  1. hi chaps, i'm looking to get some tough trousers to wear over winter and can't find any that i fit into. i'm a 41" waist and when i buy 42" trousers i can't fit into the legs as they are too skinny. ones i just bought from ebay were 11 1/2" from the crotch to the edge of the trouser when laid flat and i need 14" at least as the girth of the top of my leg is just over 27". where do most tradesmen with muscular legs get their work trousers? any brands would be great info please. also does anyone else have the same problem as me??? or have i just got big legs? any help appreciated fellas.
  2. big j, i'm curious as to why timber of that size is of less quality over a smaller diameter tree? or is it down to the amount of branches? 10 years ago when i was still a young joiner we were working with a batch of older growth doug fir from either british columbia or canada and the stability of it was very very good, i found out that they had to be over 60" to give nice stability (according the the old guy in the shop) and it was not often found even then, there's probably none left now.
  3. how did everyone else get on with the danish oil??? personally i have found it a great product to use and i don't think i'll be using anything else from now on...
  4. the red oak group are not durable hence why all durable oaks are in the white side of the genus. you can see the two groups here. The Wood Database if it's a good stem then i think it should be put to use but just not outside. it can be used for furniture, floorboards, interior doors, kitchens, skirting, architrave, shelving and anything else you can think of that won't expose it to the elements.
  5. can i have some advice about transplanting a tree please. we've a small oak in the middle of the lawn about 4' tall and about 7-8 years old as it kept getting mowed down when my dad was alive but he's been dead 5 years now. anyway, it's not in the right place and we've just dug a huge hole in the front garden as we've dug a bush out that was overgrown and i suggested that it go there. how big a ball need i keep on the oak to give it the best chance?
  6. just don't cut through the blocks...
  7. is that the ledge and brace method but with a frame on the door james?
  8. perhaps he thought it said "liquor" and "bondage"
  9. for some reason the leaf is on another thread. it's a red oak.
  10. sounds like a handy bit of kit. link???
  11. just because it's rustic doesn't mean it should be cheap, in my opinion it takes more skill to make a good rustic item as you are not playing with flat or parallel timber like a normal item. £350-£400 id say mate.
  12. post some pictures when still boxed, i'd like to see how you package something like that.
  13. leaf looks like an oak to me. a couple of pics in the book look similar. lea's oak quercus x leana, batrams oak quercus x heterophylla and louisiana oak quercus x ludoviciana are all similarly shaped. better pics of the bark are needed as others have said.
  14. it would turn grey anyway (or the colour of the pressure treatment) so you may as well creosote it or if you wish the preserve the natural colour you'll need to find a good timber to use. can you find any robinia or true cedar?
  15. is it coming down??? i'm interested in some of the timber if it is.
  16. that was my second choice i just thought the bark was too smooth.
  17. looks like a beech
  18. i think that's the idea. stunning work indeed.
  19. it looks like i have a new direction for my business. thanks to a thread started by tom D, http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/100173-idea-wood-turners.html whom i made two pars of beautifull indian clubs i wil now (during the winter months at least) be making indian clubs and persian meels supplying the retailer of a website. here are some i've already done. .
  20. just a little update, i have had two responses from the customer as i said two weeks ago and in my responses to those letters i have countered any point they tried to say was my fault by stating the facts which are unavoidable as they are all in writing and can not be altered. they need to respond by the 1st of november. one thing that could go against them is the fact that the letters are very poorly written and it does not look like he's read through what he's written as he has sometimes put in words where they are not needed and has even put the wrong word in completely such as "delved" rather than "delivered" which is just daft... they have also tried to manipulate the facts (which i can prove) so it could blow up in their face if a judge reads some of this gibberish.
  21. i take it by the lack of a flood of responses no one knows then.
  22. my main hobby is tenpin bowling. there are a few shots of me on my youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClhyzKkPsrQDwzffHgCzBBA/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0 . [ame] [/ame]
  23. i wonder if it's above a sinkhole???
  24. is there any chance it could be an old spring? if not then is it near the water table?
  25. i gave archery a go this year but i've not got the time to spend on it really. i think i only went a dozen times over the whole year. annoying really as i was pretty good, got my first two colours within about a month so ended up shooting 120 feet and i was still getting blues reds and golds but i haven't been for a while as work took over.
