  1. Hi Rich, Thanks, what diameter of wire? ebuy has 1 to 3mm available. jan.
  2. Hi Tommy, thanks for the help. TBH all of it!? I spliced my whoopies/loopies but this is first attempt with 16 strand. I bought Splicing Modern Ropes by Polman but it's not much help with Arb ropes, ie it doesn't cover 16 strand. I can't find a tutorial vid on doing it. There are a couple of vids of people doing it with a wand but not got one. I tried making a wire fid with bike brake cable (that's what I had around), but it is crap! Finding the right kind of wire is the issue (especially in lockdowned scotland). Think i might buy one (any recommendations). From your pics ,you have taken the cover back on itself to about 1 fid length down the cover (looks like you have tapered the end). I don't get why you daisy the core - or what you do with it next? I assume you taper it, and take it back up to overlap the tapered cover? Sorry if this is a bit of a newbie (splicing) post. Cheers, Jan.
  3. I have tried a couple of times to splice teufel hi vee, and failed. Tried using selma fids and a homemade wire fid. Any suggestions?
  4. Hi, I'll say my piece and David H or someone else better qualified will put me right! I think you can re plant with same species in the same space, without issue. There's a good talk by Lynne Boddy on the Arb Assoc website re trees and fungi, was on the virtual showground webpages, well worth a watch (less than 10mins long). From that I gathered a couple of things, one was that fungi are present in wood/trees already and become activated and pathogenic when the tree is stressed/over pruned etc. Well that's my understanding of it but I'm no expert! Jan.
  5. When did you last clean the air filter? My 560 was bogging down today, got it on the bench and the air fiter was choked.
  6. I'm a bit dyslexic and always found writing essays hard. I got taught to use mind maps which I found helped organise my thoughts on paper.
  7. Thanks mick, That was my gut feeling but I couldn't find anything to back it up. J.
  8. OK, I hadn't considered the fact people aren't buying at present, so it's value may be lower than previously. Dealer offered £4k part ex. I thought that was very low offer, but maybe not. I am in rush to sell. Still don't know what to ask for it. J.
  9. Hi Folks, I am thinking of selling my TW160 chipper and struggling to work out a re-sale value. I am thinking of buying a bigger chipper with bounce back loan. I can't find any for sale on the usual places ebuy, euctree or on any dealer websites. How do you come up with a sensible price for used equipment privately? I'd rather just sell at fixed price rather than auction site. Chipper is 3yrs old, dealer serviced and 450hrs. Paid £12.5K new. What do you do - take off 20-30% for first year then 10% thereafter? Looking forward to hearing your opinions! Cheers, Jan.
  10. We need to know what rope type and size you're using? Then I'm sure you'll get good advice.
  11. Done, hope you post the findings. J.
  12. Dan's post has got it right in my experience.
  13. Hi, I agree about not handing your address out to strangers on forums, however you can get parcels/post delivered to a post office of your choice for you to collect from there. It is called Post Restante (operates worldwide). I used it a lot when in Aussie/NZ. Might be worth looking into - to see if you'd be confortable doing that instead. All the best, Jan.
  14. Hebden must have one of the highest tin foil hat per capita ratios in the country!
  15. Agreed it looks like chicken of... but possibly unusually shaped phellinus pomaceus which is more common on plum.
  16. If you have 30/31, work hard and reliable £9-11 per hour is what I would pay you in Scotland. I try to train guys up, let them climb (using a silky saw)when possible, generally teach them stuff and make the job more interesting. This is self employed rate, you have to pay tax and ni from it, and no holiday pay. I have to say I wouldn't be looking to take more guys on a present, as demand for work is quite uncertain, in the medium term. J.
  17. Michelle, David's reply is from one of the most knowledgeable people on here, and probably in the country. You will be hard pressed to get better info/advice. J.
  18. As Dan said, likely mower damage. How is the tree generally, is it in leaf, all over, or at same stage as other sycamores in the area? I would monitor the tree, if concerned you could pass on any issues to the local tree officer, who could take it into account when the tree is surveyed. J.
  19. The only time I am attached on a straight spar is during a dismantle. Otherwise i am tied in higher up through a crotch, when doing reductions. On a spar doing a dismantle i just have my flip line and rope round it and chog it down in sections. I generally free fall more than i rig, as I am pretty good at doing a snap cut on a section, break it and throw it accurately into a drop zone. I used to rig more but more confident as years go by. J.
  20. I occasionally have people cancel, I don't have anything in t&cs about it. I don't have time to try taking people to small claims etc, that time could be better spent working for people who are happy to get you in. Just my take on it. I might grumble a bit at the time but usually so busy I don't have time to worry about it.
  21. Not quite sure what you mean. I generally use a cambium saver, have use a choked sling and carabiner also. There's usually a branch stub somewhere you can use. You could cut notches in the spar so it bites on something. I have never felt the need to buy anything specific. J.

    Scam?

Probably is a scam, however I live just near dundee and have time on my hands, so if genuine I could pop over have a look then feedback. I know nothing about forestry machines though! pm if you are interested. jan.
  23. One issue I came across with spiderjack 2 is it only has a 5yr lifespan. Petzyl metalwork is 10yr. I don't think the SJ will get a loler after 5years. Depends if that is important to you. J.
  24. Cheers saul, I was thinking of someone else though, think his name starts with M... D...! I actually just bought a mill (before all this covid nightmare), went for a panther 42". Milled up a decent oak and got 1/3 of my money back from that one job. Sure I'll find future uses for it, and get all my money back. J.
  25. Re Chinese mill, Someone on here often advises newbies 'buy cheap, buy twice". I cant remember who says it though? Jan.
