  1. Camping booked. I've opted for both nights, just in case. I'll be looking for shiny kit, meeting arb talkers, learning new things and looking for work. Plus the cider. I can't make it until late afternoon on the Friday
  2. I have a pass out for the weekend. My wife has two PhD essays due the following week so she'd quite like me out of the house. I may even have some spends to look at nice new kit by then too :-) Does anyone know if you can book just camping - the online system says its camping and event entry - I already get free entry as a friend of westonbirt. Looking forward to meeting to some arbtalkers and sharing a few cizzzers
  3. Just got back from the Treekit arb first aid course. A really enjoyable day - learnt quite a lot, had a surprise test at the end and a chance to look round all the shiny stuff in the shop. Day was made all the better with a chippy lunch :-) I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't done a first aid course, or as a back up to one that was more mainstream and not arb focussed.
  4. I would have thought they would do it on your behalf. From Gov.UK
  5. Does anyone have any use for a part qualified arborist with some tickets and a will to learn. Available full time from 1st October 2016. Will come saws and climbing kit. In fact - would anyone take on an older apprentice? I could do 1 maybe 2 years of shocking money in return for a good grounding and lots of experience
  6. I'll also be sending a CV to all the local and some of the national firms, followed up by a phone call. I suspect trying to get a year or two full time with a larger company - maybe utility work would be good for experience and then look to work with smaller firms on a subby basis, once I have more tickets and experience. At least I have 38/39 to look forward to this month along with the Tree-kit arb first aid course. Hoping to hear one way or the other tomorrow when I get back from my day as a groundy
  7. Thanks Felix If I do get redundancy pay out then I will definitely be careful. I'll looking for a cheap truck (we want one for general usage anyway) maybe a little bit more kit but it will mostly be there to cover my mortgage payments for at least 12 months while I transfer across. That and maybe a few bits around the house. Once I know where I stand with current work I'll be taking pretty much whatever anyone offers.
  8. I'd like to think I've got a reasonable level of fitness. Getting 'tree fit' will take time. I should find out more tomorrow night, but I've taken a day's leave to go get some more experience. Got a pretty full climbing kit sorted and a couple of saws so roll on the next few months.
  9. The decision was put off until today. I have no job to match across to. So whatever happens I'm coming over to arb. Now I waiting to hear on the redundancy package. If I get it then I can get some nice kit, and I'll be ready tot start on 1st October 2016. If I don't get it the package then I'll,be resigning and looking to start in arb by the end of May
  10. Pork pies are awesome. I did my first 100 mile cycle ride fuelled pretty much by pork pies.
  11. As soon as you scroll down the menu option disappears, and as there's nothing suggesting you shouldn't scroll down on the first page!
  12. They seem, to have a list of covered courses https://businesswales.gov.wales/farmingconnect/sites/farming/files/documents_and_files/Dogfennau2016/approved_course_list_-_year_1.pdf Doesn't have 38/39 Fair play if you can get funding for it though - it's a PITA when you have to self fund the majority of it. I know Wales has a number of different funding sources available from the Welsh assembly and so on, it's a nightmare as I can never use Welsh apprentices to meet my expected targets
  13. Yes -p I'm sure it has, there's a picture of a mobility scooter on the bottom of the sign and I can't think of anything you wouldn't have been able to access - other than the crows nest and one little side bit over a rope bridge. They'd never get away with building anything like that now without it being DDA compliant. I must go back over there without the dog one day to see it all and have a roam round the old arboretum
  14. It opened to the public today SO i popped over for a look. It's really impressive, gives a very different perspective to that part of the arboretum. I really enjoyed it, would have liked to have a look at the interactive bits and gone up the steps to the crows nest bit but the dog really wasn't very keen. She could see the floor between all the broads. She made it all the way across it though, unlike someone's spaniel who lay down and looked like they were clinging on for dear life!
  15. It only covers 30/31 I think. Not 38/39
  16. Thanks - I took it nice and slow and I'm now waiting for my new box of stuff to arrive today
  17. I read that veg oil is ok - should be a particular type (Canola/rapeseed). In some supermarkets the singletype oil is relatively expensive but their 'vegatable' oil is only has rapeseed as the listed oil on the ingredients and is loads cheaper. I think the last lot I bought was Lidl's finest. I then mix it 50/50 with oregon bio oil.
  18. Can't beat a work ethic like his!
  19. That's the one!
  20. Still looking for climbing kit etc. Due to be looking for proper work soon, might look self employed subby too. Have you got any spare kit under the stairs?
  21. So tomorrow is the big decider. Redundancy on 30th September would mean I could look for someone willing to give me an 'apprentice' position. No redundancy means I have to sell myself and graft like Billy-oh to show what I'm worth (which I would have done anyway down the apprentice route). Either way I need saws and climbing kit for whatever is round the corner. Suggestions please
  22. Is there a set up that can be used for both drt and srt? I really like the look of lots of the srt stuff talked about on here and that I've seen on YouTube, but I'm guessing the course for 38/39 will want to use all drt? If I'm buying my own kit but want to future proof it, what's best?
  23. Not sure if it's me, my pc, chrome or the interwebnets but my car keeps clearing itself and I have to start building it up again. Almost making me not want to buy stuff
  24. Waiting to hear back from Hi-Line. They were very interested, especially with my background in training but at the time were looking for climbers. I said I'd do my own 38/39 and they said they might be able to find me something after I'd passed, so it's still a possibility.
  25. I may have been a bit ott there. There doesn't seem to be much demand for an over 40 inexperienced and, when I started looking un-ticketed, newbie. I shall be starting my looking again in earnest over the next couple of weeks.
