  1. I found this book very helpful. Understanding tax for small businesses, by sarah deeks. Cost 12quid.
  2. I tried to deal with network rail over a tree over the tracks they never replied to emails or phone messages. Gave up in the end. The client and I felt we had tried our best to deal with the tree and NR would be liable. I avoid those jobs now, total pita, possible fines for delaying trains are astronomical. Think carefully about it and charge accordingly!
  3. Just renewed 3.5t transit, £275, just me as driver, basically same as you mark but I am much younger (still in my 40s for another 6 months anyway)!
  4. Nfu do small holder insurance policies. I don't know if that would be suitable. Otherwise you could set up as a sole trader and get commercial insurance based on very low turnover and no employers liability should be less than £500.
  5. Sorry no idea, have you tried ringing a couple of the insurers, or nfu insurance?
  6. My mate had a black ar50, looked great. Especially in my fs1e rear mirror as I left him for dead!
  7. Tree has died. Not sure what would have caused it. Any mushrooms /fungi appeared near it?
  8. That's a crap wage for the required quals and experience. Can't see many quality candidates going for that.
  9. Hi, Adam riedi is based in Fife, and does picus for me. Look up his company blebo tree surgery. Cheers, Jan.
  10. That must have cost hundreds in plugs. Obvs not normal vandals, who stands to gain from it?
  11. Hi Mick, What's a cripple cut? I presume it is a partial cut that would leave it standing until the bigger one is brought down on top. cheers, jan.
  12. I use base ties sometimes but prefer to advance my tip as I ascend the tree. That way I can put it as high as needed. I don't do a lot of srt though and haven't established an absolute favourite system. Dismantling Connies doesn't require srt!
  13. OK, rescue line is recommended. I have learnt something new, thanks arbtalk! Makes sense in big trees.
  14. Who says? Steven says an instructor told him, can you show me where is it stated as best practice?
  15. Interesting. Never heard of this from anyone else. I don't think it is in the AA best climbing practice booklet. I did my rigging ticket in Feb and no mention anywhere of having a rescue line installed. I think this is something very few people do or think they should, and it is not even recommended let alone best practice.
  16. Can I ask where it says we should have a rescue line pre installed? I have never heard of this. I would be interested to know where that comes from. Cheers Jan.
  17. Another option is to buy a 7m cable. I never need to winch something 30m. I have a 7m winch cable and a rope, which is much lighter and manageable than 30m of wire. Cost about 80 quid for the shorter cable. Jan.
  18. Pics would help. I would suggest getting a tree survey by someone familiar with bs5387 (British standard for trees and built environment). Even if the survey says it is not tree related at least you will have the tree assessed for safety too. Single tree survey cost approx £400 max. Hopefully less. Jan.
  19. Your solicitor should be able to advise what status the land is. If it is in the deeds to your house then should be fine. If you need a hand or advice after the sale I know guys in Angus, or I can pop up from North Fife. Jan
  20. You can ring the FC for advice, but if it is not a garden you will need a licence and a replanting programme. It can open a can of worms! Is this in Angus?
  21. Hi Andy, The rules have just changed so I would suggest reading the Scottish forestry website, used to be forestry commission. Just had a name change. I was with some forestry guys last week who said some loopholes had been closed. However I would think the gardens exemption still applies. Here is a link to the new document. https://forestry.gov.scot/support-regulations/felling-permissions
  22. I haven't noticed any significant loss of beech trees here in Fife. That one that lifted the root plate maay well have suffered from compaction of roots under the track. I couldn't see any significant roots coming off the root plate on that side. It is hard to tell with pics though. As Gary said mulching may help.
  23. Prunus cerasifera atropurpurea also known as 'Pissardii'.
  24. It's been a while since I used a big chipper but my 160 is great. It is light, 2 of us can get it into all sort of places. Never needed a tracked chipper since getting it, but I just do domestic stuff. Jan.
