  1. Vandals wouldn't cross cut and stack the wood though (see more photos on FB page). I'd guess has been cut for firewood (either self use or for selling). Cut during a weekend morning then return during the night to remove the timber. Have been a victim myself with my own woodland.
  2. VPNs are completely legal and governments, companies, universities all use them for increased security. I would be careful of some of the free VPNs though as they have to make money somehow. Just make sure you do your homework and check they're not logging your data/activity. The best VPNs provide you with both security and privacy.
  3. Geez grandads just get yourselves a VPN already Just tell your other half it's for cyber security.
  4. Resurrecting this to agree with those about stocks and shares ISAs. I think many people only associate ISAs with the cash ISAs and its pitiful growth, not realising there are 5 more different types out there. The average stocks and shares ISA grew over 15% last year and not subject to capital gains tax. I had a look at the retirement ISA, however the 25% extra the government contributes to what you put in sounds good at first but is probably not worth it unless planning on retiring in the next 10 years. For the state pension you can easily check online if it is worth backpaying any years in which you did not contribute to NI (esp. relevant for self-employed, those spent time abroad and us youngsters who need 35 years of contribution). The cost of £600/700 to backpay a year is a good investment for an additional £250 every year to your pension income.
  5. That's because most people know the difference between climate and weather
  6. Trump: ‘Gun-adept teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly’ That sentence sums up Trump and the NRA's reasoning for wanting to arm teachers. By saying that armed teachers would 100% solve the problem means that if a child is killed in a school where teachers are armed then the blame/media focus can then go on the teachers and not the gun laws/lobby.
  7. Arborist in Sweden is normally described/advertised just as arborist or as 'trädvårdare' (tree carer). If looking only for arborist jobs then I would search using arborist or trädvårdare however some job sites might have arborist listed under skogsarbetare (however as others have said this is means forestry worker).
  8. Clearly "Finland’s trial was launched ... by a centre-right, austerity-focused government interested primarily in spending less on social security and bringing down Finland’s stubborn 8%-plus unemployment rate. It has a very clear purpose: to see whether an unconditional income might incentivise people to take up paid work."
  9. Then you've not understood it Money for nothing: is Finland's universal basic income trial too good to be true?
  10. I imagine the difference could just be due to the different geographical focus. The FAO is a global institution so they will most likely be basing the data from birch forests from regions such as northern Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, etc. These regions have far shorter growing seasons (longer and colder winters) which becomes very apparent in birch. Having burnt birch from UK and N Sweden I can easily believe the differences stated.
  11. Out of all the stupid comments there has been on this tread, that has got the be the most stupid by far.
  12. But are the costs per kw the same? Softwood has around 75% the energy of hardwood per volume, which means from the customer's side they would be looking at 70-75% to make switching interesting. However you often see softwood only around 10-15% cheaper so is it any wonder the slow demand. I guess that is because although softwood is cheaper to produce that often doesn't match a final 25% cost reduction including delivery?
  13. For all those out for a bargain - Firewood available, free to cut down What are odds of there being a felling licence/replanting plan I wonder?
  14. Self-employed builder makes bid for Carillion contracts
  15. Trump's hardcore fan base are beginning to get restless. You're hearing more and more of the "Trump the president is not Trump the candidate" on right wing outlets. The fact that he has gone for an "economy first" not the "America first" policy as promised, has not gone unnoticed amongst his more attentive anti-globalist/drain the swamp supporters. I think Bannon's attack on his family was a blessing for Trump, it allowed him to destroy Bannon and his political power so as to avoid Bannon supporting more anit-establishment/ultra conservative candidates in the upcoming Midterms and avoid another Alabama situation. His Arizona endorsement will prove this correct or not. Losing biggly in the midterms might be a blessing for Trump, then he can just blame the Dems for his failed promises of the wall, immigration and globalism. These recent remarks by Trump just help him convince his supporters he is actually still the same guy and keeping it real, while his politics say otherwise.
  16. As long as the right wing keep calling everyone who is not a Tory or UKIP voter a "libtard" "mentally challenged" "snowflake" "SJW" "who has never worked a day in their life", you have to say that's what's on the cards. They need to ask themselves, did insulting the intelligence of leave voters work for the remain camp? Did insulting the intelligence of Trump supporters work the Hilary camp? In the 2015 election 35% of 18-40s voted Labour, in 2017 that was more like 60%. But yeah keep insulting them, that's guaranteed to reverse the trend.

£70/cm and 8 inch up sounds like you've been quoted saw logs not chipwood.
  18. Daily Express: EXPOSED: Queen's new £3.1bn warship SINKING as critics slam MoD for getting 'mugged off' Daily Telegraph: HMS Queen Elizabeth leak: Navy's new £3.1bn warship 'takes on 200 litres of sea water an hour' Daily Mail:Navy's 3.1billion HMS Queen Elizabeth leak The Sun: Navy’s new £3.1bn aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is LEAKING – and repairs will cost millions The Guardian: HMS Queen Elizabeth, UK's newest and biggest aircraft carrier, springs a leak The Independent: HMS Queen Elizabeth: Leak discovered on new £3.1bn aircraft carrier
  19. I think you will be disappointed then. Take the car industry. Currently all EU countries agree on engine regulations, so that manufactures don't have to design and produce individual engines for each country, keeping costs down. This makes sense. However some think now the UK has left it can go about setting its own regulations regarding emissions of engines (get rid of pesky EU health and env standards), and that manufactures will produce specific engines for the UK market (be it Land Rover, BMW, Toyota). This will not happen, the companies like these international standards and are a powerful lobby. The UK market will still be supplied according to what the EU decides. The only difference is the UK now has no say in what those regulations that the UK will adopt should be. The car industry is just an example, same applies for almost all other international industry. When you look at other countries, you would expect the UK will mirror 90-95% of the standards that come from the EU. So technically the rules and laws will be approved in the UK, but what they are will be decided in Brussels without the voice of the UK.
  20. I agree with what you say. I have just finished my MSc here in Sweden. Having further education available to all not just those from certain backgrounds is vital to combat many of the qualities we see in society today. Furthermore the freedom of movement and work allowed me to quickly find work (with a tree surgeon) to pay the bills as I got settled. The UK gets a good deal out of it. Almost all the Brits I have met have or will return to the UK, with a high quality education (paid by the Swedish gov) which many would not of been able to afford back in the UK. The UK does not reciprocate such generosity. I really hope the next generation of Brits do not loose the same great opportunities as I've had.
  21. I think the irony bypass is on the other foot. If you research the history of Apple you will find it is one of the best examples of how successful government intervention in the free market can be.
  22. TBF I never said electric cars are fossil fuel free. In France fossil fuels contribute 8.6% of the electricity mix.
  23. Banning the sale of new petrol/diesel cars in 2040 will be as practical as banning the sale of VHS recorders in 2017. However does send a big message to the industry and I'm sure more countries will follow. Shell is still basing its long term strategy on petrol cars still being all the rage in 2080, I can imagine some of its investors beginning to question that. Once the cost and performance of electric cars overtakes conventional ones then market forces will see the end of fossil fuel cars overnight I think (this is not too far away). How many people who buy new cars would buy a petrol car when it would cost more to buy, cost more to run, cost more to maintain, has a lower range, and lower performance? Maybe some of the Jeremy "I love the smell of the internal combustion engine in the morning" Clarksons, but no way enough for the demand needed to run the production, R&D, etc required. This also applies to HGVs, when you see what the likes of Volvo and Scania are doing.
  24. That's a fair enough opinion. I just believe anyone who disagrees with the overall outcome should focus on the decisions made closer to home.
