  1. The ECHR didn't rule to turn off life support. They decided not to intervene, upholding the judgement of the British courts saying that it is “not for the court to substitute itself for the competent domestic authorities”. It was the British courts who decided it lawful to withdraw life support. I don't see how on one hand you can be disgusted by the ECHR for not intervening and overturning the British courts decision, and on the other hand not want the ECHR to intervene in British matters?
  2. When did Macron say that quote in your image? Or is this more fake news?
  3. You've missed his point, deliberately or not. He is referring to the reaction of the police in the event of an attack. He is saying that the security services in London should be prepared in the the event terrorists attacks. And that security services should be watching out for potential threats. How you are arguing against those statements is baffling, are you saying that the police in London should not be prepared or watch out for terrorist attacks? "I’m not going to speculate as to how the police in New York should react. What I do know is part and parcel of living in a great global city is you gotta be prepared for these things, you gotta be vigilant, you gotta support the police doing an incredibly hard job, you gotta support the security services. And I think speculating, when you don’t know the facts, is unwise." Whether you think they "need" to be is obviously a different matter and not at all what he was talking about (as much as you can try to twist his words).
  4. No, the claim in the image is a deliberate misquote used by those of a far right affiliation. If you actually read what he said in context he was referring to being prepared and vigilant is being part and parcel of living in a big city; “part and parcel of living in a great, global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things, you’ve got to be vigilant, you’ve got to support the police” This thread should have a fake news button.
  5. As someone who has lived in Sweden for several years now and has worked on Syrian and Eritrean refugee projects whilst here, in my opinion the posts on this thread by the 'arb-right' (see what I did there?) offer a completely distorted view of reality over here. The desire by those back in the UK to see the Swedish system fail in order to in some perverse way justify their views is abhorrent. The fact that Sweden had to in effect take on the responsibility of the UK and other countries, putting immense pressure on the system (which a lot of the issues can be attributed to) and now we have the audacity of those in the UK to criticise the actions of Sweden for not being able to handle the situation perfectly. Sweden is a great country that didn't lose faith in humanity and did the right thing.
  6. Interesting to hear about how easily it spreads My local botanical gardens are proudly growing both Japanese Knotweed and Giant Knotweed, both right next to major paths and park entrances/exits. There is no information on show regarding the invasiveness or impacts either. I did FB them to ask about it, esp seeing as they are only use organic methods. They just said they pride themselves is growing species from around the world. The botanics are in the town centre as well.
  7. From the rate of growth on the new shoots the third one could be goat willow.
  8. A novel way of cutting and splitting logs in one go without any saw blades or rams. No way perfect as you can see from the logs jamming and irregular splitting but a bit of re-engineering could be close to being fully automated.
  9. Could perhaps just be leaf spot as there are several fungi that can cause these on copper beach trees. I think some start off as purple before going darker. They are not considered serious to the health of the tree

Wales have already taken NI out of Europe twice this week
  11. I think the lack of good cutters could also why employers are reluctant to pay piece work. There are a lot of inexperienced cutters who will see the pound signs and rush the job at the expense of safe working to fell as many in a day.
  12. I remember reading a study which found that an individual would rather have a smaller income as long as it was still higher than all their neighbours, than have a larger income but be the lowest paid on the street/neighbourhood (assuming everyone knew how much each other was earning).
  13. It could make sense to be "courteous" if it means less chance of someone reporting the theft to the police.
  14. Cherries, peaches and grapes are the only fruits that grow in my greenhouse. As long as you pick appropriate varieties everything else can grow happily outside. For fruits like raspberries, currants, blackberries, strawberries, etc it can be a good idea to build a fruit cage for bird protection. These can be expensive to buy but you make a DIY one cheaply, I used some poles from a cheap gazebo that someone was throwing away and then some bird netting bought online. Because it is simple and quick to put up I just use the cage when the fruit is ripening in the summer then take it down again so it doesn't get damaged by wind/snow and don't have to worry about birds getting trapped inside. Also make sure you get some automatic vents for your greenhouse.
  15. There are plenty of apple, pear, plum and damson trees that grow well outdoors in harsh climates, you just have to do a bit if research first before you buy. The fruit trees I would/do grow in greenhouses would be peaches, nectarines and cherries (both for warmth and bird protection). These are best grown on small rootstocks trained as a fan but do need more attention through watering and pollination.
  16. If Stihl have a partnership with a company who have been proven to be responsible with illegal logging then I don't think it is unreasonable to petition Stihl to sever direct ties with that company. This would come under Stihl's corporate social and environmental responsibility. However there are 2 issues with the links provided. One is that they are poorly formed, heavily opinionated and to be frank amateurish. The second and most important is that they lack proof, they just state reports have been submitted, in the process of taking legal action, etc. I am not saying that their/your claims are not true, but you need more than just asking people to "take your word for it"
  17. Regarding insects, in general oak, willow and birch support the most insect species.
  18. Been on FB for close to 10yrs now. Have to say hardly ever "browse" or upload anything anymore, only really use the messaging service. However the call feature is great, being able to phone family and friends in other countries for free from your mobile is very handy.
  19. Remember birch can hybridize easily as well.
  20. Do you believe that all the wood imported into the UK is kiln dried to less than 20% http://Arbtalk: Pitfalls of importing
  21. There's little hope for renewables in the UK if the government are going to continue there heavy subsidy approach. Just look at domestic solar. The civil servants should come over here to Sweden and learn how you can generate a sustainable, healthy and growing market for renewables without the need for subsidies. After all the Swedes know a thing a two: Sweden first fossil fuel free country in the world
  22. The UK currently imports around 49% of its natural gas (a figure due to rise to 70% by 2020), making gas the major security concern. There will also be increased competition on the world market and dwindling stocks will leave the UK vulnerable to volatility in both supply and price. If anyone is interested in an independent review of fracking in the UK (from people who know what they are talking about) then I recommend this Royal Academy of Engineering There is a lot of sensationalism and scare tactics that started in America and have been latched onto by the UK environmentalism sector. All I can say is I have not seen a justifiable reason to ban fracking (yes there are risks but these are no greater than those from the current oil and gas pipelines we already have beneath us). And yes I would be happy for fracking in my backyard.
  23. “I’m proud of my net worth. I’ve done an amazing job.”
  24. I heard the reason Bandit made this video was due to the number of fatalities of climbers due to this in the USA, but I understand there has been at least one in the UK, Sweden and no doubt other countries.
  25. Demo by Bandit, highlighting the importance of good rope management. [ame=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbLTPIFh1Ks]Demo Video[/ame]
