  1. Looks proper nice bill better condition than I thought, I would hate to cover those slabs ... Seriously made me rethink about what I need to do with my downstairs floor.
  2. If it’s decent fire wood processor size and nice and straight £60 a tonne or more... there will be a few tonne off two acres.
  3. Any pics ?
  4. Did have a play with a kong double ascender and left and right foot Pantins , system would of been smoother if both wrenches had the same tethers and hitch cord lengths.. and your still fucked if you have not managed to route both lines so they can run parallel or the slightest bit of epicormic.
  5. Spud should have an idea as he did mine..
  6. Good points but I would still take a minor reduction of those limbs in the left over thinning. I have seen the wind tunnel effect a few times I’ll try and get you pictures of the remaining trees.
  7. I’d would reduce / pull in the top left side a few metres and the bottom limb, pull in the right side a bit ...that part of the crown looks like it’s thinning a bit itself anyway. As a rule for myself I would sway away from thinning mature beech because if you have to reduce it in the future you have taken a lot of the better targets out for doing, I also believe thinning creates wind tunnels and can weaken other parts of the crown and I’m all for leaving crossing branches , nature’s way of bracing. only thinning tree you see naturally is a dying one. That would be my spec anyway...
  8. In a lot of cases maybe but rubbishing formative pruning of young trees to eliminate problems that will cost hundreds to fix in the future for pounds when they are younger and leaving them more stable ,stronger and without huge wounds blah blah blah ... could go on..... Out of all the pointless pruning I’ve done over the years I can honestly say the formative pruning of thousands of young street trees was probably the only real necessary pruning I’ve done and I am proud to look at these trees 20 years on with there good form for the future.
  9. Rabbits I would of thought , muntjac damage I’ve seen is usually higher up and and a lot more aggressive.
  10. Still have not used it.... until I price flapping around like joey deacon in a tree for hours in a tangle it won’t happen either... I might have two lines to get an anchor but as soon as any major work happens I’m writing it out on a risk assessment, too dangerous.
  11. Pretty common on Sugi bars, I’ve done 4-5 nose sprockets now. At least you can replace them... I would not buy any more bars though because of the sprocket brittleness issue though.
  12. Yep , I had kind of priced the job on the basis that side of Newcastle’s council green waste was a mile down the road as it’s free every where else I use or you get paid for it.. chip is worth money so I don’t get it , I’d rather bring it back here but it’s a two hour round trip and half the day gone.
  13. Was on weigh bridge the other day loaded with beech chip and it came to 2 tonne ... I was more shocked when they said it was £45 a tonne on what had been a free chip tip.
  14. 5.5
  15. I’ve kind of always gone between the two picking out the saws I liked but sadly stihl didn’t make a saw I liked since the 046 until the 462 then the 462 to me feels like a husky, I stopped using the 460’s previous though and switched to husky as I felt the anti vibes on stihl where in general massively inferior and giving me problems. If you never had a go on the 288xp I guess the 064 would of been in the same class , I did own one briefly (got stolen ) but it always struck me as an odd ball as it was almost the weight of the 066 but less power. Back to the 500i Out in the woods makes a good point about the lack of mid range it is certainly not a 462 in comparison which I can’t fault but what the 500i will do is pull a lot bigger bar without hesitation flat out in the cut and picks up very quick to max revs which I’m guessing is why it feels a bit weak in that part of the power band.
  16. Personally I think the 500i performs like a lighter 288xp ,I always would pick up the 395 first over the 288 but with the 500i I’m not sure.
  17. Prefer the epell hook,Dmm shank is not wide enough I felt and can not close the shank to stop snagging ... although the dmm does feel crafted and weighted beautifully it just didn’t tick the boxes when actually using it.
  18. I know a lad who’s been using his 500i since day one on outsider Sitka since its been out and he rates it, I’ve only used mine for Arb work at the moment but got it from his review as I know he hammers his saws , I do like the 462 though.

    Quad bikes.

Honda Trx 350 is the best in its class I think .... I would not touch a Polaris with a barge pole any way! my old house mate brought a brand new Polaris as an upgrade for his trx and had so much bother with it he got his money back. My trx starts first time every morning and I’ve abused it on some of the roughest terrain possible and it’s never let me down.
  20. There could be services as well looking at the foot path photo, rupturing a gas or sewage main with a swift stunt fell and crane load the timber on the trailer and in the pub for lunch finish is out the window... I think it’s trickier than it looks and being oak and one of the heaviest timbers to deal with pricing by a photo on a forum is a bit errrrr .... silly??
  21. On modern quarter sawing though you would have to either turn the log every cut or use a Lucas ? Looks like you would get better recovery from traditional as well.
  22. 3x6 4x2 and 4x4 is easy money as well as what you mentioned and are easier to sell, only time I’ve made money quick milling is getting a cutting list and getting duggy fir on the mill..not that I’ve tried to hard to use the mill for a profit!
  23. Can I ask where you heard or have any links to this info rough ?
  24. Most dealers I use will offer a new saw to try out for a week or two. They will usually have one that is the demo saw, usually game changing saws battery or like these newer larger stihls that seem to have amazing power to weight and usability.
  25. No Garry I don’t and I also feel not enough trees are protected.
