  2. It's only a couple of stems i'm afraid so probably not worth it. Do you have contacts of any hauliers that move small loads? The only ones I've dealt with in the past are min 25 tonnes. Cheers
  3. From the lack of responses that's what I figured, cheers.
  4. Got a couple of good sized/shape logs and wondering if it is worth using the alaskan on them? I know the big sawmills turn their noses up as it is too "pulpy" but does it have any particular benefits/uses over other softwoods? Cheers
  5. Well sometimes you do. It is estimated that softwood contains 75% of energy of hardwood per volume. Therefor if your local merchant is only offering softwood 15% cheaper then why buy softwood?
  6. Don't agree with the comments on this thread towards the guy You can use your chainsaw and winch however you want, it's yours. Yes the way they were using a chainsaw was not strict H&S, but show me a 73 yr old who does. As for the fish, do you know what species they are and if they're worth eating? Or if they had surplus to requirements? I don't think you can sit on your sofa in front of your TV and call a guy who has lived in the wilderness for 25yrs a moron. If anything the presenter is more of a moron.
  7. An advantage of billets is that after you cross-cut prior to delivery you can quickly test the middle of the logs to guarantee they are dry enough. I generally just test the largest ones of certain species, only takes a couple of seconds but gives peace of mind/assurance I'm only sending out dry logs.
  8. Determining whether it is 2 or 3 needled is always a good starting point
  9. Add grated dark chocolate to venison stew or chilli to give it extra richness (no i'm not crazy) Ox cheeks are my favourite for slow cooking, cheap and proper sized portions

    Disgusting!

We get people dumping stuff on our land, building rubble, hedge cuttings, furniture, etc. One time they just tipped it onto the middle of the road, completely blocking it. Not much point putting a camera as only happens once every few months. One time found the duplicate recipient and handed it to the police but you never know if they did anything about it. The worst part is the idea that you have to spend half a day taking their rubbish to the skip for them.

    Wood id

I'm going to say larch, based on the heartwood:sapwood ratio

  13. I've had a few people tell me about how the Swedish burn their logs vertically, yet despite the amount of time I spend over their I've never come across it (maybe their just getting confused with the candle)

  15. Is that from the link I sent you? You should just have to click on "Chainsaw Lumbering" and it asks you whether you want to save or open it. Click save then retrieve it from your downloads file once it has completed downloading.
  16. If you've got spaniels there is a great book by Joe Irving i'd recommend. When talking about introducing a dog to shot, he talks about importance of knowing the difference between gun-nervous (solvable) and gun-shy (unsolvable, just unfortunate genetics).
  17. Agree too cheap, better to start off too high and reduce if needed then too low. Danger is now if you increase your price to £100 plus you'll loose your existing customers.
  18. Sent you a PM, pretty sure the pdf was created by someone who didn't have permission so not sure about if the moderators will be happy about posting the link publicly? .
  19. Just downloaded it as a free pdf, had a quick look through and looks like a lot of useful info and ideas.
  20. The softwood I sell is larch along with some winter felled pine. My 4.7 kW stove burning larch is currently keeping my open plan living room/kitchen and hallway to 20-22C all evening for total of 90p (based on what I charge) and it's currently 2C outside
  21. If I could do it again would be rig work, hard work but rewards it as it should be
  22. Seconded, great saw for brashing, snedding and firewood. But only run on aspen or similar as it's very fussy about fuel quality
