  1. sizes??? very unusual look to it, was it a dead tree?
  2. the length does not matter as you say it's 5' and that'll do fine, they will be cut down when dry anyway. they are destined to be table skittles for this game. Northamptonshire Skittles Table
  3. i'd be interested in some 3" squares. where are you?
  4. you could get a hell of an education from me mate...
  5. yes mick, you've been calling calling cherry laurel rhody. cherry laurel is usually white to cream whereas the rhody i've turned is straw yellow. rhody shrink really badly...
  6. would it not last longer if a suitable hardwood is used??? flatbeds always used to be planked in keruing but there are loads of other rock hard timbers used for the same purpose. woods like ekki, cumaru, ipe, massaranduba, purpleheart and jarrah would be great i would have thought???
  7. cedar is great for using outside but make sure your roof timbers are bulky as it splits in half fairly easily. you should be able to use it straight away.
  8. it's laburnum mick. a fabulous timber.
  9. these guys are your local club and i'm sure you will meet many local turners in your area. Hampshire Woodturners Association | Woodturning news and information from HWA if you want to come up to J7 of the M4 i'll happily tell you what's what in the woodturning world.
  10. well that's different than "just" isn't it. 1 year should be fine for drying 1" but i would be inclined to leave it in the house to acclimatise it as much as you can to it's final surroundings. once it's been there for 2-3 months then give it a good sand and a couple of coats of danish oil a week apart and it'll look great...
  11. phil you taunting bugger. ok i'll take it...
  12. here he is again. . [ame] [/ame]
  13. g'day all. i've just been watching loads of youtube vids on people like bill bailey and billy connolly. i thought it would be a good idea to put videos on here so that we can all piss ourselves laughing at some of the funniest people around. feel free to add what you like. enjoy... . [ame] [/ame]
  14. what do you mean???
  15. has no one got any then???
  16. wicked, any chance of a video of the process?
  17. can you get a close up of the grain? i believe that endgrain hornbeam was also used.
  18. by the way, i broke my mums fence hence why i thought i should see if i can find anyone to fix it.
  19. very funny fellas... i don't scrounge every nice bit of wood that i see y'know... it's a pity that it's already been split as i may have been interested if it was in large lumps but if it's already firewood sizes then i can't do much with it.
  20. hi will, i've got one or two finished from that log and i'll put them on this thread when i upload them from the camera. paul, i just like turning it into bowls as the wood looks very attractive in my opinion...
  21. hi all, catalpa has become one of my favorite timbers and i'd like to point out anyone felling one 12" and up that i'm interested in the timber for turning into bowls. they look great once turned and it's better than it going on the fire as it doesn't last long.
  22. hi all, mum is in the throws of doing hose renovations and the front fence is a bit rubbish so could do with replacing, can anyone help??? we live right next to J7 of the M4. there are currently 7x 4" fence posts and 6x 2 1/2' - 3' high panels in place and they are rotting nicely. if anyone can help please get me with a pm or the number is on the website.
  23. regardless as to what it is, if you've taken it out or removed any wood from it i'd like the timber... i'd like some of the cypress arizonica too please...
  24. it's good for turning blanks clive, you get some stunning grain if bits from the base of the tree or under branches.
  25. if you drop any catalpas clive then i'd like the wood...
