I had two wheel clamps a head lock and anchored chain on the floor on the chipper ,two lockable bollards in front of that, my tractor with three point linkage winch lowered and and the battery taken out in front of that. One large armoured door in front of that. All the saws and rigging kit in double locked armoured boxes.. a second locked gate people sleeping within 20yards and cctv... the only thing missing was an alarm system ...They came in with catapults to take out the cameras then oxy torched the locks for every thing else ,came to 27k .. they also some how knew I had a number of saws not in that lock up so started marking my house , at this point after already loosing a grand total of over £30k of hand tools and four wood chippers probably coming in around to another 55k over the years I packed up and left as to be honest and I’m not trying to be hard I would of killed some one and I knew who had done it so did the police. It was not mentally healthy being in that area and despite spending most of my life there and having a lot of friends I will never go back, as I would actually do terrible things with out a second thought and these sub human bits of shit are not worth doing time for. We need new laws in this country , I feel for any trades man who has built there livelihood up from nothing but hard graft the effects mentally of loosing your livelihood are well ...not positive but don’t let the bastards get you down get an alarm or change yards or even have a separate place for saws at home and don’t tell any one where it is.. it mad spending an extra half hour a day protecting gear but that’s what it’s come too.

Felling two mature oak trees near house
MattyF replied to ashley horner's question in Homeowners Tree Advice Forum
Your right Gary I would go with Cellweb over what I posted the link too... this should of been what I posted ! Cellweb®TRP - Cellular Confinement System WWW.GEOSYN.CO.UK Cellweb®TRP is the only guaranteed, no dig, cellular confinement system specifically designed and sold for tree root protection (TRP) applications. -

I would be looking at this if putting gravel down , you won’t have to mess with soil levels or damage tree roots with ground preparation and it would alleviate some of the roots compaction in the future Gravel Driveways | Plastic grids for gravel drives & car parking WWW.MATSGRIDS.CO.UK For gravel driveways, these plastic grids are perfect at retaining gravel and reinforcing the ground. Reduce sinking, rutting and migration on gravel driveways -

There is a lot of crap comparison vids on the net but this is Probably the best saw video I’ve seen and shows what a ported saw is all about , as all the saws are using the same bar and chain.. so we have the big 4 that are your standard best of the market 70cc saws , the 462 pisses it surprisingly even over the 500i then he brings out the ported saws , 461 destroys every thing and then the 390 wipes the floor!

Tried to pick up a large ash log on top of a bank the other week, crane would not quite do it so trying to stand it up and take pins out to drag it on the bunk, got it on the bunk ...it rolled back out and about 400 m down a hill gathering momentum and destroying everything in its path , could see a large flock of sheep in the Feild below , luckily they had clocked it and where running for there lives. Some how it had only broke one fence post but we had a mile drive down to the valley to pick it up where decided it would be best to half it.

Aye unless you use an Alaskan though it’s a pita .. even for an Alaskan it’s a pita really! , no good for a conventional bandsaw mill or if you want more than slabs , makes loading awkward ,takes up more room storing in the yard and usually won’t fit on the mill with out bits sticking out in to the rails or machine guards, and makes turning the log and levelling awkward... for a nice character slab great though... can’t really see a lot of character in that log though myself.

If you gave it like that to me to mill the first thing I would do it cut them off, that’s just not how you present timber to a mill...

Picture which shows examples of poor site safety
MattyF replied to kevinjohnsonmbe's topic in Training & education
Gerry knew exactly what he was doing though ... some of the biggest messes I’ve seen have been done by people lacking any common sense , kind of folk though sadly who end up writing the rules like working off two ropes, enough certifications and degrees to sound clever but put them in charge on a work site and they are a menace. -
Which month do you start using your stove again?
MattyF replied to BowlandStoves's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
Use an essi stove all year to cook off and heat water, just fired up the big boiler out side to make sure it’s all good in check and the house was far too warm ! -
Aye genius convincing Paul Daniels that Karla the elephant had her trunk stuck up her arse after getting zoocosis.

A Common Sense approach to Training?
MattyF replied to The avantgardener's topic in Training & education
Personally I think any one entering the industry should be on a 6 months apprenticeship before doing any tickets and have saw use under supervision from a already trained operator within there sponser.. it would save some people a lot of money and they knock off expectations that this industry is all about flash gear and adventure as Instagram and social media badly shows and that it’s really about hard physical back breaking work... it would probably save a lot of employers from complete time wasters who are nothing but a danger to them selfs and others... On the subject of FISA how can they dictate any thing on training? All there nptc trainers have to be FISA approved this isn’t helpful in any way at all, just more jobs for the boys. -
Exactly mark these are the tools who are making up the accident statistics in our industry the cowboys.. if this goes through I can genuinely see more accident happening because of it.

The realities of hand cutting
MattyF replied to webby1289's topic in Forestry and Woodland management
Stay in the midlands it’s flat.... the living definition of hell is a steep slope with multiple large wind blow in every direction , bad access and rain .. we called one job hamburger hill ,crawling and slipping trying to climb it or sliding down... going home covered in mud , bent bars off big stumps ,holes in your hands from winch cables and enough mosy and horse fly bites to take the pain off from falling down every hole hidden by brambles and bracken and the bruises from slipping off wet tree stems as it was the only way to cover ground relatively quickly , it was utterly soul destroying. -

Background to the HSE decision on two rope working
MattyF replied to kevinjohnsonmbe's topic in Training & education
More jobs for the boys in training hey ? So I now have ropes to be a hazard when rigging ,two ropes I have to keep an eye on lads on the ground cutting or feeding through chippers , I can honestly say in 25 years of tree climbing I have never had an accident or seen an accident that would of been avoided by using two ropes ... are we supposed also to take a third rope in the tree to allow access for aerial rescue ? Maybe hse should look more realistically on why these accidents happen. -
I think you should of gone for it! Your clearly not happy with this country despite living in one of its nicest parts.

Aye but you can’t have it all and every thing right now , it can’t take a life time or generations to build it up get it right or find a balance and even if you do I don’t think it will ever be enough for some... I think your lucky to be in the position your in a beautiful part of the country.
