  1. Plan B might have to be dropping off some flyers this weekend, doesn't help when a farmer 1/2 mile away is selling at £25 m3 inc delivery .
  2. Used to have a Yeti, great car. Averaged 45mpg (4x4 constantly on and included a lot of forest tracks), handled off road well and could do 400 miles a day and not feel tired. Only downside was not great ground clearance. Would certainly recomend
  3. Then oven method is scientific method (ie 105 C until a constant weight is reached), but having never used it for a firewood log it may well not the most practical. To speed up the process you could use a low density species (eg spruce) and cut the log into kindling sized pieces.
  4. Set the oven to 105 C, then just measure the wood every 24hrs until it stops getting lighter.
  5. For a one off piece best contacting local sawmills. But in the general terms over here a full load of top quality douglas (large diameter 6.2s) can go for between £65 to £100 per tonne delivered depending on location.
  6. Thanks for the replies and comments. However I was meaning more of an association of producers though, not so much a regulatory body (all you need to prove is you don't sell foreign timber). It just seems that there is no voice for firewood producers in what is a large and growing industry, but maybe there isn't need for one?
  7. Fair enough, as a woodland owner myself I appreciate it's your timber and can do what you want with it. When faced with similar occasions like this chainsaw milling on site often provides the most financial sense, but if you don't think you have a market for the products then sometimes firewood is all it can be.
  8. Why is this in the firewood forum? Surely you can't be thinking of a straight 12m, 75cm diameter trunk of beech going as logs?
  9. Were you not paying attention in maths class? Volume = length x (pi x r squared) Just remember to keep your units constant
  10. Perhaps some mini guttering would help?
  11. Seconded, splits very easy and dries quick as well. Need to get it under cover quickly once split I find or else soon gets an ugly mould on the surface.
  12. Just got wondering this based on the thread regarding industry standard Is there a reason why there is no "British Firewood Association" seeing as there seems to be an association for everything else these days? I realise you have hetas, the FC's usewoodfuel and such but they're not quite what I mean. I'd guess its purpose could be the go to source of information for the public, provide press releases, area suppliers list, lobby over concerns, promote the use of British firewood, survey members to gain info on the size, growth, concerns of the industry, etc, etc. I guess membership would be based on primarily proving you sell British, maybe also having to list clearly key info (container volume, species, moisture, etc). In return you can promote that you are a member (maybe a logo, something similar to the Red Tractor). I suppose the answer will be there has there has never been any need for one/waste of money, but is that the case?
  13. Issue could be that the top half won't get exposed to the wind with the tarp over, might not get mould but wouldn't dry as quick

    Lyme disease

My GP sent my blood sample off to the "National Lyme Borreliosis Testing Laboratory" in Inverness.
  15. Hi Ash1, out of interest did you have to kiln dry the beam or apply any treatment to it? Cheers

    Lyme disease

You can't request a blood test yourself, they have to be autherised by your GP. You can request an appointment with your GP and explain your situation then (as I did). What with early symptoms often being "flu-like" and winter coming up it could be worth it for your peace of mind.
  17. Thought I'd share my experience as a wee reminder to others. Just got confirmed that I have been exposed to the bacteria, starting a 2 week course of antibiotics that should clear it. Spent this spring/summer carrying out woodland surveys, getting bit by ticks about once a week I reckon. Never got any symptoms or the "bulls eye" rash but thought it would be best to get checked anyway once the contract finished. Felt a bit guilty about wasting the doctor's time, getting blood test sent off to experts in Inverness, etc, but glad I did it now. Being self-employed would hate to imagine if I'd left it and ended up hospitalised/unable to work for weeks on end. My barber got it when out dog walking was bitten on the b****ck whilst wearing shorts. Had to explain to his boss at the time why he was late as he had to get his missus to help get it off (his missus that is, not his boss's)! Just goes to show it can only take one bite. Cheers Lucan
  18. Better make sure you don't reuse them by mistake then, enough crap coming out of people's mouths as it is.
  19. The quality is the firewood at 25cm and <20%MC, the stacking in crates of certain sizes has nothing to do with quality of the firewood product. If you're going to say no one in the UK can match the quality at least be clear you mean quality of it's presentation, not solely the product itself. I know presentation is important but to say Latvian firewood is universally better quality than UK because it comes neatly packed is incorrect.
  20. What is the price and quality you're looking for and maybe someone on here can?
  21. Been discussed here before stacked-v-loose-logs-conversion-rate
  22. Aye, have decided to use one of those supermarket jute "bags for life", hold around a net a time which suits me. Plus being an equally tight Scot when they wear out I can return them and get a new one free
