  1. Just pick up a bandsaw to go along side the lathe, it's a butcher's saw but has been used for woodworking so hopefully it should be OK. Cost me nowt so I can't loose anything on it. Picture below taken from the internet, I pick mine up at the weekend. P.S. Also got the long term loan of a Kity 636 planer thicknesser from the same person
  2. Hey Jon - You gonna knock up some cabinets with your 880?
  3. Good to hear they're replacing it, hope you get a good un. Lets us know what you think of it when it's sorted.
  4. Got a piston from GHS for my 650, no more than 5 hours use and a ring cracked, large chip in one of the transfers. Finally bit the bullet and got a OEM pot and piston and alls been fine since
  5. Having had a bad experience with a couple of Chinese pot and pistons on my MS650 I would say that £300 for genuine is cheaper in the long run. If the original pot can be salvaged then an OEM piston is a no brianer considering the value of the saw.
  6. It's a bit breezy!!! Presently gusting to 49mph over 70mph predicted. Oh, and it's raining!
  7. Got a fish sit on top, great way to fish. Put a 2 horse outboard on it last summer so it probably doesn't count as a kayak any more!
  8. Some lovely work there.
  9. Glad you liked the stuff, I found it after a thread on here. Strangely the silky fix is the first thing I did with it Hard to explain to people exactly what it is/does, just get some and fix stuff!
  10. I've got the precision grinder, use it for my milling chains as it gives a perfectly even sharpen to the whole chain. Also very good for sorting chains that have been knackered for whatever reason (hit stones etc) For a quick sharpen on a short chain I find it's slower than hand filing but on long chains it's a lot faster and you get a lovely even finish.
  11. Had a Dolmar 111 on the bench today, erratic running and hard to start. Removed carb and gave it a good clean inside and out. Gauze filter was partly blocked and the inside of the metering diaphragm cover was clogged with gunk, also found a huge amount of gunk in the tank breather. Put it all back together and still the same erratic running so took it all apart again only to find a hole in the fuel line Really should have checked the obvious stuff first but cleaning the rest wouldn't have hurt it at all. Ordered the parts up, as far as I could find out it's the same as a Makita 520, hope so as that's the parts I ordered
  12. Beautiful wood Make sure you post up the finished product
  13. Thanks for the tips guys. Chippy - bought 2 record chisels off ebay this weekend, a good saving on new prices but still stretching the (non-existent) budget. Delabodge - Thanks for the tip about the green wood, managing to get a few bits of seasoned together at the moment in fact the bottom 2 pieces came off the log pile.
  14. 2 weeks ago I stopped in to see a local woodturner and happened to have a few 3" elm boards in the back of the truck that I had just milled. Mr Woodturner got really excited when he saw these and after a little negotiation I unloaded the planks and loaded up an old Coronet Major lathe plus together with lots of accessories and some basic chisels. Anyway over the last couple of weekends I've been playing with my new toys and am quite happy with the progress so far. Lots of areas to improve, particularly my sharpening and my finishing. Any tips or comment welcome, I need as much help as possible! 4 items made so far (plus a mallet for my O/H) 2 large bowls, one tea light holder and and small bowl that the side dropped off whilst I was turning it which ended up my favourite.
  15. Thanks for all the replies on this. I left my reply for a few days till I could let you know what we got and what we thought of it. As I said above, money was always a consideration but we also wanted to get something decent, so ended up getting a Ben Orford spoon knife and all I can say is wow. The build quality is excellent and it handles and cuts wonderfully. So far that's it but I think we will also be adding a flexcut or the mora 106. Thanks again
  16. Got that tractor out yet?
  17. Wet here, raining all day was very windy over night. More of the same forecast for the next few days.
  18. Know the area well, was in Chard until 3 1/2 years ago
  19. Looks lovely, what part of the country?
  20. The other half wants to do a bit of hand carving, starting off with a few spoons. Looking for advise on which knives to go for. At the moment we are looking at the Mora Spoon Carving Kit for 30 quid Mora (Frost) Spoon Carving Kit - £30.95 : Woodland Craft Supplies but open to other suggestions (that aren't going to break the bank)
  21. Excellent first day! I think this thread could become regular reading just like Silky's thread
  22. don't forget to keep the photos coming when you start work. Good luck tomorrow
  23. Excellent, looks really professional
  24. This is a perfect job for Sugru, it works really well https://sugru.com/
  25. Looking good, nice and clear. Liking the instant postage checker, living where I do it can be a pain in the butt when you try and buy something online and the website tells you to phone for delivery quote. This WILL make me more likely to buy from you.
