  1. I'm glad to see that they have produce some slightly more readable versions of RR669. It is a good document, if a little on the weighty, and dispite my best efforts i tend to loose the will to live after i have read more than five pages.
  2. I'm sorry to say it, but that is the gayest tractor that i have ever seen...... Looks like it should do the trick though
  3. We run a thor 12 ton vertical that can split 40" logs, on the back of a Nuffield 10/60. The power is fine for most logs, but the return speed is a bit slow. We some times use a 100hp Same, which doubles the speed of the ram. You may find that the flow rate and the hp of the major (50 i think) gives you a very slow splitting speed, and not able to cope with knotty wood
  4. Somebody has not done their BS5837 !
  5. That there be a tidy pile of timber. Just logs, or are there any saw logs lurking ?
  6. Pure quality, you can not beat getting down to the basics:thumbup:
  7. Try malus 'golden hornet', or one of the varigated hollies, but that might cast too much shade.
  8. If i sold them i 3' lenghts, i would have to sell them for less. So no chance !!
  9. Please can you define what you mean by a billet ?
  10. HA Ha Ha, :heeeelllllooooo: pity about the tree
  11. Like the tractor and winch, what are they ?
  12. Find out what guideline they are working to, i.e. NPTC or electricity company, and stick to them. That way when they start kick up a fuss, you can show them what you can and can't do as it is in black and white. We did the same thing with the lack of earths on shut downs, and refused to climb. WPD kick up a big fuss, but when we read their rules to them, there was a lot of muttering, but earths majically appeared and the job was done.
  13. The probable reason is the possible risk of a widow maker, i.e. the truck splitting as you send out lumps of wood. The splitting can pin you to the tree, and in extreme cases crush you. You are perfectly entitled to use your side rings, but you must back it up with some kind of chocker around the stem. This can be your main line, or a custom made chocker. Some teach that you cross over the strop before you go around the tree, therefore the strop is self chokering in the event of a slip, or being shaken off your spikes. This stops you bouncing down the pole. However this method is a killer on the hips as it pinches.
  14. Hi Sean, sorry to jump on the band waggon, but i have just been asked to compile a tree report to comply with BS5837. Any chance...........?

  15. One of my customers has a nice cherry, which is riddled with blossom wilt. I have now removed all the infected wood, and removed from site. According to the bible, diognostic of ill health in trees, there is not much else that can be done. However i did think that spraying the affected areas with a weak solution of Jays fluild might get rid of any remaining fungal spores. IS THIS A GOOD OR BAD IDEA, or will it have a detrimental effect on the tree ? Advice helpful or otherwise appreciated
  16. When i get time i like a bit of this. i have just start this bowl and it probably take the next month to finnish. I also enjoy battling the slugs and snails in the garden and trying to grow veg for the table
  17. A common stipulation in planning consents in these here parts, is that once planning has been granted that no trees can be cut down until bulding regs have been signed off. However our much inlightened tree officer has now said that if a five year management plan is drawn up and the owner agrees to stick to it, this rule becomes much more flexiable, and stops total tree annihilation once the building regs are signed off.
  18. Are you sure that you have enough on the trailer, i can hear the axles creaking from here !
  19. Hi john, how much are you wanting for the winch ?
