  1. I once nearly pulled Pete away from a bag of free award winning pies. Everything has it's limits!!
  2. It depends on who is giving the instructions on site. If you sub out an entire job to another team and you personally are not on site then they provide the insurance and make their own decisions (eg you and your team go to 123 Baker Street and take down the ash in the front garden, there's £500 ring me when it's done). However, If for example you bring a self employed climber/Groundie onto a job you are running then you do need employers insurance. What if you as the employer injure the self employed climber/Groundie, they will want to claim from somewhere and there personal insurance won't pay out for someone else's mistake.
  3. Landy is used for mixed personal/business use. Mileage logs done a couple of years ago showed 75% of the miles were business related hence the % claim.
  4. Yes, mileage and litres at every fill up, takes a couple of seconds at the time and print it out at accounts time. I claim 100% of the chip truck and 75% of the landy so I need to know what diesel/service stuff/tyres went where. The app does it for me and keeps the accountant happy
  5. Yep, Roadtrip app on the iphone logs all expenses for the various vehicles making it easier at accounts time to know what I can claim for. It means I know what diesel went in the landy, transit, other vehicles.
  6. 2005 110 XS running BFG muds, roof rack with spots and usually a couple hundred kg of stuff in it does 22-25mpg (logged each tank over the last 20,000 miles). Mine has been tweaked for more power so drinks more than a standard one and is more economical around town than on the motorway as 75mph in 5th is full turbo so pouring the diesel in. I did a 250 mile trip about 6 months ago at 60-65mph following the wagons and got 26.5 mpg but was bored stupid.
  7. I had a good few hours up there over lunch time. Not a Stihl saw in sight but plenty of big forestry kit. A lot to see and do and free trees a plenty. I didn't fair quite as well on the axe throwing though.
  8. The arisings should be offered to the owner, not dumped on their property. Could you really see yourself going to trim your customers side of a boundary conifer hedge belonging to the neighbour and just pouring the clippings over to the owners side since it's their hedge?
  9. Corporate policy says type c so your legs can't breathe but I assume there is nothing written about the beard!! Have a shave and let your face breathe.:001_tt2:, you will be much cooler
  10. It certainly would if it had a tow ball on however I find the blue of the gaylander clashes with the green and black of the quadchip so I will stick to towing with the colour coded transit for now
  11. My other half has had a 2004 freelander td4 auto 5dr for the last 18 months/20,000 miles without an issue. It's not the fastest thing in the world but was decent enough in the snow and handles the bridle way we live down without a problem. I've just listed it tonight on ebay due to the arrival of a company car but I would have no second thoughts about getting in it tomorrow and driving 500 miles. It's never going to tow the biggest trailer but would have no problem with a timberwolf 150 chipper.
  12. Exactly, I borrow their money they charge me 10% for the privilege, they use mine and they don't pay me for the privilege. I ask for it back and they want to keep a bit.
  13. You do if you get cheques paid to a company name (e.g Stephenson Tree Services) as the bank (HSBC at least) will not allow these to be paid into a personal account.
  14. I have been with HSBC for the past 8 years with the business account and for 20+ years with personal accounts. Up to today the basic business account has been free to use with the exception of cash in/out. Yesterday I had a letter from them stating that from September they are charging £5.50/month as a management fee, 90p everytime you use the branch counter, 40p per cheque in, £1 per cheque out, x% for cash in/out and zero interest. Probably equates to £100 ish per year. Are there any better deals out there. My account is always in credit and sees £50k+ going through it in a year. TIA
  15. Hodge, finally got it sorted and liked Kev
  16. It says sorry this profile is currently unavailable. I'll keep trying
  17. post a link and I will like it, can't find it by searching PMH tree surgeons
  18. I nearly took an apprentice on in September but his careers advisor told him to go do an NVQ in land management so he had something to fall back on when he no longer wanted to do trees. Another tick in the box for further education for the school vs getting a job.
  19. Yes they can walk away but if you word a contract properly so that you are effectively loaning them the money for the training and they are paying it back in time worked if they do not do the time they have to pay the money back on leaving. Physically getting it could be a different matter but you are legally covered and it would stand up in small claims court. If you went to the bank to borrow for the training and then decided to change career you would still have to pay the bank back.
  20. If Pete can get the oak to me I can get it to Cirencester on Friday morning
  21. I have just taken a new lad on who has come off the dole. I used him for a few trial days and then gave him a letter stating that if he obtained his CS30/31 and driving license I would employ him. He took this to the job centre who said he had to get his DL and then they would pay for his 30/31. This took a couple of months from start to finish but saved me personally the cost of the 30/31 and he was happy to do odd days voluntary work whilst still claiming the dole. The job centre were also happy with him doing voluntary and openly stated that he could not sign off the dole until he had finished his 30/31 as once out of the system the funding would disappear. I will be paying for his 38/39 later this year and he will sign to state if he leaves during the following 6 months there will be an amount of the training to pay back on a falling scale. I will pay him his daily rate during this training but I didn't during his 30/31.
  22. For the cost which down here is £35 I would have it done at least yearly
