  1. How many trees are you talking about? I plant in bracken and have done ok - I use a hand held scythe to knock the bracken back.
  2. if you have your own chainsaw you could make some Swedish candles and sell them?

    Territorial Army?
  4. It depends... do you need cut timber yourself? or perhaps a very close neighbour does? At the moment there is too much felled timber and not enough buyers... A tree can stay windblown for circa two years before it becomes unsuitable for planks. If I was you I'd wait for timber prices to rise then try and sell your near wagon full. I personally don't see you getting much more than firewood money in the meantime...
  5. I think the problem would be that if the outer "topped" trees were blown over the trees in the centre would still be exposed to the wind. If I was planting a plantation I'd consider having a perimeter of hardwoods that would act as a windbreak.
  6. How many acres do you have? once the windblow gets to them you'll lose more and more... it might be best to fell the lot if they are saw log size. I believe the science behind it is that the exterior trees in a softwood forest are exposed to the winds, this means their roots are relatively well developed. The interior trees don't get any wind, this means their roots are weak. Once the exterior trees are removed the interior trees go down like a set of dominoes.
  7. It could be very funny if people entered into a bidding war for these trees....
  8. tbh, I can see employing a friend causing a lot of aggro long term...
  9. give him an extra tenner? try other subbies out and see how they compare?
  10. I'm also a plant first then stake man. As others have said a claw hammer is rubbish, get a "mash hammer". When I started out I compacted the ground after planting with my foot. However I now compact with the mash hammer (less standing up and then bending down). If all your stuff is on site I think 200 trees a day is an OK amount. PS just thinking, are your trees "cell grown" or "bare root"? I plant cell grown, if I was planting bare root I might put the stake in first.
  11. Have you taken photos of the work you completed? They can't really argue too much if you have pics of a freshly cut tree stump. Tell your story on trip adviser etc - it would put me off going to a hotel if they were shafting local tradespeople.
  12. I think it's one of those jobs where if you lived locally it could be OK... I can't imagine it would be particularly hard work and you'd get sick pay and a pension.. 38 days paid leaves a fair amount of time for "homers".
  13. Perhaps mention a lot of logs sold in the UK are shipped in from East europe...
  14. I had a job working in the warehouse of a large department store. Sometimes the clothing manufacturer would put the wrong label into the clothes.... We'd have to put a new sticky label over the original label saying "100% polyamide" or whatever...
  15. Fair enough, but when our accountant sends us our family companies annual accounts it's always interesting to see how areas of income and expenditure have changed over the years... Perhaps you could give some of your expenses to see if they seem high to other arb firms? It's possible you are paying too much for things like insurance (my dad managed to save himself £10k a year on a building he owned by changing insurance broker)? One thing you wrote, that surprised me, was that you said you spent a lot on flyers? It strikes me that a couple of thousand flyers shouldn't cost that much to print and you could deliver them when tree work is rained off? Anyway, thumbs up from me. It's good you give addicts a second chance.
  16. I'm never anywhere near the maximum allowed weight when I go on a normal holiday. I'd love to know what's in the ginormous suitcases you see at airports..
  17. tbh, unless you're willing to post your annual accounts I cant see you getting much useful feedback...
  18. At the risk of going off topic, I'd be interested in how you are getting on with your heat pump? How many units of energy do you get out for each unit of electricity? Good luck with your charcoal venture anyway
  19. I'd imagine softwood from Sweden would have growth rings tighter than a mouse's waistcoat....
  20. How about planting some Christmas trees?
  21. How about a "like" button (If no one has previously mentioned it)?
  22. it must be a bummer where are you considering emigrating too?

    Prices

I buy a builders bag of hardwood logs for £65. We use 1m cubic gabion baskets as a log store, each bag is circa 0.65m3. I have to admit I'd love a m3 of logs at some of the prices quoted here...
  24. Perhaps drive round industrial estates in your area? If you see a semi empty yard knock on the door and see if you could rent space?
