  3. There is a big difference between using subbies to do a job for you and getting subbies in to assist with the job. It all boils down to the person making the decisions during the job. I had this discussion with NFU and got in writing 1. If I am on site and using subbies to assist (even if I sit in the van doing nowt I am still there) then the liability is mine entirely. I am employing the subbie and any insurance liability is on my policy. 2. If I get a job but sub that entire job or part of that job out then the liability is with the contractor. For example if you took on a full landscaping job for say £10k to include clear and replant you could sub the clear out to Joe Bloggs trees for say £3k, hand the site to them, site gets cleared and handed back any insurance issues while the site is getting cleared are your sub contractors. You have contracted out the work to a third party and they make the decisions on how the work is done, you have no input other than the spec that they quoted against. The original client may sue you but provided you can prove to your insurance co that you subbed it out then they will pass the claim to your subbies insurers. I have insurance for direct employees (i.e. on the pay role), use of subbies (day by day invoiced e.g. a climber) and use of bona fide subbies (handing the job to A.N. Other company who have their own insurance)

  6. OK then if we are being pedantic, buy one that has a chassis plate stating 3500kg GVW. It might only be the springs and brakes (+ axle, other bits) that are different but changing them does not make it legally allowed to run at 3500kg without a trip to VOSA for reclassifying. Tommer, you might have done your own tipper conversiob for £500 but does that come with engineers report? When I had mine a couple of insurers were insisting on an engineers report to prove fit for purpose. You also obviously don't count your time in that £500. £1500-£2k is a drive in drive out tipper conversion by a professional company that would fully satisfy the police and insurance companies in case of an accident.
  7. Is it a 3050 or 3500kg chassis? The former is worth much less if you want to stay legal. As has been said a new tipper conversion is £2k ish so look at hi cap 110's and possibly have it converted yourself. The early TD5's suffer from oil in the wiring loom which can destroy the ECU. If you go look take the drivers seat up and take the red wiring plug off the ECU, any oil and it could be expensive. You would be buying this one at it's absolute best (new body, new tyres, etc) so it is going to lose money but be hassle free. You could try and find a more used one that won't drop as much but might need a bit spending on it. Swings and roundabouts

  10. in the region of 800-1200kg for a 130 tipper depending on what the tipper body is made from, how many people you are carrying and how much kit. My old 130 was 2100kg empty (no tools, no people, full tank of fuel, no spare wheel). That had aluminium body on steel tipper chassis. Kev
  11. It's not waste if you are selling it, it is a product. Emitting dark smoke (smokeless zones) mean you should not be burning any wood not just tanalised.

  16. Small business account, had it 5 years now and never paid a penny. I can pay 20 cheques a month in or out without charge
  17. No, I'm playing devils advocate. The original statement was there is no law so you can do as you please. I am just stating you can't and could get caught out. I was told by HSBC I needed a business account as the cheques were being paid to a business, all be it a sole trader. It doesn't cost me anything so I see no problem with it.
  18. There may not be a law as such but if you are knowingly breaching there terms and conditions you could be seen as using the personal account fraudulantly to avoid fees which they are entitled to charge you and hence they could charge you and back date these fees
  19. I run a business account and personal account with HSBC. Two main reasons, the first being it makes accounting easier and the second being people make cheques out to stephenson tree services and HSBC will not allow them into a personal account. I assume all the people running just a personal account have cheques paid to themselves personally as apposed to the company? The HSBC small business account has no monthly fee however they do charge for cash transactions and £1 per cheque if you pay in more than 20 cheques a month
  20. Ash, sycamore and copious quantities of kiln dried softwood off cuts from a packaging place. Can have as many tipping skips full as I want for the price of a bottle of whiskey. Burns hellish quick but gets the pipes banging nicely
  21. used to have a 30" bar for the 460. It will pull it but not easily especially in 30" hard timber.
  22. I do a bit for a fencing contractorevery now and again. He passes all the bigger work over but will rip out and stack conifers ready for chipping. Normally only an hour or 2 at the end of a day but it's a bonus. He knows it must be clean, others have stacked all sorts of rubbish up expecting it to be chipped.
  23. Pedroski, read what Mr Blair has written and follow the advise. You could go back through the archives of Arbtalk and read about the stages Stevies's business has gone through and the fact that at one point he decided to rationalise his customer list and bin all the bad/slow payers and you could tell the stress levels dropped massively.
  24. 12 months MOT, fresh service, 4x4, assuming the tyres are good - should be worth a grand to anyone when taxed so your price seems OK
