  1. give him an extra tenner? try other subbies out and see how they compare?
  2. I'm also a plant first then stake man. As others have said a claw hammer is rubbish, get a "mash hammer". When I started out I compacted the ground after planting with my foot. However I now compact with the mash hammer (less standing up and then bending down). If all your stuff is on site I think 200 trees a day is an OK amount. PS just thinking, are your trees "cell grown" or "bare root"? I plant cell grown, if I was planting bare root I might put the stake in first.
  3. Have you taken photos of the work you completed? They can't really argue too much if you have pics of a freshly cut tree stump. Tell your story on trip adviser etc - it would put me off going to a hotel if they were shafting local tradespeople.
  4. I think it's one of those jobs where if you lived locally it could be OK... I can't imagine it would be particularly hard work and you'd get sick pay and a pension.. 38 days paid leaves a fair amount of time for "homers".
  5. Perhaps mention a lot of logs sold in the UK are shipped in from East europe...
  6. I had a job working in the warehouse of a large department store. Sometimes the clothing manufacturer would put the wrong label into the clothes.... We'd have to put a new sticky label over the original label saying "100% polyamide" or whatever...
  7. Fair enough, but when our accountant sends us our family companies annual accounts it's always interesting to see how areas of income and expenditure have changed over the years... Perhaps you could give some of your expenses to see if they seem high to other arb firms? It's possible you are paying too much for things like insurance (my dad managed to save himself £10k a year on a building he owned by changing insurance broker)? One thing you wrote, that surprised me, was that you said you spent a lot on flyers? It strikes me that a couple of thousand flyers shouldn't cost that much to print and you could deliver them when tree work is rained off? Anyway, thumbs up from me. It's good you give addicts a second chance.
  8. I'm never anywhere near the maximum allowed weight when I go on a normal holiday. I'd love to know what's in the ginormous suitcases you see at airports..
  9. tbh, unless you're willing to post your annual accounts I cant see you getting much useful feedback...
  10. At the risk of going off topic, I'd be interested in how you are getting on with your heat pump? How many units of energy do you get out for each unit of electricity? Good luck with your charcoal venture anyway
  11. I'd imagine softwood from Sweden would have growth rings tighter than a mouse's waistcoat....
  12. How about planting some Christmas trees?
  13. How about a "like" button (If no one has previously mentioned it)?
  14. it must be a bummer where are you considering emigrating too?

    Prices

I buy a builders bag of hardwood logs for £65. We use 1m cubic gabion baskets as a log store, each bag is circa 0.65m3. I have to admit I'd love a m3 of logs at some of the prices quoted here...
  16. Perhaps drive round industrial estates in your area? If you see a semi empty yard knock on the door and see if you could rent space?
  17. I work in construction and we were given a training course on safety. We were told about the "safety pyramid". Seemingly, there is a ratio of 600 near misses to 30 accidents to 10 serious accidents to 1 fatality. It means if you can reduce the near misses at the bottom of the pyramid you also reduce the fatalities... I think we've all seen near misses and turned a blind eye..
  18. An existing road like that would be lucky to be resurfaced every 20 years. The work involved would involve planing out the top 50mm and replacing with a new surface course. Ie the work wouldn't impact on the trees. Tree roots really mess up drainage pipes though... The roots search for water and can block sewers A lot of contractors putting ducts in pavements smash up tree roots...
  19. Interesting, how long does the garlic work before the rain washes it away? Do you have a trade name for the garlic pesticide you used?
  20. Going slightly off topic. I understand if you pour a litre of petrol onto still water it covers something like an acre of water. I've always thought that pouring petrol onto still water and lighting it would be unbelievable fun/stupid* *delete as applicable.
  21. What type of spray and repellent are you talking about? I've heard stories that deer don't like the smell of garlic and if you put a garlic clove in the hole when you're planting the tree it keeps the deer away. Anyone tried it? I've also heard if you put human hair round the trees it keeps the deer away. Anyone tried it?
  22. It might help if you give the tree species/ size etc? What do you use it for? Firewood? Tbh, I can't see trees at the side of the field being particularly valuable - sawmills want nice straight timber with no side branches.
  23. Do you remember about ten years ago there was a big fuss about cars in the UK being so much more expensive compared to mainland Europe? The car manufacturers were just trying to maximise profit as the UK is a wealthier country...

    eBay

I don't know if anyone else uses this "trick". But I sometimes find that companies selling stuff on ebay charge more than through their own websites. I assume when they sell through their own site they save on ebay fees. I choose what I want to buy on ebay then check the companies own website
