  1. Great analogy Stephen , its all of that or they are plain ignorant with scant regard for their own safety and others around them. I think the latter in most cases. Bob
  2. Forestry are exempt but we still have to go through the shitfest come invoice time. Bob
  3. We had a twonk run over the foot of the lad on the stop and go boards. Its dangerous out there Bob
  4. Great bit of log wrestling Bob http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=194032&stc=1&d=1448569447
  5. Winch on the mog is better Bob
  6. Was the quad towing the trailer? Bob http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=193965&stc=1&d=1448556506
  7. The reason some diesel engines freeze the fuel and others dont is all down to the water content of the fuel, its this that causes the filters to wax. Moisture free diesel will not freeze in the sorts of temperatures we get in this country. I know its hard to completely eliminate so we chuck in ten gallons of petrol for every five hundred gallons of diesel, this ratio is more than enough keep reasonably moisture free diesel moving. Its worth cleaning all the storage tanks, machines and filters before the winter sets in. Bob
  8. An old english sheepdog is quite absorbent Bob
  9. Makes sense to me that the sooner the whole thing is up to temperature the better. Bob
  10. Some blurb on it .Looks like it may help. Kenlowe Automotive Heating Systems Bob
  11. What 5 ton?? The 4x4 transits of old were more about a service truck for the utilities than a serious weight carrying truck. Bob
  12. Village, I very much doubt Mushroom will be offering such advice. She may well offer a mug of tea, some home made cake and give you some fresh free range eggs if you were to drop in some wood for her stove. Bob
  13. Best idea, I read a study by engineering students into bore wear on cold engines. I dont remember the exact figures but they force fed an engine cold water and after about ten hours they stripped it. The engine had bore wear in this short period of running equivalent too hundreds of thousands of miles . Most of the wear an engine sees is through cold running so for short runs a block warmer is a no brainer. We have one that runs on diesel in an old disco and its brilliant on cold mornings, instant heater and demister Bob
  14. The little fella on the turfor handle is the one that got it stuck Jon.
  15. Post up your buried motors or kit, dont be shy One buried tracked chipper. Turfor saved the day
  16. I have never thought about chain size because there are always piles of it in the yard to butcher up. I would use a chain that takes a 16mm bolt through the link on a small machine ( 6 ton or under) and a chain that takes a 20mm bolt on a bigger machine. Sandwich the chain with two decent thick washers and fit the track plates between the two nuts so the chain can swivel around on the bolt . This size chain gives an upstand of 2" There is an old set of tracks with chains on at my other yard , I will take a picture of them when they surface. Bob
  17. Have a squint at the bible, there is a bit more to it than the pik@y stripes and flashing lights. Most of it is common sense but the last thing you need when working roadside is to be caught for being non compliant. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/203669/traffic-signs-manual-chapter-08-part-01.pdf Bob
  18. Bolt a piece of big chain widthways across every fourth track plate, its an easy job with a mag drill and will make a huge difference, you only need a hole each end . It kept us from skating off down steep motorway banks , just unbolt them when your finished. Bob
  19. You only need one Jon , you dont need to put that many in stock. Bob
  20. I dont believe in a generic rate for labour or skills, how can a workshy kid that spends all day hiding behind a bush while he texts his mates be of the same value as someone who gets stuck in and canes it. We had a long line of tall conifers at the back of a site and decided to strip them out, chip all the arisings and fell the sticks later. There was dozens of them, one climber started one end another climber the other. These were the same basic tree but one climber was getting through three or four of these trees to the other climbers one. Bob
  21. Transit timing chain let go, not a noisy one either Did not have time to mess about so stuck in a second hand engine and box. Just snapped, cant see a reason for it because nothing is siezed. Pilot bearing had chewed up the input shaft of the gearbox, its the second one we have had like this. Worth changing when you do a clutch.
  22. Spot on Joe you cant teach intelligence. I also know a couple of extremely wealthy property developers that can barely read or write. It has not stopped them becoming astute businessmen. Bob
  23. I will see what I can find, it was before the days of the Ipad and dumping all the pictures onto photobucket but there must be a snap of it somewhere. Bob
  24. [quote name=No offence meant chap.[/quote] None taken eggs I personally feel we short change the kids that are not the academic sort, many of these kids would be better off channeled into a trade at an early age long before they leave school. Perhaps identify them and get them into college learning practical skills rather than leave them festering in the education system where they become disruptive. The employment rules and regs also need a tweek to allow the younger ones into the construction industry earlier, this crap of being eighteen before being allowed on a site is nonsense, by eighteen most kids have got two years of hairbrained further education courses under their belt with the associated dossers mindset firmly in place. Bob
  25. Steady on eggs, like many that advertise here we are just looking for guys on away jobs for a few weeks here and there. Our regular guys hate the travel and working away so I try to get local guys as and when. To date they have all been grateful for the work which makes it a win win situation. The only thing we cant seem to find are decent machine drivers with a forestry background, very thin on the ground. No shortage of normal machine drivers though. Bob
