  1. Reason it's cheap is because it's 75% lodgepole about to get infected, best bet is clearfell and sell it all to Balcas. 1300 ha of lodgepole sounds like hell on earth.
  2. Anyone know any decent ones, something to bring the logs in from shed and sit next to the stove, ideally free standing and looks good? The only decent ones I can find are all in the States. Came across a few gems when looking though; This one for price This one for style
  3. Image of the Giants fireplace here I know there are places up here with 11ft stone single lintels
  4. Cheers, can't imagine bigger than that, especially going but the size of the logs/trees they're burn there
  5. Strange question but wondering if anyone on here knows? Presume it will be a medieval castle somewhere?
  6. Looks like they're sold out but could give them a call barrow bags You might be able to get them cheaper but I just offer customers the cost off next order if I get the bag back, seems to work.
  7. Got my bags off ebay, good quality and quick delivery. I'd recommend trialling them first with your current system. The 0.2m3 bags you can load/unload yourself, not sure about the larger sizes. Be prepared for the following; Customer: "What is the size difference between your bag and my usual builder's bag?" You: "What size is your usual builder's bag?" Customer "Don't know"
  8. The difference will depend on the species you're selling, ash for example wouldn't be as much of a difference as sitka spruce. Moisture Contents If you agree on the equivalent price of seasoned (say around 20% MC) then you can use the above link (table pg5) to calculate the relative price for green wood. Make sure you know if the the difference between "wet basis" and "dry basis" when calculating MC
  9. Don't deal with little 8 wheelers up here in big tree country Would depend on the wagon, length of log, straightness, etc but I would think the 16 tonne figure mentioned would be pretty close There's a good bit of literature out there about the weights of different species at varying moisture contents. If he's just had a biomass boiler fitted and doesn't understand the difference of wet and dry logs he could be headed to a costly mistake
  10. Surely just agree a price per tonne then multiple by the weight shown on the timber lorry? The current set up seems a bit strange, does he just tell you that it weighed such and such 3 months later and without any proof?
  11. Cheers that's what I thought, just reading the last part made me doubt myself
  12. Could someone just clarify this. Say for example you want to thin a small woodland over a year. Every calender quarter you fell 3 cube of larch and 2 of ash. At the end of the year you decide to keep the 12 cube of larch for yourself and sell the 8 of ash. Can you sell the all 8 in one go or are you limited to selling at a quota of 2 per quarter? Cheers
  13. Not used them yet but was going to put in an order for next year from here. Was going for the corn starch as heard good things and not too expensive.
  14. Not until some massively overinflated subsidy creating an unstable market comes in
  15. Doubt it. One of the biggest timber companies tried it. Wasn't financially viable. Think of the extra effort to harvest/forward the stumps to roadside, how many you can transport on the back of a wagon, the washing and cleaning required prior to processing, etc. They lost a lot of money in the end.
  16. 30 minute compilation of John Inverdale patronising the Scottish rugby team?
  17. Found this little maggot in some firewood today. Roundheaded Borer Larva. Found in firewood when it has been left to dry slowly (ie bark on, unsplit, open to the elements, etc).
  18. Would it not only be an issue if cash is being exchanged or some other sort of contract? If not I might of got lucky in the situation I mentioned in my earlier post
  19. Are the logs seasoned or unseasoned? If they're seasoned (<20% MC) then you can stack them tight. However if they're unseasoned you would want to leave around 4" between stacks to allow air to circulate, this would probably cancel out the space saved by stacking them.
  20. In my view a log fire makes a house a home, as my own logs don't cost me anything, why not have it on as much as possible? It's not so much to do with heating, just feels better when it's on
  21. Fire's been off and on the last few weeks, can't enjoy a nice single malt without it. Switch the tv off and leave the phone and laptop next door. Just you, the fire and the water of life .
  22. I know there are places in Canada that you can cut wood for free, 99% sure not over here. You're best bet is ask a local farmer. I emphasis ask as if you take wood without permission it is theft (I don't care if someone tells you differently). I had a local ask me if I had any trees down that I didn't want. I pointed him to a large, hairy, Norway Spruce tree that had blown over. It was out of view of the general public so wasn't concerned about anyone else getting ideas. Went down to check on him later, he was cutting away wearing only trainers, cotton jogging bottoms and a t-shirt, no helmet, no eye protection or anything. Last time I'm doing that.
