  1. Scotty, Think the report you are looking for is this one? http://www.fs.fed.us/psw/programs/cufr/products/2/psw_cufr687_NYC_MFRA.pdf Summary is they value New York's 600,000 trees at $200 per tree per year, totaling $120m per year. Value is from benefits from CO2 reduction, stormwater catchment, aesthetic, etc. Given that tree maintenance costs $22m per year, for every $1 spent by the city it receives $5.60 in benefits
  2. Bobh, yes but my understanding is once the most common hardwood species (the ones used for firewood anyway) have been dried to similar moisture contents, any difference in weight is relatively insignificant (<5%). This document contains figures for kg/m3 for different species. http://www.videncenter.dk/Groenne%20trae%20haefte/Groen_Engelsk/Kap_04.pdf
  3. Solid Hardwood 1m3 green = average 1000kg (ref blue book) Solid Hardwood 1m3 at 20% MC = 750kg (ref blue book) Conversion of Solid to stacked = 0.7 (ref blue book again) => Stacked Hardwood 20% = 525kg Conversion from stacked to loose = 2/3 (ref previous threads) => 1m3 of loose hardwood 20% = 350kg Do I get extra marks for showing my working?
  4. Think you might have got your sums the other way around Steph. Based on £75 for a 0.75cm3 bag of hardwood (1200 kWh) you should get 6.25p kWh.
  5. The individual might well have a multifuel stove and therefore wanting to calculate whether it is cheaper to heat their house with firewood or coal. Based on calculations on this thread and of my own, I would say that it is significantly cheaper to heat your house with coal at the moment
  6. Stunning! Capturing the Second Largest Tree in the World in a Single Image
  7. Thanks for the replies, will have a closer look now I know what the key features are to identify.
  8. Looking for some help. These fungi have fallen from a mature beech (exposed site) some time ago. Not ideal for identification. Is it Ganoderma and if so should this tree come down as soon as possible? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
