Well I passed. Little saw did ok apart from one 3ft diamter beech tree where it was taking ages to trim butresses (against the grain) so used instructors 362 saw... Windblown next hopefully. Any books worth getting for abit extra infos about felling etc to expand on the LANTRA course book?

How old/young does the tree ideally need to be if I want to make a new pollard? If tree is two old won't lopping larger branches off it create rot, suppose its species dependent also. Iv'e seen acient unmanaged pollards (though rare locally) in countryside & street tree pollards, but zero younger ones so was thinking of trying to create a few new ones along a field boundary as supposedly they increase the lifespan of trees & I think it would be interesting etc. Just being reading Roger Deakin Wildwood had abit about pollarding used to be a common method for firewood & animal forage. Rember seeing telly program about the tradition in it in spain they were still climibinng up & using axes for pollarding...

Any pictures or infos of oak stools regrowth? Iv'e read that they can be coppiced but never seen any done, or any oak coppice stools, although the acient oaks all are supposedely pollarded/or coppiced trees which allows them too reach an older age than a un-pollarded tree. -

Oak is often pollarded I think not sure about coppicing oak. Anyway the deer would eat the regrowth. Bamboo can be either a clumping type no that invasive, or higly invasive type that sends sucker out several metres depending on variety. Why not holy, yew, beech or hormbeam native & all year round screens?

Looks really professional What tools did you use for the larger pleacher cuts, chainsaw axe or billhook etc? Iv'e done a LANTRA course but hedge we did never looked as good as any pics on here. We never trimmed the hedge a tidy shape along the top & sides after laying it. Do you use a petrol hedge trimmer?
