  1. I do It. It's a big investment to earn money but you can earn some. Think you would be lucky to work full time doing it but there is work out there. I do one or two days a week in season and the odd day off season. But I primarily bought the mill to cut my own wood for framing and barn building etc which is what I do most of the rest of the time. I think if your talking about purely contract milling it will hake a while to get enough business to cover yourinvestment and running costs. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  2. 8k for some green oak? Can't really understand how they could only get one slab out of it either. Could of at least free handed it in half and got two. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. I look forward to the pictures then Steve. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. Mill them as long as you can. 2m is a little short for My liking. Through and through slabs is good for walnut as the timber is very stable compared to other species. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  5. Sequoia is a good choice for raised beds isn't it? Rated as moderately to very durable depending where it's grown. If I were making the beds I would use Sequoia with no treatment and expect it to last upwards of 15 years. Maybe I'm wrong but I reckon if Sequoia is at hand then it's a good choice. 6. Completely agree really but there cheap and lowc tech for occasional use. I never alaskan mill anymore but face a day of it tomorrow. Hopefully the walnut will be worth it. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  7. Nice. But you need an alaskan mill to cut your own oak rafters. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app

  10. Ms200 is a back handle saw. 200t is a top handle saw I think that's the only real difference. If yours has a top handle then it's a 200t Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app

  14. Feather edge is fine if you fit it correctly. I mill and clad a lot of buildings in Feather and don't have a problem. I would go 3x2 then breathable membrane then baton down stud then Feather edge in cedar larch or Douglas Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  15. Most of the committee members of the local groups are volunteers. I know two of the guys on our local group. One is a town planner and one works for the nfu. This is why it can sometimes take an age to get a decision as they don't meet that often. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app

  20. It's pointless coming back at you with anything else. You obviously already decided that you know the ins and outs or every other trade but tell me I just wouldn't understand because I'm not worthy because I don't climb for a living. Could say the same thing my self but choose to accept that all work has its challenges. And lots of work is equally as hard as other work. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  21. I bow down to your superior abilities. Maybe one day I could scale to the heights of someone so hard working and far more important than lowly other trades. I consider my self told and far more humble when it comes to my own abilities. Sent from my SM-G920F using Arbtalk mobile app
  22. Intresesting thread. It was said earlier that a lot of people think they work harder than others and some on this thread are definitely guilty of that. Brickwork can be exhausting it can also be relatively easy. In general I think people should have respect for other people's trades. The fittest climber would struggle against an experienced builder on site and vice versa. We get used to what we do and develop the muscles we need. I did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, although I don't do much of it now, I spent the last few weeks building a retaining wall from dense concrete blocks, on quite a steep hill. I resent reading that this is easy or that all bricklayers are stupid. I do general building, oak framing, some arb work and quite a lot of milling in season and each job has its challenges. And to the op he's your father in law it's his job to rib you. Suck it up with respect. I'm sure he had to work a little harder when he had a young family to raise. Do you intend to work as hard your whole life. I'm 37 and in a position where 4 days a week is enough for me. I have no desire to go back to 6 or 7 long days a week.
