  1. If you're man handling wouldn't want to go above head height (1.8m), if it'll be there for a while you'd want it up on bearers so maybe only 1.5m of wood. I'd say the stack would cover around 34m2 of space at that height. Out of interest why go for hardwood for a biomass boiler? It takes twice as long to season and costs more per kWh
  2. Thanks, just the info I was looking for. So seems like; Pre-care: Cut the grass a few days before, removing all loose matter to prevent sweating and fungal problems. Apply fungicide. After-care: Aerate, reseed, fertilise Not sure about aerating before as although this could help combat sweating, all the immediate footfall on a recently aerated lawn could cause more damage than prevents? The growth inhibitor is interesting but will probably try the above and see how get on. Thanks again
  3. Looking for some advice into how to manage a lawn that will be having marquees on and off all summer. The marquees are all large commercial style and will be up for 4-5 days a time and roughly every 2 weeks. Was wondering is it best to cut the grass before or after, what height, additional care, etc? Any info would be appreciated as last year patches suffered quite badly from chlorosis and poor growth. Cheers.

    Good books...

Bit late to the party but this a good book for anyone ever north of the border. Really good history and interesting facts about the most famous trees and woodlands up here.
  5. The cluster of buds at the tip makes me think oak, by the colour I'd guess English Oak
  6. Very windy here, a neighbouring farmer had two 60ft wind turbines put up just last week, they were there this morning, not there now
  7. Aye so not necessarily anything to do with the travelers then, they've been pretty well behaved actually but probably to do with the fact they managed to buy the land.
  8. They leave them in the boot or just around the tree itself?
  9. Some travelers near me, I've twice noticed a boot screwed to trees along the roadside. No idea if it's anything to do with them or what it is about
  10. Think they are in a battle with Netflix but hope to get it and put it on Sky Atlantic so Virgin can't get it
  11. Heard on the grapevine that Sky have got them under the title "Top Speed"
  12. Thanks, what capacity is yours? For the 800kg Landmark want £185 but can get the same model on ebay for just £97
  13. Looking for advice for a decent value winch just for pulling back hung up trees to get them down. Got a bit of lodged windblow (medium size softwoods) in an area too wet and dense to use the tractor and chain. Won't be using it for felling or pulling over trees. Would love a tirfor but can't justify it for a handfull of trees in own woodlands.
  14. One of the bigger firewood guys round me has got one of the bag suppliers to custom make bags for him which better suit his set-up.
  15. If it's just 2.4 then only suitable for chip. If it was 2.5 then could get an extra fiver for pallet if quality was there.
  16. Looks quite reasonably priced to me, considering free postage, packaging, etc, people need to make a bit of profit. This is what I call taking the **** tree cake stand by cairn wood design | notonthehighstreet.com
  17. Given all the other countries UK Top Gear is shown/sold to, I woudn't be surprised if it brought in more revenue than the licence fees. I imagine the BBC are desperate to get rid of him but can't afford to.
  18. I thought it was 14yrs old in the UK but could be wrong Pet hate is when you have adult cyclists on the pavement who expect you to step onto the road so they can get past.
  19. If there was no felling licence can he not only sell 2 cube of it? What with the high risk and money changing hands would you be covered if something went wrong?
  20. Indeed and as others have said it's a sycamore stub
  21. Sycamore aswell here, the bark and branch structure, plus the size of the rings. HC bark is a lot thicker
  22. Not good news BBC News - Crufts dog death: Poisoning probe after Irish Setter dies
  23. The width is stem to stem, but it can be <20m if the trees are bridging two larger woodlands or is a small bit jotting out For the field/woodland you would split it, however there is always going to be a grey area where the gradient/transition is less apparent You can have non-NFI woodlands though, the NFI category is basically a cut-off point of whether the woodland is of signaficant size and importance to measure. The aim is to measure in detail 1% of UK woodlands and then use that info with computer/aerial imagery to get a good idea of UK woodlands (species, ages, composition, timber potential, wildlife, etc).
