  1. In theory the smaller the angle, the slower the cut and the better the finish. I use granberg ripping chains in my alaskan and my lucas slabber. The finish is way better than a cross cut chain. But horses for courses. If your only making blanks finish is pretty irrelevant so stick to cheap. If you want to make boards then good finish can help. Especially on wide slabs that can't go through the thicknesser. If your only doing narrow boars and you have a thicknesser then it becomes irellevant again.

Not only the arse lickers, but the establishment themselves as well!
  3. Either is fine. Depending on the size of the deck it can be easier to get the strength by using one or two bearers/purlins as supports mid span.

On the whole we only like blowing up poor defenseless people. It's what us and the yanks are good at. These poor people don't have nukes. Surely people don't actually believe we need these as a deterent. It Woukd be Interesting to look at who profits from these deals!
  5. Tite bond 2 fir wood. 2 part epoxy for some other stuff and gorilla expanding glue for everything else.
  6. Thsnks for the comments. Working with a friend on this one. Bit of a hospital job, but will keep the thread posted with the next stage.
  7. Oh well. I'm not going to argue the point. I'll just continue sunning myself in sunny majorca. And when I return to the UK I will continue to do a quality job with the least expenses and man hours possible because that is the soundest way to run my business for myself and the customer.
  8. Best to use the chain supplied with the saw.when it wears out buy a new one the same. Ask your work colleagues about the benefits of using a long Weight to aid balancing the falling tree.
  9. Strange question! If you charge £1000 for a job and spend £400 you make more money than if you spent £500. Also over spec means more labour costs. Client isn't usually interested in spec. Just finished product and price. I charge less and make more than the over spec man.
  10. Well said But over specking eats the profit.
  11. Thought I'd update this thread with some of the first parts finished from this tree. Here's some pics of the oak trusses and purlins in. Still to come one more fake oak truss and an oak porch. Pictures not great but will update when scaffold etc is out of the way. Hopefully it's nice for people to see what these trees can be turned into and why we shouldn't rush to firewood them. More oak always required.
  12. I reckon most of you guys over spec your decking support. Average rule of thumb is A joist needs to be 1" per 2 foot of span plus 1". So 10 ft span needs 6x2 joists. 20 ft span needs 6x2 plus 1 support purlin mid span. So decking which comes 20 ft or 6m from wall I would use 6x2 joist with a 4 X2 wall plate fixed to wall, support mid span either post or purlin and wall or support at far end. 18 or 20mm boards need 400 centres and 22 abd 25mm boards need 600 centres. Build quite a lot 8m diameter round yurt floors for school classrooms (not decking but ply and carpet or hardwood) and domestic decks. 8m yurt floors I use 6x2 purlins at 2m centres with supports every 3m max with 4 x 2 as top joists. Could use bigger purlins and loose mid supports but this brings it off the ground too high.
  13. I may be interested and also in the cedar depending on size. Will consider an offer and pm you. Hard to offer on walnut without seeing an end grain cut at the root plate though.
  14. I just offered 1.50 so reckon I've pinched ut from you all. Suckers
  15. What size log do you need?

Looks good but seems like a lot of posts to me. How far apart are they?
  17. Looks good j. Will be interested to see an update photo in a year to see how it reacts to seasoning once laid Have considered doing this for customers in the past but always resisted.
  18. I'll put a link up for you later when I'm near my laptop.
  19. Are you asking how much you should pay or how much you could sell it for.? What is it sat on top of it?
  20. Spuds/apples etc are easy. Used to make the chamber from 110mm pipe and the barrel from 40mm. Nice and long. Sharpen the end of the barrel and just push the spud onto it like a kids toy spud gun. Use a stick to shove it down. And fire. Spud nicely lubes the barrel on the way in.
  21. Made several of these over the years but usually run them on hairspray.
  22. I have a few 051s that I use with a 24" mill and a 30" bar. Pulls lovely in a 22 "oak although I never use it as it's hard work Compared to my lucas mill.
  23. Saw this one today and it reminded me of this thread.
  24. Looks like a 2 or max 3 tonne load to me. Don't think it's worth me driving there for the leftovers. If you want it mate you take it but if you don't let me know and I'll pop down for it.
