  1. Hi ther Lyn Ed, I am based in Pembroke, and the work is in Lawrenny, so less than an hour from you. If you could find out if he is interested, it would be much appreciated. I am off to Gloucestershire for the rest of the week (hoping to get to Westernbirt for some autunm magic) but i will check this. If you have any luck my mobile number is: 07966 792798 Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree at 100 yards
  2. Probably one of the biggest in Wales now. Process unbelivable amounts of firewood each year. When you see some of the stack of firewood, your brain goes into meltdown trying to work out how many hundreds of tons are there ! Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  3. Credland firewood down the road has a shredder that is the size of an artic lorry trailer (specially imported from the USA), and i have yet to see anything that will not go through it. However with the largest screen, the biggest chip size it will produce is 2-3" which are not quite big enough. I do noy know weather the screen can be removed totally, but i will find out. Cheers for the tip Buzz Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  4. Thank you all for your response. Mike and his monster chipper has already been out, but it was too slow. The corkscrew counld not pull in anything smaller than 4". Consequently we had to sned out each tree before it went into the chipper. Also it is disigned for slabwood, so it will chip 10" horizontally but only 5-6" vertically. Which is why we are looking for a bigger machine. Cheers everyone Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree 100 yards
  5. Is there any one out there with big chipper. I have approx 200 trees felled out and stacked in a field that are needed to be converted into chip for a cattle corral. The chip needs to be 3-4 inch pieces, and the machine needs to be able to cope with 15" very knotty pine. The work is in far west wales, any helpfull or unhelpfull advice would be appreaciated. Cheers slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards. P.S. how do I get pictures from my computer and post them on this here forum?
  6. unit 32 is the same as unit 31, but the trees make a louder bang when they hit the ground. The boring you will need to do takes quite a bit of practice particularly on uneven ground if you have not done much before (practice on some high stumps). When you have cut the mouth, score a line around the tree with the saw level with the bottom of the mouth. This helps to keep everything level. Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree at 100 yards
  7. I bet the saw cuts do not comply with with BS 3998 !! Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  8. How long before the oak falls over the decking and/ or the house?? Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree at 100 yards
  9. WE brought an old nuffield tractor 18 months ago for £800. The tractor is simple enough that we can fix most problems ourselves. We have improvised a skidding plate from an A frame with a 5mm plate welded across the bottom. This would work well for your chestnut poles and is cheap to set up. Once you have a tractor then the world is your oyster for attachments, which will speed up your output. Good luck Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  10. I have been using a thor splitter (not sure witch one as the label have warn off)for a number of years. Can't fault it, it has never broken down, and dispite a number of years use and misuse it keeps working. We are running off a 60 hp tractor, which will cope with most knots. Howevever it has been used on a 100hp tractor in the past which turned a good splitter into a brilliant one, that will cut through any knot without slowing down. My only quibble is because it is a vertical splitter that will split upto 45" lenghts, it is an ungainly beast to move around when it is off the 3 point linkage! Happy splitting Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  11. If it is still on the tree, give it a gentle prod, if it: rears up, retracts its head and sways menacingly, then it is probably an elephant hawk moth. However it does look more like a convolvulus hawk moth. the difference between the two is that the elephant hawk moth has two large eye spots just behing the head. Dont ask how i know, Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree at 100 yards
  12. I've used both, and the timberland fingerless gloves lasted much longer. i think that they do reduce the amount of vibration because when my dog decided to eat one for his lunch, and i had the rest of the afternoon with only one glove, and i could feel the difference. 13. Get the biggest heavyest lathe that you can afford. Small lathes are good but you quickly want to turn bigger items which becomes increasingly difficult. Most woods can be turned green, you just have slow the drying out process. Burying it in the shaving from the bowl works well. Or make the sides thin enough to flex in the drying process. However when you make the sides too thin the bowl goes bang very suddenly !!! Happy turning Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree from 100 yards
  14. If you foot lock the slack through, it almost becomes self tending. Or If you like toys then a panten strapped to your foot. Of if you want one handed self tending, then put the trailing rope through a pully near your top anchor, and then back to you. This makes branch walking easier, particularly when dismantling Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree at 100 yards
  15. If the tree is in an isolated spot why go to the trouble of carrying out the work, why not let it just do its thing ? Slack ma girdle i can spot a tree from 100 yards
  16. Having Watched Chris Beardshaw cut the old yews at Aberglasney to about 2' high, i tried the same for an old customer. It died !! However i tried the same a couple of years later, and it has grown back beautifully. I would take some cuttings before you start, at least you will have some backup. Good luck Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree from 100 yards
  17. All trees dies, and if the tree is 200+ years old, then it has had a good innings. Apple trees are not long lived. However some pruning might help to breath some new life into the tree. But if the tree has not been pruned for a long time, and you are too heavy with the pruning the resulting regrowth can be too much for the tree to sustain. Little and often over the next 3-4 years should help, and will not encourage too much vigourous re growth. If all else fails find someone in your local area to take some grafts next winter, so that when the tree dies,it will still live on. Also do you know what variety it is? there could be some interest if it is an unusual variety Happy pruning Slack ma girdle I can spot a tree from 100 yards!!
  18. Practice on a small tree, so that height is not an issue. Ditch your main anchor, and use two short rope of about 25'. the main anchor becomes a hinderance when you are working above it. With practice and more importantly confedence you should be able to use anchors of about 1 1/2" in diameter. The key is to keeping equal weight spread across the anchors. This mostly works for me as a fifteen stone climber!! However once i get above 70' the anchor points drop to around 3", and the rods and saw head come out
