    Rotovators

i did try a husky local husky dealer tried selling me one when i went in for a new saw!! he saw my camon c10 rotovator on the back of my pick up & offered the husky rotovator as a demo it was not a bad machine & from what i can remeber it was not too bad a price! but what i can tell you & gurantee it is that my c10 is now 12 years old i`v had it the last 10 years i got it off another landscaper who had used it for 2 years turfing new build housing estates it had been well used but well looked after in the last 10 years it has rotovated tens of thousands of sq meters ready for turfing & has only just started giving a little grief the list goes; broken deadmans handle, clutch is stuck in drive so it is all or nowt! blades are well worn (there still the orignials) & the 10 horse honda is starting to feel like it is losing compression the starter rope is really easy to pull but still starts no problem & runs fine i just rotovated & turfed 40 sq meters this morning with it! in the last ten years of abuse (used hard & put away wet) by myself & the reprebates i call workmates it has never had a spanner on it thats probs why it is like it is now!!!! i dont know weather to put it right or just go buy another new one!!!! if i do buy new i wont be buying the husky it will be another c10 they really do take the abuse! i had a c8 prior to getting the c10 the 10 gets the job done a lot quicker than the 8 but is sometimes a little hard to get into back gardens down narrow paths which the 8 would sail down un hindered its like buying any new kit the final decision boils down to what do you think is right for you i got a c8 cos thats what i had been hiring & liked the way they performed & i had never had one break down & thought it the best decision for me!!! why not try hiring a husky & see how you like it? or do a comparison test hire one of each & try them side by side expensive i know but would determine which you prefer!
  5. theres no reason for just elm or beech i supply a guy with a pizza oven & all he asks for is dry got to be dry hardwood species dosent matter as said above the pizza is in there for less than a minute!
  6. i got some kiln dried logs earlier this year to fill out my last orders of the winter the kiln dried was 15%mc on the outside & 35%mc on the inside it bunt ok but did not throw out much heat i`m just processing a larger volume of timber this year (locally sourced) & air drying as i always have so i dont run out again next year!! i was not impressed with the quality of the bought in kiln dried logs so i will not be buying them in again!!! if i run out this year i will just have to think of another way round the problem!!!
  7. i have dug through a `couple` (cough 20 ish? cough) over the years all have been very shallow & i have always stuck to my guns! i have always taken lots of photos & photographed the tape from surface to the cable! and i have never parted with a penny its not a fibre optic cable but if you do ever dig through a fiber-optic cable never look down the end of the cable as it can affect your eye sight & has the possibility of making you blind! the engineers can also repair fiber optic cables & dont have to re run the whole lenght! a few years ago i cut off a whole village by digging through a large bundle of fiber optic cables in my defence i was digging in a friends field & the cables should not have been there at all they were not on any plans or deeds for the land! and they should have been more than 6 inches below ground! i did not have to pay this time either!
  8. dont hold me to this but i was told the diffs will swap from the terrano axle to the cabstar axle but i never tried it!
  9. there great little trucks i have had one (still got it buried at back of yard) & i loved it they will get in any driveway with no problem mine was an old f23 model with the 2.5 flat diesel engine & single rear wheels! the truck was not a rocket ship truth told they get a little hot if they are pushed they like 50-60mph on the motorway so not a distance truck but great locally it had a payload of 1.7ton legally but would carry more a LOT more with out any trouble or looking over loaded ( i poped a couple of engines in mine due to the amount of weight & abuse it got in & out of quarries & tips all day every day) they do spin a bit in mud but i never got mine stuck so bad it could not get its self out ( i just used to put the tipper body up to get some weight over the back axle) they are expensive on genuine parts & the old ones do rot! all in all i rate them very highly & would have another tomorrow!!!
  10. most of our recycleable rubish that is not worth a great monetry value to the local council is shipped out to an asian country when it lands there they either land fill it or burn it!! but that is classed as recycled posting the problem to the other side of the world is not a soloution! save burning fossil fuel to get it there & burn it in our power stations & filter the gases that are emitted we have the technology!!! why wont they do it is it something to do with euro emisions????
  11. good old youtube has come up trumps with a design for you! looks time consuming but better than throwing away a good heat source if you have enough spare time!!!
  12. i have had several visits from the council due to jealous neighbours not liking me getting on in life!!!! the deffiniation of running a business from home is do you have customers turning up to your home address for you to ply your trade which basically means do your customers bring there trees round to your house to have them cut if you do you will need planning permission for business use or if you do what you say you do in your orignial post even if you have your work mate subby etc turning up on a morning storing servicing equipment tools van chipper etc then your all above board! the first visit the council man tried to trip me up on why i had a dispatch van, a cabstar, a hilux & a unimog on my front drive & garden in a quite cul-de-sac but once he reliased i was cool with not parking the vans or mog on the drive & that in future i would always park them on the street outside as that is a perfectly legal place to park them as all were taxed etc he decided the drive & garden was fine for the parking of vehicles all equipment was stored out of sight from the public road i.e in my garage shed or back garden that was fine i did not have customers calling round for me to do work for them there & then so that was fine on the second 2 visits he just pulled up outside came in for a coffee & a chat about motocross & enduro racing! i have never heard from them again!
  13. phenolic faced plywood is also known as buffalo board!!!
  14. as hodge says good to see some real people i was offered a 2ft dia oak that was wind blown i got there the guy said here it is i only want 500 quid for it! the trunk had a good bit of rot in it so it was only fit for fire wood! as cut split logs there was at a push £500 mabey less!
  15. had same my self last week john!! TWICE! cutting up a couple of big wind blown beech, there was a good 8-10 ton stacked up & an old guy said for me not to worry he would go home & get his big trailer to take it all away for me, free of charge!!! normally i tell the scroungers to go away in a very un-polite manner but this old guy seemed alright so i politely explained that the wood was not avaliable for free but if he wanted to go get his trailer we could come to an agreeable price where he got a trailer load or 2 of cheap wood to take home for his fire next winter! he told me i was a "robbing *$#$$* and a bloody *$£**" and i should be bloody hung for daylight robbery i did not even mention how much i wanted for the wood? then half hour later a woman about in her forties came over & asked if she could have some wood, she said her husband had a lorry with a crane on it so he could collect it no problem! i said that she could have some wood & that i would be wanting £35 per ton she seemed ok with this price & then said so how much would the whole pile be i said 300 quid so also called me a *$#$$* & that i was a *$£**" and stormed off shouting more abuse at me! i think i will go back to telling them where to go in future! its quicker & a lot less hassle! & i only get called half as many names!
  16. tele handler!! for a skidsteer the smaller more easily transported to site machines like the 4, 5, 6, series are a tad light for my liking & tend to be driven about on only the front wheels when moving a big log or a good grab full of smaller logs! i had the smaller machines then i got a 743 which led to a massey 8925 which is a small telehandler really but has done everything plus alot more that we have needed!!!!
  17. hi jon you can either register it as an agric or as limited use both have free road tax & are mot exempt you can run on red for forestry & agric use my hilux is on limited use & is tax & mot exempt & can legally be run on red as for ALL the paper work filling in the taxation class on the log book & taking it in to your local dvla office really is a big chore!! (dont go to local office at start of month as there will be BIG queues) have swapped the tax class on a few vehicles to limited use & never had a problem swaping to agric you somtimes have to let vosa see what has been done to the truck to make it an agric machine for my landy that was agric registered i removed the rear tub & put a sprayer on the back! job done! the sprayer was on a quick mount / detach so i would normally run round with just a bare rear chassis! which was still legal as long as it was being used for agric use!
  18. my log store sales have dropped right off in last 4 weeks!!! they normally start really moving in end of august & through the winter have a few odd sales through the summer to people who have just had a stove fitted! charge what they are worth i normally sell more logs stores to customers that have called into the yard to collect logs & see a log store or to people who have bought ones friends they look round em remark on the quality & then ask how much some a suprised at how cheap they are some are horrified at how i dare ask so much for them & make me a lot lower offer which i politly decline to accept! i also do a special starter pack deal log store logs kindling fire lighters etc makes em think there getting a good deal i just still charge exactly the same as what i would have charged for the log store & logs & chuck in a bag or 2 of kindling & a pack of fire lighters foc! they look a good quality product dont under sell them your better making a good profit than selling them with a tiny margin!
  19. ouch!! good luck with finding a good engine! i ended up buying another mog when i needed an engine for mine & breaking it it took time but got some good money back from the parts i sold so ended up not being that expensive! but still was an inconvience!
  20. cutting down a tree or cutting up a windblow tree either way he was doing something well beyond his limits! the proof is in the article he was killed doing it! he should not have been there & should not of been undertaking the task which was above his level of experience! plus the legality of it!
  21. its called the darwin theory, evolution by natural selection. according to society today theres no such thing as an accident someone somewhere has to be held accountable for whats happened!! for example the signs the police use at an road traffic accident used to say SLOW POLICE ACCIDENT now they say SLOW POLICE INCIDENT thus meaning theres been an accident & somebody has to cop the blame cos "where theres blame theres a claim!!" its just how it is! the media will paint a picture of a poor old man scavanaging for firewood cos the gas price has gone up again it makes a good story & gets peoples attentions about other economic news! & makes the gas sellers look bad for indirectly killing a poor old man by over charging for gas! thats the press for you there as big a scum as the thieves! the poor old kid sholud have sold his chainsaw to buy some cut & split logs or pay his gas bill not go out & put life at risk! plus he was stealing which is bad! if he had blown his & his neighbours houses up by trying to steal gas by bypassing his gas meter he would have been classed as a thief & an idiot for endangering life! i see cutting a tree down in the park without permission or the right know how as the same as bypassing a gas meter in a house with out permission or the right know how! both are stupid & wrong! oh yeah and illegal!
  22. if your offended by my comments thats fine by me! just saying it how it is! theres nothing wrong with telling the truth! some people do not like to hear the truth! my main concern with the gentleman in questions actions was what if the tree had landed on somebody`s child who was just playing in the wood at the side of the park???????? yes somebody any body with a chainsaw in a public place cutting down / up trees / tree waste with no quals no insurance no risk assement no permission is breaking the law & putting life at risk NO WAY would any local council say to some old boy yeah you just go take as much wood as you like from the local park!!! no sorry he was stealing & putting life at risk (which he did prove unfortunatly for him) just lucky there was not somebodys small child stood under the tree when it fell!!!! hope you dont find that distastefull!
