Long gaffs are good on thin bendy poles, as your foot is not in contact with the pole it gives you more room to maneuver your feet with limited space. Incidentally, at what point does everybody stop climbing up, mine is when i can feel the pole flexing between the spikes and my strop !

Me and the family planted 40 or so trees for the tree o'clock event. I have still not heard weather or not we broke the record.

I've done it, not the most exciting of courses, but i can now plant a tree the right way up !!

Are we talking about the tree o'clock event, if so: i spent an enjoyable morning with my family, and lots of other families planting trees. Some trees were planted badly and not as the guidelines. these trees probably won't survive but that is not the point. The point is that these non tree people were out in the rain planting trees so that they can make a difference in a small way. Lots of small changes can make a difference. When the children grow up they will be able to say they planted this wood. What can be better than that. If it's not about the tree o'clock than ignore the above rant -
Its making my arms aching just watching it. Thank god they don't grow this big in dear old Blighty

Follow both cables to where they conect to the casing, that is normally where my go, and the fault is normally buried under the oily crud. Happy hunting

Is there a simple way of estimating standing volume of timber. I need to know for the felling licence. My normal method is climb a couple of trees with a logging tape to measure the tree and guesstamate. However this is for 13 acres of clear fell. Can anybody help ?

The dumper is sixteen horses of throbbing power, with a hydraulic winch. The rope on the wood splitter was mark one conversion to one handed use, Mark two is some 15mm copper pipe crimped on !

At least they want to pay for the logs, i have had five people ring up now asking if i had any free logs !!

Cleaving the wood, rather than sawing it will also increase the life of the fence, as the wood fibers are left in tact. Oiling it will help, but the wood will have to be seasoned or it will rot from within, as the moisture will not be able to escape. For the ultimate organic fence, plant a hedge and then lay it 5-10 years later, as it is still alive you wont need to treat it with anything, and it will out live us all

I think you need to get some more information from your prospective client. They should have a list of requirements for the job discription. With that pricing the work becomes much easier. -
Going back to the thread. The first aid training that i have had in the past has been St Johns or Red Cross, and has had very little relevance to most things that might happen in the field. Consequently i have not bothered in renewing it. The last first aid course i did, one of the other people on the course first aid kit comprised of a roll of gaffer tape !! (turns out that he was an ex paramedic, and he still had to do the course) there is nothing that can not be solved with a bit of the magic tape.
