainance it needs is a regular grease. I have modified it so that it can be used one handed, handy when splitting 40" lenghts. We are using a nuffield 10/60 to power it, which is fine, but we have borrowed a 100 horse power tractor which makes the splitter unstopable. This is good for knotty wood as the splitter will cut the knots that do not split. It also has a hammer action if you want to send the pieces into the next county !
  12. I might not know much but that is definitely not an oak leaf ! Hope that helps
  13. Whilst we are on the subject, i am after a 3-4 ton winch
  14. If you can get through to somebody to get an engineer out, i will eat my chain saw trousers. It is cheaper to break the line and get and get it fixed. Just make sure that every body who will be affected knows that the phone will not be working. Then you can have fun playing who can bounce the biggest piece off the line without breaking it. You will be amazed how much abuse a BT line will take !
  15. :dito:
  16. Size also matters. If you catch the tip of the chain on a bar bigger than 18", by the time it gets to the saw and clog it, it is already cutting into your leg. Ye haa, feel the pain......
  17. AH HAAAAAAA (In an Alan Partidge voice) You mean something like this Topiary Arts
  18. Wot be cloud pruning ?
  19. Not todays sunset, but one from january. working just behind the beach, so i stopped to let the dog have a run before heading homewards.
  20. Dead ivy is worse by infinity than alive ivy. Ivy trees are like laylandii, there aint no easy way, and it make the job difficult, a pain in the backside, awkward, etc etc Have fun !!
  21. Cedars have floppy tops Sitka spruce foliage has a blue hue to it, Norway does not. Spruce are spikey, firs are soft Larch and swamp cypress is brown in winter
  22. You need to speak to somebody at either english nature or your local wildlife trust. They will be able to provide vast quantities of infomation about the negative effect of laurel in woodlands. You also need to approach your parish council to lnform them about what is proposed and to spreed the word to the local nimby's, so there will be less outrage at the damage to woodlands. Good luck
  23. I have finally scrounged enough metal to build my own skidding frame. Carrying on the fine tradition of bodge it and scaper. Or in this case skid. And before anybody points it out, i know the welding is not very good, but it works:001_tt2:
  24. You don't learn by not doing it. I expect that every member here, has had a nightmare with conifers, particularly laylandii. Always add an extra day to the price and explain to the cliant that this is the top price and if you get it done quicker the price will come down. Most people are happy with this. We keep a photo record with times and costs so that we can match the tree to the photo, which has proved to be helpfull to customers
