  1. There does seem to be a sea change in politics. Trump is doing amazingly well after making some controversial comments about Muslims... The political right are going from strength to strength in Europe... I can see "interesting" times ahead...
  2. As opposed to the rest of the politicians that just ignore the fears of the electorate? Politicians have been ignoring the fears of the population for decades now. It's good to have someone that actually listens.
  3. IMHO, Farage is the best politician we've had since Churchill. When you see him in debate he just runs rings round everyone else.
  4. My colleague was a Project Manager on a £50m civil engineering project. They had to stop work due to a nesting..... seagull.
  5. Respect!
  6. Lol! it's good to see them turn "worthless copses" into nice productive farmland with bulldozers and explosives. It really is amazing how attitudes have changed. I'd assume in 1959 the memory of food rationing was still alive and they had a different attitude towards food production.
  7. Forestry has always seemed cyclical though. I remember about 20 years ago my dad selling standing timber (chip) for 10 pence a tonne... Let's pray for favourable currency movements and some bitterly cold winters.
  8. would it be in bad taste to have a sweepstake in which celebrity pops their clogs next?
  9. I wrote to 'Jim'll Fixit' to meet Gary Glitter and never got a response. Looking back I had a lucky escape....
  10. In 5 weeks I'm off to...... Romania! I can't wait to see Dracula's Castle, museums, the beach, shooting ranges, aerial train in Constanta, and lap dancers Anyone else off somewhere?
  11. I understand that they degrade in sunlight. However that just means that they just disintegrate into smaller pieces of plastic. I'm still using some shelters that were originally used in 1986.... Anyone else remember when the tree shelters were that pink colour?
  12. I'd suggest that any contractor that criticises the local authority in the press lacks judgement....
  13. They hate us and consider us sub human.
  14. You're all behaving like a bunch of sprats. I wish you would take it seariously.
  15. I wish everyone would stop talking carp!
  16. tbh, I think it's more distasteful that Top Gear close down London over a weekend for this stunt. lol, Matt LeBlanc isn't aging well, he looks like he's been drinking methylated spirits. Bring back Jeremy! He was a lot better than all this artificial outrage rubbish.
  17. I worked in the Middle East and there was hardly any crime. You would see brand new Range Rovers outside the supermarket with the engine running and no one inside and they weren't touched. If we cut off hands for theft our crime rates would go down as well.
  18. How many trees are you talking about? I plant in bracken and have done ok - I use a hand held scythe to knock the bracken back.
  19. if you have your own chainsaw you could make some Swedish candles and sell them?

    Territorial Army?
  21. It depends... do you need cut timber yourself? or perhaps a very close neighbour does? At the moment there is too much felled timber and not enough buyers... A tree can stay windblown for circa two years before it becomes unsuitable for planks. If I was you I'd wait for timber prices to rise then try and sell your near wagon full. I personally don't see you getting much more than firewood money in the meantime...
  22. I think the problem would be that if the outer "topped" trees were blown over the trees in the centre would still be exposed to the wind. If I was planting a plantation I'd consider having a perimeter of hardwoods that would act as a windbreak.
  23. How many acres do you have? once the windblow gets to them you'll lose more and more... it might be best to fell the lot if they are saw log size. I believe the science behind it is that the exterior trees in a softwood forest are exposed to the winds, this means their roots are relatively well developed. The interior trees don't get any wind, this means their roots are weak. Once the exterior trees are removed the interior trees go down like a set of dominoes.
  24. It could be very funny if people entered into a bidding war for these trees....
  25. tbh, I can see employing a friend causing a lot of aggro long term...
