  4. Yes, we still get the 'Sacre Bleu' when the get in what they think is the passenger side of our French plated right hand drive car... I suspect they may not follow English too well, let alone Jonspeak:biggrin: N

    Battery

Good decision, would always be trying to charge no matter & the battery would probably only let you down when you needed it. Incidentally those Optima batteries are good but for a price N

    Battery

Hi again, Id be surprised if the resting voltage was over 13.0 volts, its probably around 12.4 - 12.8 It may reach a higher voltage directly after charging but will drop back fairly quickly. Your alternator or charger should output around 14.0 - 14.6 V which is the Absorption charge for the battery. It will initially bulk charge the battery to that voltage at the highest current it can output, then hold the voltage steady & reduce the current to charge to its full capacity, the battery will gas slightly at this voltgae hence the vent holes in the cell tops. Periodically you need to do an equalising charge which will reduce the effects of sulphation and bring the battery to its best condition. hope this helps N

Ive managed nearly two days without looking at this thread, Im trying not to look... but that does not help! Nice one N
  8. Hi Could you balance one of these on your tete? [ame] [/ame] Or try the Fenix ones N

Hi, If a 12V lead/acid battery goes below 10.5 volts then its usually scrap. No matter how much you try & charge it it wont hold charge because some or all of the cells will be defective. If you have a CTek or similar charger then you may be able to do a restoration charge &/or charge to 15 Volts ( or the voltage prescribed for an equaliser can be upto 15.6 V ) where each cell will gas so loosen tops & check the water level, top up afterwards. If you have a voltmeter, measure the terminal voltage, once it reaches 15V (or equalising voltage) switch to a lower current setting so it dosnt gas excessively & gas for around 3-4 hours @ the equaliasing voltage. What this will do is expose fresh lead so it re-vitalises the battery If that dosnt work then change it. N
  10. My tyres last a lot longer on the roads here which tend to be straighter & smoother with less stop starts. However, as stated the driving wheels will always wear quicker & it depends how much right foot you use in accelerating & braking. A large, high torque engine will also accelerate wear. The front tyres of our Saab 93 last around 35-40K Kms & rears about 2-3 times that - tyres are 225*17"*45*94w N
  11. Or waiting for an age for the cassette tape to load the programe? quite enjoyed the odd frame of 'space invaders' now and again N
  12. Hi I must admit, I have the greatest respect for what you have embarked upon & wish you every success - we too are in the process of renovating an old French farmhouse whlst living in a sustainable manner producing a lot of our own fruit & vegatables, solar water heating etc. Yes, I suspect it wont make you rich, but I gain imesnse satisfaction in doing what we do, so long as you have enough to get by thats what matters - theres no pockets on a shroud! good luck N
  13. Bonsoir a tous Welcome to all, theres a load of good people here & a wealth of information N
  14. All, If you look at the statistics all of this is based upon then youve more chance of getting run down by a bus. I enjoy a drink - I dont like excess & yes, I do abstain for a couple of days a week However, I dont like being told by some nanny state what I should and shouldn't do. Some years ago I was asked by my GP how many units do you drink? "well, firstly I drink pints of beer or glasses of wine, not 'units' & if I tell you the truth, you'll write 'liar' on my documents & if I dont you'll write 'possibly alcholoic' put down whatever you like - its all bollox anyway". Was my reply. That said, there are some definite benefit to drinking vin rouge or Whisky - I found this recently 10 Health Benefits of Whiskey | Love Live Health although they can't spell Whisky So enjoy your wine, beer, cider whatever - dont drink to excess or worry about it, you'll enjoy a good nights sleep N
  15. Yes, Our first computer was a Vic20 which I learnt to programme in basic & was actually quite a decent machine. My O/H being a teacher was mainly BBC micro based & everything I got involved with was Microsoft or Novell Netware 3.11 - I wouldnt be surprised if theres still the odd box chuntering away in a forgotten dusty cupboard. The Internet in those early days via 9600 baud modem and Windows 3 or dos was a bit tricky as it invoved editing config.sys & autoexec.bat files but it all seemed like a great adventure & a lot of the problems nowadays just diddnt exist. But its very good to keep in touch, friends, family & the daily Arbtalk fix N
  16. Hi all, Personally I consider it could present a problem. The radiation from fissle by products discharged following the explosion at Chernobyl in April 1986 contaminated a significant area, however there are a small number of peolple who have moved back into what became known as 'the dead zone' - probably too old to worry about the rad haz. Whilst the more harmful Alpha emitters tend to have relatively short half lives & thus decay quickly, what remains is unfortunately going to be around for thousands of years. Im fairly sure that border radiation monitoring should detect a load of contaminated wood & I would consider the danger is to those who cut & transport it. Should detection fail then unfortunately, some poor soul could end up burning low lavel radioactive waste. N

  20. Hi Jon, yes good thanks it does help keep the old lungs clean & clear! Wishing you a good New Year N
  21. Hi I have used Aspen or Husky Power2 (which I understand is Aspen re-branded but its slightly cheaper here) in my saws for some time now. Im always surprised by how clean the plug looks when ever I check it & it certainly avoids the unpleasant effects associated with inhaling 2 stroke mix in use - particually as Im slightly asthmatic. Therefore I have decided to use the 4 stroke Aspen in my cultivator as it is relatively new & will help keep it in good running order for the future. N
  22. Yes, I got mine from Mr FR Jones & got my O/H a silky saw too good to deal with, thanks N
  23. Hi I understand your dilemma, some new ones are a liability & manufacturers dont support their products in the way they should. I think the 3 series Husqvarnas are fairly good - I have 346 & 365 and would like a 390 - I wouldnt touch autotune saws although some love it. You can still get the 346ne in France if you google 'husqvarna 346 tronçonneuse thermique' its around 600 euros It seems like Dolmar & Echo make some strong saws which are worth considering N
  24. Hi As per Stubby although I wouldnt be surprised if theres a sprinkling of the earlier 65cc 365s still running. The latter model is 365xt without autotune. I have the 365xt its a good saw, I dont experience similar start problems to others although as posted the decomp valve is left shut. I find that 2 or 3 pulls with choke out - then once it starts to fire, choke in & it useually starts up next pull. Its a good cutter on 20" so on 18" or less it should fly. N
