  1. I'm looking for recommendations for a first pickup. Got about £4k to spend, so I'm thinking L200, Hilux or Ranger. What stuff do I need to be looking for, are any more recommended than others? Auto-trader, eBay or Gumtree? Would like double cab for internal storage space and somewhere for the dog to sit.
  2. It should be that level 3 is more in depth than level 2. Level 2 equates to GCSE level, level 3 is more 'A' level
  3. Another choice could be you pay for the course, they pay for the assessment at later date. You get trained staff which covers a lot of PUWER type H&S stuff, but they don't become more employable because they don't have the CSxx cert or whatever I paid for my own 30/31 and didn't even know for sure arb was what I wanted to do. I'm saving for 38 and maybe 39 to make myself more emploayble, but if someone offered me a job as a groundie and then offered me training then I'd expect them to pay
  4. That would be properly awesome. I'd be very grateful of the offer to borrow, even more so of a chance to learn the ropes
  5. White noise: they are both excellent offers, I have messaged at least one of them. The offer of a loan is awesome and I'll be talking to them soon, but I'm always concerned of damaging something that's not mine Peatff: I fear I may have written the title wrong, I'm more than happy to buy stuff off people, I meant for sale or surplus when I said 'get rid of'. You can be sure I would be paying more than just postage for anything offered. I was thinking that those who use climbing kit will have stuff that is no use for every day work due to age or natural replacement. I'm sure there's kit out there that never gets used anymore or will he used again. I'm happy to buy it from people who are willing to sell
  6. Alternatively recommendations for cheap starter kit?
  7. I'm looking to get some kit together - I'd like to start climbing, recreationally at first and look to get skilled up for CS38 in the future. I was wondering if anyone has any old kit they don't use any more that is still in good enough condition for a novice to start getting to grips with the basics?
  8. NO, I don't think its fair - you'll get more 'use' out of them after the courses, so they will earn more money for you and you will recoup the costs eventually. I would be looking at them signing some sort of bond that they must pay back the training if they leave within a certain amount of time, after all you're also making them more employable with others.
  9. I've been watching bits of this being put together and it really does look like it will be pretty cool. Nice to see its included in the admission, another reason to become a friend of Westonbirt.
  10. Bump We're nearly all out of seasoned stuff. Is there anything out three at a reasonable price? Only alternative is a load of freshly felled and split ash. Is it really ok to burn green?
  11. This so needs a like button
  12. I'm currently at a coaching assessment day, once I've finished this I'm going to set aside an evening a week to get cracking on my level 2. Really looking forward to it!
  13. Did you ask them for a permanent job or just days to start? Maybe see if you can get off days as a groundie to start?
  14. That's what I'd be looking to do. Is there a link to the review? I'll try searching...
  15. I've been looking at forest master and Handy splitters.
  16. All the openings and opportunities I've looked at want tickets - 30/31 as a minimum. Most want 38 too to take you on as a groundie even. I would have thought it would be difficult to get brash dragging experience without 30/31. Chipper you can be deemed competent by the employer but to be of much use you need to be able to use a saw?
  17. If you want tickets after 30/31 then I'd do 38, first aid and chipper. I'd get work as a grounder first to build experience, 38 and first aid will help get grounded work. 39 can come later when you have time served. I'd also want to do groundwork to ensure its the job I want to do. If you impress who ever you work for they may put you through 39 later? Have you thought about an arb qualification? I'm studying for a level 2 certificate as distance learning.
  18. Two temping jobs that I remember. The first was cold calling for clearing moss from rooves. One old lady answered who had just buried her husband. I didn't go back after lunch on the first day. Second was packing UPVC doors with frames and all furniture. It was pointed out to me that the UPVC wasn't allowed to touch the floor but there were no sack trucks or anything. I didn't realise how much a UPVC door and its frame weighed until then. I managed 1 day but couldn't walk the next day.
  19. Are there any recommendations out there? I'm thinking about getting a little splitter just to fill the woodshed whenever I get stuff in, maybe a few times a year. I'd have about £250 to spend... Or should I just get a better axe / maul?
  20. My first module pack arrived this week. I've not had time to open the cover yet
  21. Not sure if this has been mentioned. On other forums I use there is a reputation system. Similar to liking something, if you find you receive a useful response you can give 'rep' points to the poster. They then build a 'rep' score which is generally displayed under their forum name to the left of each post. This means, when you're given conflicting advice you could choose to take the advice from the person with the highest 'rep' count. Currently all you have to go by is post count, and an enormous post count doesn't always relate to sound technical knowledge. I think that might be useful?
  22. I've got nowhere to stack it other than the woodshed. I'll try and leave gaps between stacks to aid airflow.
  23. It is a bit late, but I'm going to put some guttering on the front to stop drips running down your neck. It's heigh enough at the front, 1.7m so hardly stooping. I decided on bitumen corrugated roofing in the end, so first piece is up, rest goes on first thing tomorrow. I then need to fill it. I've got loads of ash from a local coppice. its in 5-6 foot lengths, my wood burner takes maximum of 13". Should I cut it to 13", 26" or 36"? Should I then leave it round or split it? I also have a little bit of cherry in shorter lengths
  24. I would never expect to get anything like the same money when moving jobs - however I'd also like to think that age and 'life experience' is worth something? This thread seems to suggest it's not a particularly well paid profession
