  1. The FC have a scheme called the National Forest Inventory (NFI). Ordnance Survey seem to have a different set of rules for defining a woodland. If you were determining whether the wood meets the NFI criteria or not; Is the woodland >0.5ha? Is the woodland >20m wide? Is the canopy cover >20% or have the potential to achieve this through maturation of the crop? (this even includes any saplings and seedlings) Whether gaps split a woodland it depends on whether they are permanent features (ie roads, tarmac, etc) and the distance between potential driplines For calculating the woodland area, if there are no boundary features (fences, walls) then you would measure from the stem line, although sometimes the dripline depending on the neighbouring land use.
  2. It could also be all the water running off the roof and splashing off the concrete onto the logs. I found that with my log store which has a front sliding roof and on a hard surface. Put a 6" board across the bottom which sorted it out.
  3. I presume it would be an agreement similar to this; Woodlots
  4. Arb boys need to earn more, all that expensive shampoo for their ponytails
  5. Regarding woodland trees falling onto roads, it was my understanding that the law is if the tree failure could have been foreseen (previously uprooted, cracks, rotten, etc) then the owner can be held liable for any damage/accident caused. If there was no indication that the tree was about to fail then you cannot be held liable. How does the addition of woodland insurance affect this?
  6. Some of the less durable species (lime, birch, HC, etc) will start to degrade in the log shed after 2yrs, even when down to <20%MC

He's not a famous name, you can probably figure it out if you have nothing more pressing to do on V-day:001_tongue:. Got a lot of of respect for him as after rugby set up and ran a successful accountancy business and just loves rugby especially inspiring young kids, very modest guy.

Not going to name drop on a public forum (as I know he'd hate that) but toured 68 and 71

Off to Murrayfield tomorrow, don't want to tempt fate but more optimistic than previous years
  12. There is the whole radiation thing but given the fact this guy works 50hrs a week forestry cutting for 30yrs is hard to tell That was covered in the first aid with forestry, a pretty sad story about a guy being trapped for an hour or so, being perfectly conscience and coherent but as soon as the load is lifted he died, worse thing was knew it would happen
  13. I know a forester who keeps his mobile under his chainsaw helmet on vibrate so can tell immediately if anyone calls.
  14. I'm guessing that even with 5m spacing and regular pruning to lift the canopy the trees would need to be harvested after 15-20yrs before shade, leaf litter, etc started to impact grazing quality? In this case you won't get anything for a conifer crop which leaves establishing a broadleaved coppice, but you would have to fence off 10-15% on rotation to allow new shoots to establish, taking land out of production. I'm struggling to see the financial incentive unless it's growing apples in south England.
  15. The growing of trees and keeping of livestock on the same piece of land. Planting relatively low number of trees (200-400 trees/ha) without any adverse impact on current sheep/cattle stocking densities. Agroforestry
  16. I see there may be grants for agroforestry in the new round of CAP. Does anyone have any experience/opinions of it, more in relation to woodfuel/timber production than food production?
  17. Would also be worth organising a visit from a woodland agent and/or harvesting contractor. They could estimate the timber potential and financial cost/return of clear felling. 5.5 acres isn't a lot and depending on the SSSI, timber quality, terrain, haulage, replanting, etc the operation could end up costing you far more than you'll get back.
  18. Been taking advantage of the frozen ground and pulling timber out, the highlands have been doing a good job at finishing off the snedding.
  19. Burning wood that I have previously coppiced, no need to burn trees that I have planted as my old man and his planted enough trees for a couple of lifetimes.
  20. There is a couple of studies out there coppice yields, hazel density, etc. These give good scientific grounding, theory, advice, etc but I imagine yield classes would be so site specific they would be little more than a punt
  21. This document suggests you get more shoots the higher the cut, but that they are more unstable. Protecting coppice regrowth is what I struggle most with so keen on hearing peoples opinions.
  22. T-shirt weather yesterday, then this today
  23. I prefer to fence off my woodlands but have gates that I never lock. By ensuring that people access from only 2 or 3 points you can be more confident that they will read signs warning timber harvesting dates plus interesting info on history, ecology, maps, etc which should add to the experience.
  24. More trees down last night, this is getting a bit silly now.
  25. Got any pics? Have a large bit sitting and was wondering what the grain is like, cheers
