  1. I signed up for the HCC level 2 last year and I'm sure the website said they were looking to launch a level 3 distance learning this year. Maybe towards the end of the academic year?
  2. Stupid question probably - but with the little stihl bar and chain set up - what file does it need? is it a 3.2mm?
  3. I have the meindl airstream. Really nice on the ground or in a tree
  4. Have you done / tried any climbing in your current boots? I think all ground boots van be used to climb and most climbing boots can used on the ground. Whether they're all suitable is a different question - support, flexibility etc.
  5. There are stiles, kissing gates and funny gated bridges. Also, on map 14 at about 35 mile marker by the orchard there are steps up to a kissing gate, then a narrow path up to a kissing gate leading to a really steep hill with a stile at the top. The next one is a small pedestrian gate in a large field gate. I've not been past the M5 after the 58k marker as we normally turn left and walk alongside the M5 to get back on a loop. I'll try and get out to photograph some of the gates / stiles etc in those sections over the next few days if that's any use?
  6. Easter Compton so pretty much on part of the Green Man - walk the dog across a couple of miles of it.
  7. Happy to be involved in anyway if I can?
  8. Done and passed The climb and tree rescue was straight forward and I enjoyed it. Got complimented on very competent and efficient climb. The pole rescue was off a skinny, well used pole. Setting up 3 man rescue and then told his line was cut. It was a head-messer but got through and happy Same again on Monday, but this time with my shiny new tiny echo. Best put it together this weekend
  9. Isn't it just! Assessment day for climbing and rescue :-) Let's get it ON!
  10. The place I'm doing mine in had full kits for everyone that needed them, or even just bits. So you shouldn't need to buy anything if you don't want to.
  11. I've borrowed the kit list off the place I'm doing mine with this week and next: 38+39 Tree climbing harness Long rope 35m-45m Short rope 3m-5m Cambium saver approx 90cm-1.5m Cabium saver retrever ball 5 X karabiners (must be 3 way auto locking 22kn min) 3 X prussic loops 60cm-70cm ( mix of both is advised) Climbing helmet with (3 point chin strap ear and eye protection) Rescue connector (small sling approx 10cm) First aid kit (personal) Rescue knife with retractable blade Extras for 39 Top hadled chainsaw for training ( we can take delivery before for your course) Saw strop Tools appropriate for your saw Chainsaw trousers must be type C, class 1 min chainsaw boots (not wellys) Chainsaw gloves (optional) Hand saw (Silkey type)
  12. Spiking and pole rescue today. Awesome stuff. It pissed it at least half of the day and I still came out smiling. Kits in airing cupboard drying out. Tomorrow is climber rescue, practice for assessment and playing about with shiny stuff. Living the dream.
  13. Blimey - Wednesday morning and its not even half way through 38! I ache in places I never knew could ache and I have a pressure point on my right thigh - I guess its from my harness Loving it though - about 75' up a beech yesterday. I find it a bit weird at the mo, I'm really happy on my main line, but feel less confident on changeovers when just hooked onto my short line. I suspect full confidence comes in time?
  14. Treekit's course is very good. Depends where you are- there seem to be more arb specific first aid courses appearing round the country
  15. Down in Dorset for my 38 with Roland Heming. Looking forward to it! 39 next week I have a boot full of new kit, I'm fully expecting to be seen as 'All the gear, no idea'.
  16. Does that not just classify as 'forestry purposes' though and thereby keep within the tie?
  17. They are a good crew down there. I did my 30/31 last year. Really looking forward to my 38/39 over the next 2 weeks. I'm sure I'll be back for pruning and rigging am maybe large fell later in the year.
  18. I'm very very tempted.
  19. Anyone reckon there'll be any good deals at the arb show in a couple of weeks or get one now at £140(zigzag)?
  20. Never tried either but the zigzag does look good and seems really smooth fiddling with it on a shop setup. I'm tempted with a zigzag
  21. I was suggested to get 11.5-11.7mm rope. I guess the actual rope may depend on what you plan to climb on in the future, hitch or mechanical. Drt or srt I bought tachyon 11.7mm I think friction cord should be 2mm thinner than the rope it's on
  22. I guess that depends on your current level of knowledge. I think you pay a fair amount towards the college / provider for their time, the assessment and verification and course materials. If you don't want the paper qualification I'd spend the £500 on a load of decent text books and maybe some interesting workshops. I'm doing it because I haven't done plant biology for over 20 years and I'm trying to get a decent basic understanding. Plus I went the HCC route which is instalments so it 'feels' less like I've paid £500
  23. I got a roughneck log holder from screwfix for £70 seems to do the job fine and holds some decent sized wood.
  24. From what I've been reading up on you could do with knowing Bowline, blakes hitch and figure 8 - which makes up a three knot climbing system Fisherman's / double fishermans anchor knot alpine butterfly clove hitch prussik and maybe some other friction hitches. have a look at the knot guide above, climbingarborist.com also has a selection of knots etc
