Mpg sounds good enough for my needs, do you know what it will leagally tow though? I can easily check when i go and look at it, but its nice to be prepared. Checking for rust is standard procedure for me as im a land rover man!

I finaly got these 2 lumps into th e barn today, they are about 3 meters long by about 50 cm diameter oak. I am planning on buying an alaskan mill and milling them up with the view to getting 2inch boards and planks suitable for making benches. Whats the best way of going about it? Thanks.

When i work for my mate doing generator/acoustic instalations(about 1 day a week on average) we go all over the place, tommorow we are going from hertford to warrington, about a 400mile round trip for hopefully 2 hours on site,, we have been working in redhill for a month, about 2 hours each way, that seems to be about average.

One we did a couple of years ago, half brick, rough cut cladding, reclaimed doors and windows, tiled roof, pot bellied stove and built in log store. Oh and a rabbit proofed veg garden in front.

Thanks very much for the pm, lots to look into there, as i said above the budget has been increased to 6ish k, so a bit better. The yanmar we have at the moment has impressed me no end, i will post some pics tommorow of what i have been doing with it.

Iv seen that companys website, thanks. I think our new plan is to get this months jobs done with the hire machine which should let us increase the budget to 6k or so, then gather all the funds into 1 acount (or envelope!!so that i can move quickly when i see one.

We have a a p6e, we have had it 10 years now, its had 2 sets of bearings and a couple of sets of lights, nothing else. We have moved a mini digger with it a couple of times and the last time we had it on a weighbridge it was 1.4 ton!! I dread to think how many thousands of tons of stuff we have moved eith it over the years, very tough, wouldnt be without it!

How often do we hire one? Too often, maybe one week a month, we currently have one booked for a months hire. Im sure if we owned one we would use it even more, i can think of several upcoming or just done jobs that we could use one on but it wouldnt be worth hireing one for.

I do like the takeuchis, have seen your ones on the arb diggers thread. I learnt to dig with a peljob when i was 6! What you say about the all the big ones being similar seems to be what iv read on other threads. If we cant get one for our budget we will keep hireing, wont be the end of the world but just seems like money down the drain. Thanks.

We are looking to buy a 1.5 ton digger, we have a budget of about 4k, i know this is bottom end but so was all the rest of our machinery and we havnt done too bad so far.so: Does anyone in the south east have one for sale? How many hours would be considered too high? What do people think of various makes? From reading on hear jcbs are comsidered underpowered, everything else seems well regarded? We have hired jcbs, kubotas, and tachouchis(spelling?), and have a yanmar on hire at the moment, all have seemed perfectly good to me. Thanks, william.

Thanks for the offer but we have hired a normal 1.5 tonne for a month, wont be as good for hedgeing work but we have a lot of fencing and digging to do with it as well.

Iv got a portek logmaster, it cost about a hundred quid and i think its brilliant, really speeds up cutting logs and its easier on the back, as you dont have to bend over or even hold the weight of the saw.

I had the 16inch bar from my 390 on mine for a couple of hours as the 390 had borrrowed the 461s 18 inch, id stick with the 18 as the 16 felt no quicker.

Adding new stuff to my pile for next year, there are about another 3 loads this size to come from that job and what i have left for this year.

I have bacho 1/4, 3/8and half inch drive socket sets, very good stuff and can be very well priced when on offer.

I dont remember taking any crossmembers off my n reg hilux when i changed the front prop, and i was very un mechanical back then, so probably wouldnt have done it if you had to take anything else off.

Thats a great bit of kit. I use a 5ft hi lift, including on concrete posts, choke a sling round the post, stand the base of the jake on a bit or sleeper to get a bit of extra hieght and crank away. The jack will tilt forward but when you have jacked it about 2rds of the way up pull on the post of the jack to bring it back vertical and the post should pop out.

I like that snatch block, up until a few weeks ago i couldnt work out why all the tirfors seemed to have such low capacitys, then i realised they are rated as lifting devices:blushing:

Top job, my dad used to have 2 that size years ago, only paid 50 quid for the pair, we pulled over an ash tree with a 5 ft diameter poplar laying in it with one, great bits of kit. The pair of them got lost in a fire a few years ago thou.
