  1. I am in very similar position to the OP, but do have an accountant already and am planning my VAT reg. Quickbooks saves me loads of time, especially sending out invoices and checking I've been paid and tracking expenses. For just under £15 a month it is well worth it for me. Just my thoughts. j.
  2. Hi rich, like Steve says it's about income not salary. I'm over 50 now and have a good credit history. Not really looking for another mortgage or finance. Best set up is dependent on circumstances.
  3. Thats what my accountant recommended. I think you have to pay ni on anything higher.
  4. Depends on your business set up how long you've been trading etc. I'm now a limited company so can take a small salary £8k a year then take the remainder in dividend from the business profits. As a Ltd I cant help myself to money in the same way a sole trader can. If you are sole trader you can take as much as you like, but make sure you leave enough to pay you tax and NI and pre paid tax at the end of the year!
  5. That must be a nice change for her[emoji38] [emoji38] [emoji38] Sorry bout that you set yourself up for it.

    Tw160 lights

Hi, I had the same issue with tw230. I had to get an extra box added, to the chipper side, to match the transit output with the led lights. The timberwolf dealer did it, think it was about £80 fitted. I had to put on an extra light board until the new part arrived. The extra box fitted on the chassis, if you dealer is a bit away they could post it to you, fitting it is a 20min job. Jan.
  8. I assume you'll get felling to 380mm, rescue and chainsaw from rope and harness and maybe chipper etc in 4 wks. It should make you very employable so long as you realise you will have 'all the paper but no idea'. It takes at least a couple of years to get ok then at 5yrs you'll be a solid arb.
  9. I am a beginner miller too, but I use watered down pva glue on the ends, 2 or 3 coats. I think the quoted drying times are 1yr per inch plus a year. Although I made a picnic bench with fresh slabs this year and its not warped at all. Surprisingly. J.
  10. Wow, that statue really hits you emotionally. Much harder hitting than other ones I've seen. Where is that?
  11. To fell a tree by Jeff jepsom, great intro and still find useful stuff in it. Gerry beranek book is really good but quite old and maybe better for someone with experience looking to widen their skill set. J.
  12. I've only had my 230 a few months, no plans to go bigger.
  13. BTW I am talking about a 35hp pre-dpf 230, not sure what the new ones are like in comparison.
  14. I had a 160 and paid 13.5k almost 4yrs ago. I was very happy with it. Changed it for a 230 this year (was about 19k inc vat), it is a different league, chomps through stuff faster and breaks wide forks easy. You spend a lot more time chainsawing stuff with a 160. 230 is heavier but I now run a team of 4 so the extra bodies mean we can push it around easy enough. Hope that is useful. Jan.
  15. 30m Scots pine dismantle, right next to school playground, so we had to stop at playtime. Up and down the tree. Man I was knackered at the end of it!

    Stump grinder

I got mine ex hire from kipper hire. I paid £3.3k and it was money well spent. Buying older gear is always a bit of a lottery, unless you know someone or someone on here is selling something. Not sure if Trigger has ever done any stumps btw so bear that in mind. J.

Fsi b20 is very good, but don't know if you'll find one in your price range.
  18. Hi, did the pti with similar experience, and passed it. I had the basic tree inspection course too and had done surveys and inspections a bit. As a climber you are doing inspections on every tree you climb, ie is it safe to climb or to rig off. Hope that helps. Jan.
  19. I have gone cheapo. All bags from aldi or lidl, have lasted 2yrs already and no issues.
  20. Rob, You provide lots of useful videos online for people to educate themselves i found them very helpful buying and setting up the mill. So I think you do a good job as a teacher already. If someone can't work it out from the vids then they probably need proper training. Have you thought of offering an Introduction to Milling course? Obviously you would be charging for this, participants could maybe get a discount on milling products subsequently purchased. A number of years ago I went on a one day chainsaw course for home users, we had to have PPE but no tickets required. There were about 15 people there so even at £40 a head it could be a profitable day. Just a few of my thoughts. Jan.
  21. I was over 40 when I started, 10yrs later and I cope with the work no problem. I run my own business now and have some younger guys working with me who are keen to climb and learn, so I don't climb every day. I wouldn't fancy working for someone else and having to climb 5+ days a week. Not sure i could physically manage that, being over 50. [emoji69]
  22. Turkey oak picnic set. Made during lockdown.
  23. Hi Tom, I hope it's a busy edin/Borders office, not a ...'bust' one!
