  1. I use road trip on the iphone
  2. The app does just that, you input the mileage reading, number of litres added and cost per litre. I use it as a means of tracking vehicles expenses including tyres, servicing, etc for the van and land rover. It also means I know what receipts I need to find come accounting time for the van. Yes you could just get the calculator out but having all the data together means you can see trends etc.
  3. You can't claim 45p a mile and all the other expenses that go with running a motor. The 45p is worked out to be an average total running cost for a vehicle taking into account the servicing, tax, insurance, depreciation, etc, etc. This usually applies when using a personal car for business not a van bought specifically for work The easy way to work out what you can list as an expense (claim for in your words) is anything that you would not have bought/spent had you not gone to work. i.e. you need it to be able to do your job e.g you can list safety clothing but not your normal clothing as you would need that anyway. Food and driink is a contentious issue. Some people think you can claim for your dinner each day but surely you would still eat if at home. There are exceptions to this one.
  4. If you have it in writing that the seller will pay any bill in full for the machine to return it to a usable condition and that is the repair you have had done then send by recorded delivery a letter to the seller stating you have had the repair done (as agreed), the bill is £x and as per our agreement you have x days to settle this bill. If the bill is not settled by date x then I will be submitting papers to the small claims court. You need to make sure that the work you agreed with the seller is the same as that carried out by the workshop. You do not want the seller saying he agreed to a new battery and small electrical repair and you have had a full overhaul done. You have bought a 13 year old machine not a new machine with warranty.
  5. 30-40 hours max a week using subbies as and when required. Work 4 days start around 8.30 and always finished before 4 plus a few hours a week quoting and sorting kit. This gets me close to the VAT limit. The wife works a lot more hours than I do and earns more than I turn over so I am primary care for the kids and run the house, shopping, etc. The tree work is just to stop me getting bored when the kids are at school and it funds all my shooting.
  6. I'll second FR Jones, I broke the top handle on a 201T. They had one on the shelf and it was in my hands within 20 hours - 200 miles away!! My local dealer said they would have to wait before they could even order it never mind deliver. I am sure the other sponsors are just as good but I tend to stick to FR Jones as every dealing has been without fault and really well priced.
  7. I have recommended that before to a client who was selling their house and catagorically needed there knackered coni hedge to be green again. I told them I couldn't work miracles and it was dead, the only option for making it green again was to paint it. I got a phone call the following weekend telling me they had followed the 'advice' and it now looked better than ever!!!
  8. You might look at £20 here or ther at a show but if you are going purely for the 'bargains' work out how much it will cost you to get there for the £20 saving
  9. Rob, Don't forget each state then adds a local tax, some around 10%.
  10. armchair arborist has something similar. Have a look back through his posts for pictures or send him a PM
  11. Oh dear, prepare to spend like it's going out of fashion.
  12. Ed as he is towing with a heap of a landie thats 25ft tall and there will probably be the splitter hung off the back of the ifor as well with no light board
  13. 15kw stove with back boiler can do 2 heaped wheel barrow loads in a day if I stay in. I also put a bucket full of smokeless coal on at night. House is nice and warm now but when we moved in mid october it had been empty for 12 months and was at 6 degrees. These old stone houses take some real heating back up!!
  14. My 130 TD5 came from G&S drakes, they had 2 at the time both around 50k miles (severn trent water) then loads at 160k+ miles (leccy board). I had next to no trouble with mine in 4 years. It might be worth giving him a ring to see if he has anything knocking about or knows of anything, his place is quite big but seriously disorganised.
  15. Justin, they are not proper logs but the compressed sawdust fire bricks. If you burn normal logs you will receive a bollocking from the management for breaching health and safety (don't ask how I know!!!). Alternatively just clean the stove yourself every day before the maids come in.
  16. That is why you do a full wrap, cover everything
  17. Check facebook for onsigns or shy tot graphics. It's a mate of mine that runs the above 2 companies, one for comercial vehicles and one for the japanese (etc) performance cars. His websites seem to be down hence the need to search facebook.
  18. vinyl wrap instead? I had the cab of my transit resprayed in white for £80 including treating the rust on the arches. There is a bit of you get what you pay for but I could get it redone every year for 10 years for the price listed above!!
  19. The 130 TD5 I had got serviced on schedule, rear suspension bushes most MOT's and had a replacement front diff in 4.5 years. The new one has had nothing yet but is due the 48k big service with all oils and the clutch is on its way out so that will see me £600+ at an independant specialist. It's not just the fuel to think about when comparing costs to your citroen, servicing, tyres, etc will be significantly more money.
  20. Averaged 24.99mpg over the last 6500 miles in the 110. It does have a stage 2 tune and runs on BFG muds though so sups a bit more than standard but at least half that mileage is up the M6 to Scotland. From what I have been told you will get slightly better MPG and slightly better towing characteristics from the 300TDi but you will need a damned good tool kit and plenty of knowledge/time as they need to be kept in a very good state of service/tune. The TD5 although slightly down on MPG needs nothing more than servicing at the recommended intervals. Early TD5's suffer from oil in the engine loom which can be expensive if it is left unchecked.
  21. Who pays who at the end? Are you working for him dragging his brash or is he working for you climbing? Are you paying him for the job or day rate? You are on dodgy ground there, to me there isn't a clear cut who works for who. If something went wrong is it his mistake on his companys insurance or is it his mistake on your insurance as you have got a subblie climber in
  22. NFu tried to put on a height restriction but I said it wouldn't work. It took a bit of sorting but by changing the type of policy with NFU from a jumped up landscapers policy to s specialist trades policy the height restriction was gone. I am still restricted to no motorway work or railway work (or work within 2 tree lengths of either) but i don't do that anyway. Take your time when buying the policies, read everything twice and if in doubt ask for clarification in plain english in writing.
