  1. The £250 plus the logs crew are jokers, if folk choose that option they better feel lucky and keep their fingers ?. I will probably leave it but make them sweat a bit waiting to see if I report it. Shame the TO is off, cause I could of just had a word bout it.
  2. CA was discussed at time of quote and directly referred to in emailed quotes. Absolutely knew about it. Other tree surgeon quoted before me but didn't mention CA, so homeowner was surprised when I raised it. I think they think I was trying to find a way to quote higher.
  3. Price was £650 (no vat) , for 40ft birch dismantle, massive monkey puzzle 60ft crown lift/deadwood removal, shrubs trimmed and other small saplings removed including roots. Including CA application.
  4. Here's there set up. The reg plates on the chipper and trailer are the same. Looks like they tow them both at same time. Sure read a thread that was a no no too!
  5. Unfortunately the TO is off long term sick otherwise I could of chatted to her about it. Why bother doing applications if you can just crack on regardless?
  6. Down the road from me a birch is being dismantled (I quoted for it but was too expensive apparently), no tree work application submitted (home owner was told CA needs application at time of quoting). Anyway another company is currently doing it, I spoke to them saying this has no permission. He responded by saying it has a Co dom stem so can have a retrospective done on it after removal. I am annoyed at his blatant ignoring of CA rules, debating passing on photos to the council. Opinions please!
  7. I have managed without any of these extra gadgets, then end up in a tree thinking a hook of some kind would be useful. Had considered the Captain but seems pricey for what is is and how often I would use it. Interesting to read about the captains limitations. I seem to manage OK climbing on a HC and vt, not very techno but simple.
  8. Hi David, thanks for that. I hoped I was right. Are they harmful to trees, saw some on a sycamore with significant surrounding features/targets as well. Jan.
  9. Found these at the base of a birch. I am thinking Coprinus family but probably wrong.... Pretty sure they aren't in the Arborist Field Guide. Cheers Jan.
  10. Yep, I can easily see that happening. I remember it took some months for me to be good for climbing all day. You're getting old now Steve too (still a fair bit younger than me though). Enjoy tomorrow! Jan.
  11. Photo didn't attach first time.
  12. I am gonna try the stick trick, here's my attempt at one, made of Holly.
  13. I did try and comply with NR requirements but they never bothered replying. I have plenty of work and can do without the hassle involved. It's unbelievable how NR don't reply to calls and emails, the tree I looked at is dodgy and I highlighted that in my email. My ass is covered! If anything happens it will be NR having to explain why they didn't respond.
  14. Yep, unless it is going to pay really well and zero chance of F ups then I walk away from these jobs.
  15. I have tried to do a job overhanging rail lines. I have emailed and left messages with the office in Glasgow that deal with Scottish NR issues. They have never replied so I gave up. I didn't really want the job in the first place so am relieved not to have to jump through NR hoops, as it sounds a nightmare. Just bear in mind that if anything does go wrong NR have lots of lawyers to sue your ass and probably make you bankrupt! All the best, jan.
  16. Hi Tom, I wouldn't bother with theory stuff at your stage. A chainsaw ticket (30/31), as mentioned before makes you useful to an employer and is a skill you have the rest of your life. The theory you can do later on if you really commit to it. If you have 30/31 you should be able to get some trial days with someone in your area. All the best. Jan.
  17. As of next week the early starts are essential for me, it'll be getting dark by 5pm.
  18. I bought a bosch 40m laser measure (was about £70), it is OK up to 20m (if it's not too sunny), I wouldn't recommend it and will be looking for something better eventually.
  19. I got £80 a day climbing when I started out, about 4 yrs ago. After 4 months that went up to £100. Climbing every day with someone who knows more than you and can teach is worth a lot. If you can get in with a good team you will learn a lot that will see you right for years to come. Imo your first job is an investment in the rest of your career. Good luck with it. Jan.
  20. The arb association publish Fungi on Trees, an arborists field guide. Its about £15 quid and has great colour photos to help Id them.
  21. Mate at work, then reading up on it and doing it myself. No formal training.
  22. Cheers Gary, No Chris said it this year. I couldn't get a place last year, too many southerners attending! Thanks for the reply, I will look up David's post. All the best for next week, thanks for taking the time to reply. Jan.
  23. Eddie stobart buy chip for biomass. Had a chat with them last week about it.
  24. Hi Gary, Re mulching. Chris Simpson of ITS was quite anti mulch when I was at Hazard Tree Inspection, he basically said in Scotland you don't need to worry about water retention. I have been quite pro mulch. Can you recommend any good articles re benefits? Cheers Jan.
