I m basing this on scotland so may be slightly different. With TPO trees I have had to specify size of branch to remove/prune. However with CA trees you can ask for whatever you want, the only option the TO has is to approve your work or put a Tpo on the tree. If the client is adamant on severe reduction I will ask for 30 or even 50% reductions, as the other option is a full removal, it's better to keep a tree than lose it completely. This is especially with low quality trees. However, if I think the tree is possibly worthy of tpo I will be more conservative with my request, ie as per bs3998. Bs3998 specifies that reductions should be more specific than a % reduction, and you should quantify length branches to be reduced by. Look up your 3998 reduction info. All the best, Jan.

I have used my subbies 540i a lot and it is great, I then bought a husky battery pole saw on the back of that, and again great. The 540i is so good I am thinking of buying one too. Not only is it amazingly powerful but it's quiet, no need for ear muffs, we can hear each other and talk, and no pull start! They are the future. (Sure the Stihl stuff is good too, but not used it.)

I reckon the VAT threshold will be significantly reduced. Don't bother me now as I went vat registered ghis year.

Depends on the width but I have made tool trays with 20l Chain oil containers cut in half. If you're lucky they may be the right size.

so stop saying 2 ropes. HSe report was not reviewed, it was coveniently ignored by HSE. However they have not produced new evidence to make it out of date. It is the most up to date review of 2 rope working in many situations. So until something newer comes along it is still the best we have. If you have other evidence to counter this I would be interested.

Paddy have your read Techie Paul's post on this? Do you know who he is or his job? he states 2 rope are not compulsory, and yet you bang on repeating stuff that is wrong. Have some humility/undertanding of your limited knowledge, rather than speaking like an expert. You don't have to use 2 ropes, 2 attachments yes in many circumstances. However rigging is where this falls down, do you have a rigging ticket? Having an extra rope system whilst doing rigging was shown by HSE review to present other risks. This was all highlighted when the 2 ropes issue kicked off again a couple of years ago. Check out the highlighted quote below. Who published this? HSE ffs. I think your approach could be regarded as dogmatic imho!

First aid knowledge, if you can get a first aider cert from other things you do it is another asset to the team. Someone should have first aid at work anyway but extra bods are helpful.

7.5t sound nice but are lots more hoops to jump through. I've toyed with the idea, also depends how good access is generally to jobs. Another option is the cabstar (or similar) route. Still 3.5t but a lighter vehicle so bigger payload. Imo your chip truck is the backbone of your outfit, if it is unreliable you'll quickly start losing [emoji383] and gives you loads of grief. It is nice being out the NHS and not having to do tonnes of paperwork, however some of it is important so stay on top of it. I'm using Quickbooks for my accounts which makes invoicing and tracking payments very easy. As Roughy says slow down a bit, to have so many near misses in a year isn't good and yer luck will run out. Different world from gravity fed to a 230. The wee chippers are a good starting point but can do your head in if your used to bigger ones. I was including Vat in my guess btw. I think 17k will be ex vat. J.

I am in very similar position to the OP, but do have an accountant already and am planning my VAT reg. Quickbooks saves me loads of time, especially sending out invoices and checking I've been paid and tracking expenses. For just under £15 a month it is well worth it for me. Just my thoughts. j.

Hi rich, like Steve says it's about income not salary. I'm over 50 now and have a good credit history. Not really looking for another mortgage or finance. Best set up is dependent on circumstances.

Depends on your business set up how long you've been trading etc. I'm now a limited company so can take a small salary £8k a year then take the remainder in dividend from the business profits. As a Ltd I cant help myself to money in the same way a sole trader can. If you are sole trader you can take as much as you like, but make sure you leave enough to pay you tax and NI and pre paid tax at the end of the year!

Smart load relay, theres a code next to it which is ot12.1042 (possibly part no.). It was £66 ex vat. Jan.

Hi, I had the same issue with tw230. I had to get an extra box added, to the chipper side, to match the transit output with the led lights. The timberwolf dealer did it, think it was about £80 fitted. I had to put on an extra light board until the new part arrived. The extra box fitted on the chassis, if you dealer is a bit away they could post it to you, fitting it is a 20min job. Jan.

I assume you'll get felling to 380mm, rescue and chainsaw from rope and harness and maybe chipper etc in 4 wks. It should make you very employable so long as you realise you will have 'all the paper but no idea'. It takes at least a couple of years to get ok then at 5yrs you'll be a solid arb.

I am a beginner miller too, but I use watered down pva glue on the ends, 2 or 3 coats. I think the quoted drying times are 1yr per inch plus a year. Although I made a picnic bench with fresh slabs this year and its not warped at all. Surprisingly. J.
