  1. I too have a small grinder which can earn a nice top up to the days pay while the other lads are finishing the raking, chipping, sweeping etc. Most stumps take around 10 mins to 1/2 an hour and the grinder is small enough to take on the back of the chip truck if there is limited chip to go away or on the log trailer behind the landy if there is likely to be a lot to remove. I bought it second hand and it has paid for itself a number of times now. If I was hiring one I would have to save up all my stumps otherwise that extra £50 for the stump isn't worth doing when you have £42 in hire costs plus a bit for the fuel. Kev
  2. His buy it now is only £2.50 less than a brand new one from Jonesie
  3. I have had a couple of calls this year asking if they can see the log showroom??? Also last year I had to teach someone how to build a fire as they were trying to light a brick sized lump of ash with a match and phoned to say my logs wouldn't burn. I've just got this stove but it's bigger than Mrs Jones one at number 16 you know.
  4. Do we have any idea of the age of this item?
  5. Like Bigdave has said, if it is on the insurance register then it will not be worth the same as an unregistered car. For a start Audi cannot sell a car that is on the insurance register as approved used. If you had a choice of 2 identical cars, one that you knew had been in an accident even if it was repired by Audi which would you choose? For your claim ask Audi to give you a trade in value now and a trade in value if it wasn't on the register and take that to your insurance. You are entitled to out of pocket expenses and all you need to tell them is you had agreed a sale before the accident and now it will be costing you £xxx more to complete the deal as proven by the two values supplied by the dealer.
  6. Our house insurance company asked this time how many open fires and how many stoves.
  7. The last quarter suggests we are out of recession due to the extra spending caused by the olympics. Does this mean that come January we will be in an all new recession as there is no more olympics?
  8. 45p per hour multiplied by 7 hour day = bacon and sausage butty in my belly every morning from the local butchers!! 45p per hour soon comes to £60 per month Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves
  9. 1997 Stihl 044 with 20" bar. I got it in 2009 after swapping it for a MS230 with a customer who was scared of the big saw he had had from new.
  10. Based on working how many days per year? How many teams? How many other wages is this paying? e.g. office staff, company owner who never goes on the tools According to that you need to be doing £450-£500 (inc VAT) per day, every day to turn a profit and have a slush fund to cover lost work days etc. Up here that wouldn't be viable so have to have lower operating costs.
  11. work to live, don't live to work. I know this type of work is more of a calling than a choice but surely you are working to have the good things in life, including time off. If you were employed you would get a minimum of 4 weeks off per year and your employer should plan the work and earnings around this. As self employed you should be running a business not just working hand to mouth and not being able to afford time off. I fully understand the make hay while the sun shines principle and in some aspects of farming this is essential and unavoidable however in most cases the tree/hedge can wait a week. If you are so busy you can't find time for a week or 2 off then why not employ someone to reduce the load? I would much rather have some time off with the kids in the summer sun and risk working an extra week in the peeing down rain then have it the other way around.
  12. beer and sex and chips and gravy is all a macc lad wants
  13. The MET office couldnt tell you what the weather was yesterday never mind tomorrow!!
  14. You have to use the prussic for the CS38 assessment
  15. Had my older version for a bit over a year, it's been through the washing machine half a dozen times at least with standard washing stuff (non of the re waterproofing potions) and is still completely water proof. Absolutely outstanding jacket.
  16. I found that playing with IT too much is bad for your eyes

  19. It's not about tax, it's stamp and NI. As a self employed person you pay an awful lot less percentage wise than someone who is employed hence my thoughts that you are entitled to less. As has been said you work hard, pay into the system so expect f all.
  20. Well every day is a school day. Was there a minimum time you had to be off before you could claim? Was it you couldn't do your current job vs. not being able to work at all? (I know you were not good at all, no need for specifics).
  21. What benefit would you expect to get? I pay for sickness cover which will pay me a wage if I am unable to work for more than 14 days. I wouldn't expect a benefit from the government
  22. stihl saw with an oregon powersharp? The aldi saws are presentable. Father in law had one for firewood which lasted a couple of years but saw no hard work at all. Once bits started to need replacing it was bin fodder as you couldn't get parts anywhere. Being Aldi it does come with a 3 year warranty though so any major problems just take it back
  23. I generally send an email with photos and get a reply within the day. I was told by the TO that I didn't have to wait for the reply but must be 100% confident that he would allow it through the 5 day exemption.
  24. I have just fitted yet another filter housing/top handle section due to the rear AV mounting snapping off. Only about £12 for the part but a pain in the backside to fit as it's carb out and all throttle rods etc from the handle.
  25. Like alot of others have said I have my own small grinder. It will never make me a living but it can be thrown on the back of the van and make me an extra £50 on a job for a few minutes work and seems to offer the edge when quoting as an added extra. Where we tend to work there are a lot of narrow access gardens and and terraced gardens so the small grinder gets where a bigger ir even tracked machine wouldn't. There is a company 50 or so miles from me that does stumps and is a lot better than our local stump busters. He does an awful lot of miles generally chasing the jobs the tree surgeon doesn't want or can't do. A living is possible and the work not difficult with the right machines but be prepared to put the miles in and you need a good reputation for the number of jobs/referals you will need.
