  6. A friend of mine purchased a lump of land off a farmer that backed onto some houses. He did nothing with it but as soon as a house along there came up on the market he pounced on it. He took the fence down and had himself a farm, most farmers will sell a small piece of land if there is cash waved under their nose and your activities are of no consequence to them. Bob
  7. I bit the bullet a while ago and invested in the original Ford only diagnostic set up complete with a toughbook lap top loaded with the autodata manuals. Its been a godsend being able to do your own key programming, pump/injector changes/coding and run the full check program on the trucks. For this reason alone I am slowly moving over to Fords on anything under 3500kg. At between £60 and £120 a visit for the diagnostic guy to come out let alone the wait and downtime , this lot has paid for itself time and again. The extra lead on top is the oddball one for the Ranger
  8. My take on this is two pronged, firstly is the fuel. Red for agri/forestry/horticulture which in my eyes is clear cut. Second up is the registration class, a mog or tractor running the same rules on fuel duty imho cant just switch fuel to circumnavigate registering as an HGV. Its one thing or another.   9. There`s seven phones on the account and two Ipads, none of them ever go over their quota of gigergiblets or call allowance. I think the phones are about £35 per month and the Ipads £20 , thats with vodafone. Last time I went in there for an upgrade one of the security questions was " wamaf yaban " anyone? Bob

HMRC applies the following definitions of agriculture, horticulture and forestry: Agriculture - the science and art of cultivating the soil, growing and gathering in crops, and rearing of livestock. Horticulture - the science and art of cultivating or managing gardens, including the growing of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Forestry - the science and art of forming and cultivating forests and the management of growing timber. Its not how it reads so out of curiosity I will ask the question at HMRC and see what they come back with, as Catweazle points out there may well be a precedence already set. 8.20 reads or "managing gardens" , nothing in there defining the difference between commercial or domestic.   13. This is the bit I dont understand, in the exemption 8.3 it says rebated fuel can be used in a tractor for the use of agriculture forestry and horticulture.   15. The ranger is better on fuel by a whisker, off road much the same. The Ranger is not as busy under the bonnet and is easier to work on, the Mitzy is cheap on spares and there is a lot more kicking about in the way of second hand spares because of its affiliation with the Shogun. Bob
  16. The only thing I would say about the Mazda/Ranger thing is the diagnostics and spares, although mechanically the same Ford have their own diagnostic set up in place on the Ranger. If it needs plugging in there are a lot more garages about for Ford than for the Mazda. The same for the spares, Ford wont recognise the Mazda chassis numbers for spares. Other than that its the same. Bob

  18. We run both, the Mitz is very carlike and comfy but a tad undergeared. The Ranger is a bit more trucklike and has a better engine.If its just you and your tools go for the L200 , if it needs to tow all day go with the Ranger. Bob

Chris There is a small stream running through my land that`s about three quarters of a mile long, into along its route are various gulley`s and pipes from the road to deal with rainwater that are highways maintained. The EA used to keep this stream clear but that duty is now mine up to where it leaves my property and goes under a culvert in the road, the other side of the road becomes another landowners responsibility. As far as I am aware I get charged to clear it if I fail to do so or if backing up of the stream on my section causes problems for others upstream. Bob

  22. Sub base for sure, I was lucky in that when they did some major construction work in Guildford I managed to get the chalk from it. I dozed out hundreds of loads of chalk then topped it with off with road planings as and when they were available. Ninety percent of the planings turned up between midnight and three am in the morning when they were planing off A roads /motorways. The crap loads came during the day with loads of rubbish and breakout material from local patch up work, you need to make sure you dont get to much of this Turn around is really important to these guys so you need to make sure they can get in, tip and get straight out. The clocks ticking for them to get back. Bob

  24. The last person I know that tried to do this the above board way had to cough up just north of 12k by the time all concerned had a piece of the pie. It included costs for environmental studies, easements,legals,council app, highways and some ridiculous charge from an approved and crazily over insured hole in the road gang to install and tarmac the entrance. Also an eighteen month bun fight with the parish council who wanted to put the boot in. Just do it. Bob
