  1. why must everyone burn everything. i would be interested in the largest bits you have for turning. any available?
  2. those species i've mentioned are not the limitation of what i'm after. i will be interested in anything that dries hard and is hardwearing... hornbeam, whitebeam, hawthorn, cherry, plum, holly, ash, sycamore, mulberry, holm oak, sweet chestnut or anything really hard. no softwoods please.
  3. hi all, i'm looking for some old dry lumps of apple, eucalyptus, elm, oak or beech. they need to be about 7-8" where the branch is as they will be turned into 5 3/4" skittle balls. two or three knots are ok but the theory is that the branch attachment area is used as its much harder wood. they can not be rotten. they must be solid. they must be hard. anyone with any please get in touch. 01628 666191 .
  4. can't remember if the one on countryfile was a giant sequoia but there can't be that many trees that look like that and there was a tree that had at least 4 stems feature some years ago.
  5. if your in laws are fond of the tree and it has to go then i can turn it into bowls or something to remember it by rather than just firewood it.
  6. was that the one featured on countryfile a few years ago?
  7. here are some of the items that i turned for the exhibition. there was loads more than that as it was a month long exhibition but by the time we got there (3 days in) most of them had sold. .
  8. none of the wood comes with a certificate but it does come from royal grounds.
  9. not sure if you will be able to see the words crown estate on this billboard but they printed this when i had an exhibition in the savill building. .
  10. its not burrs but i can get you wood from the crown estate if you like?
  11. the craftsmanship is excellent i must say. the design is not my style but that's just me. i do however like the idea for the handles.
  12. yep, whitebeam. is it coming down? i'll be interested in the timber if it is.
  13. how about making a wire cage type thing that could be loaded and unloaded possibly with a forklift. that way you could easily load the cage outside and simply slide it in.
  14. sorry mate but if he's mush inside then there is nothing you can do in my opinion except carve a copy in a rot resistant wood.
  15. looks like a crinodendron spp. chilean lantern tree.
  16. sutton timber are doing it for £1200-£1400 for 1" and 2" respectively.
  17. i was going to say, it's one sizes fits all my friend:lol::lol: i presume you mean the sling shot? i would have thought a 1/2" surgical tube would be ok?
  18. what sort of sizes are you after? i have some big slabs of sycamore if you are interested? 24" x 5"-5 1/2" x 60" around 8 years dry.
  19. i think i read somewhere that that can happen on your bog standard english elm. no rhyme or reason as to why i don't think.
  20. don't you usually cut in sections to prevent that sort of thing happening???
  21. can't view the page.
  22. is there not a willow species that has green twigs like that?
  23. my point is that these are dead straight and a better quality milling log than some so i feel that they should be milled. i know the british furniture industry has gone to pot and if i had enough space to make my own then i'll be asking for as much english wood as i can. i simply feel that good quality logs should be used for milling and log the crap looking ones.
  24. so basically if you hit that tree with a hammer and it's hard you can mill it?
  25. beech is a excellent timber for joinery. why does everyone log it???
