i know it pisses you off when you think you are working for some one that some one else says ,oh hes as sound as a pound, but what they failed to tell you is they are as tight as a ducks arse, iv had it several times last one was a log customer, made a brew when got there and talked about getting another load off me but when he went to get money, he couldnt find it as Mrs must of took it so he went for check book and Mrs had taken that as well, i will drop it off for you he told me, 3 wk later still no payment, so rang him and he hung up after i told him who i was, about 4 months later i see this volvo parked up in a car park at a forest enterance, i slam on and just roll back BASC and a dog is for life sticker in back window thats Barrys i thought and if its got a dent n scrape on NS front wing its definatly his, picked bins up and had a scan up track and about 4-500 mtrs up track there is a guy walking up the hill with his springers its Barry i watched him till he went out of sight had a good look around no other cars or people about 45 seconds later 4 deflating tyres on his volvo and to replace them would be more than £80, i would take his £200 and wait several months and get your revenge and satisfaction some other way that would hurt him more in the pocket than you asked for, i so Barrys car about 3 wks after on a super market car park with 4 new tyres on it and as i was going in he was coming out and i asked him for my £80 he got his wallet out and gave me what paper money he had £55 all he could say was i forgot all about that and then he asked me if i would deliver him some more, i reminded him about hanging up on me and me having to waiting near on 12 mth for only part payment go fuck yourself,

Homeowner Slightly Larger Saw - Stihl 260 or ???
spuddog0507 replied to aesmith's topic in Chainsaws
i know a guy up in north yorks with 3/4 brand new 260s in the boxes he aquired them several years ago when a dealer retired and the lucky basket got them at cost, will he sell me one NO he wont, -
when you bought them did you not get a small jar of meindl boot care (dubin/wax) in the box with them ? if not its some sort of dubin or neatsfoot oil which is a oil that is applied to horses hooves to make em shine my last pair of boots now 5 year old where always done with neatsfoot oil and have lasted well, started to fall apart inside now but still wearing them and the soles still have good tread on but its forestry work so all ways on the soft stuff and not tarmac,

Hi if your logs where cut and split befor march they should be sub 20% anyway, with the summer we had there should be no need for any one to import kiln dried and with the ever increasing threat of global warming the heat going in to the atmosphere is getting beyond the joke even here in the uk, 2 people i know are on the RHI payment sceam one guy put 2 boilers in to heat his work shop no insulation in roof, 20x16 roller shutter doors open all day long and his RHI goverment payment is now paying a 850 K mortgage, all right for some, and another thing that gets me about climate change is the Osmonds had a hit in the early 70s with crazy horses which was all about bid gas guzzling cars polluting the atmosphere and here we are 45 years later and not a lot but a bit done about it but now they decide to pay people to heat the atmosphere,,,

Durable fencing timbers? Do they exist anymore..
spuddog0507 replied to Matthew Storrs's topic in Landscaping
larch has a good reputation for being durable out in the weather, milled some 3" square ones for a guy about 7/8 yrs ago he got them treated and then stood them in 45 gall drums in creosote for a couple of wks then turned them over and put in another drum with oil and creosote mixed 50/50 and did the bottom said he had been doing it for many years and there was some post and rail fencing on the farm that had been there 40+ yrs but he does go round every year with a knap sack sprayer spraying it all. -
OK but no one has mentioned ringing trees up only you, and if i was to ring them up which i dont i would go and get a bigger saw out, i just drop and process 2,5, 3,1, 3,7, & 4,9 and as stihlmad said for an occasional user buying a big saw that may sit idol for months is not a good investment, when the 661 came in i bought a 660 of a local dealer about 3 years ago and i bet it has not had 25ltrs of fuel through it just gets used now and then,
-
Why would you need a saw with 461/462 30" bar to take down 20-30" trees ? take that sized tree down regularly and only use a 241 14" bar and 261 with 16" bar ,2 461s one with 20" bar and one with 25" bar sit in truck day in day out and only come out now and then, reason why it takes so much more effort to lug a big saw round all day on a steep bank and a 461/462 would be no good on a 30" bar the 2 461s we have are quite a way apart and only 5" different on bar size and i dont pick up the one with 25" on it very often.

spuddog0507 replied to Steve Bullman's topic in General chat
yes but in that case its us who are using the saws on a daily pro basis that is selling them to the private sector and we get nowt, got 2 echo dealers near us and had a serious look at them a few wk ago so next saw may be a echo,, but i did buy a new pair of saw boots a few months ago and in the box was about 10 orange flavoured sweets with stihl on the wrappers. -

spuddog0507 replied to Steve Bullman's topic in General chat
so if you go and spend a grand on a 462 661 880 you get fuck all, sounds about right buying 2 or 3 pro saws a year not one micky mouse fart box every 10 year and you get nowt, a big thank you to stihl UK, -
it was NPTC and as you said you have to do a theory test as by the book, and both you and i know you can read as many books as you want , but you will not learn it like you will actually doing it hands on, trainer came for 2 and a half days charged my man for 1 day and came on the morning of accessment to talk to the accesser and to watch and learn a bit from him , he has all so been coming with us now and then (free of charge) on clearfell sites to bring his self up to standard as he put it, and yes agree trainers/acessors that are any good seem to be thin on the ground these days i personally know about 8 trainers 2 i would not give them time of day, 1 just sees it as a power trip, 1 is like a old women, 1 fafs and farts about and makes it last all day 1 is ok and 2 of them are sound as pound and these 2 i try to get if i can but i think every one else in the NW has the same idea , and yes my man did pass,
-
sorry about this but this is my thoughts on training and accessing, a person who wants to become a trainer/ accessor has to work in the industry for 5 yrs min, so you go and do your CS30/31 and say work one day a month cutting trees/using a saw but when 5 years are up you want to become a trainer, you sit a exam and you pass it, and now you are a fully qualified trainer but in the 50-60 days over 5 years that you have worked with trees what have you realiy learnt ? you have had your ticket 5 yrs but you ain,t worked much more than a couple of monthes in the job but yet you passed your exam and became a fully qualified trainer, we can all talk and bullshit our way through life but one good example of this point was a guy who worked with us did his CS32, i spent a few days with him showing him what to do and he picked it up quickly , then when the guy who was training him turned up on the following monday it was the pupil showing and telling the trainer how to do it, i watched this and fetched and carried stuff about i,e hammer wedges winch etc on this particular day and the trainer asked me several times if it was being done right , so my main point on this is this guy has got a certificate that says he is a fully qualified trainer and is allowed to charge £300+ for his days service but hasent got much idea of what he is doing is a very poor sevice and the trainer openly addmitted that he had very little to do with CS32 sized trees, and i think this is one of the reasons why the standards have dropped in the industry please correct me if i am wrong on this,
-
a 2-21/2 ft butt is a nice size tree to drop as it can be done with a small saw and bar and not knowing where the bar is in the tree is just in expieriance and thats the point when things start to go wrong
-
HIi i think i would of picked a better photo if i was touting for work/ info on this subject not a good stance and to be stood on severed stems with a possibilaty of rolling is a big NO NO for me, WHY is the root plate not severed off ? if it was not much chance of it righting itself when you are reducing tree back, and i think the market for what your after is very limited in the UK, we sub to a major forestry co and after a big storm we could be busy on windblown for a couple of days or a couple of weeks but more than likley 1 2 3 days and thats it in the big storm of 86 ish when it flattened thousands of trees in the uk ever one who was capable of using a chainsaw was doing and it didnt take that long to clear things up,
-
yes agree with what your saying on this one from never having a saw in your hand, you can book a ten day course for about 2 grand and walk away with CS 30,31,32,34, & 35 ok 30/31 yes but to progress to 32 is a little insane and for a total novice to be let loose on a fresh windblown site with only the expierance of doing a 2 day course plus accesment is total maddness and a seirious accident waiting to happen and for the more expierianced lads on here we all know if you put a newbie in to windblown he wont get much done in a day as he would be scratching his head and trying to calm his self down most of the time after a but end just missing his head by not reading the situation correctly so WHY is it not still 2 yrs any one know why and when this was changed ,
-
-
2 or 3 steps is enough but by the time you get to 4 steps you will be all most be behind your next tree to fell so no problem, if i had to walk 10 steps away from every tree i would be f - - - - d by dinner time , when we where felling infected larch the tree that i had just cut had not yet hit the ground and i was half way through doing the gob cut on next tree if i had to take ten steps away then 6 back how much would that cost me every day ? i would be doing less than half of a normal day,

yes i know sea transport is very cheap about 6 mths ago i was fishing on a boat and a guy who came as a guest arranged sea transport and i was shocked when he told me that a container with 20 tonne in it transported from china to uk would cost less than £1 a tonne its loading /unloading and docking fees that cost and then he told me 20ft container would cost about £120 to get on to a dock side in the uk then road haulage to destination and when you compare the size of container to a uk posted letter it makes the postal service look expensive ,

work this out if you can ? as i cant,,, we export chip to europe but we import round wood to chip for power stations from the USA canada sweden and finland and they say its carbon nuetral HOW can this be ?? the carbon foot print must be massive, boat loads of logs from sweden and finland coming to uk and then boat loads of chip going to holland passing and waving to each other in the north sea ? have they not got chippers in scandinavia ? or if you was involved in running the country and was trying to reduce the total carbon foot print for the uk would this practice tick any boxes ??? but you would of probably been to oxford or cambridge for your education !!!!!!!! thick f- - - - - s..

Alpine tractors for low impact forestry
spuddog0507 replied to Big J's topic in Forestry and Woodland management
yes i will agree on that one a holder i have always looked up on as a mini county, and just as countys the holders will run rings round other tractors in there class, the only problem with holders are they are like rocking horse shit to find , people buy them and just dont sell i think i have only come across about 3 for sale and i think they where all bar one across the water on the continent -
Hi what pull rate is the winch ? and what is the drum capacity 30 40 50 mtrs of 12mm ? i think i would be looking at the orange man made rope myself much lighter and easier to drag about as compared to steel cable, my igland has 95 mtrs of 9mm steel on it and once you get 40=50 mtrs out its bloody hard work pulling that about,
-
one drum is still sealed so i am happy to use that but i will mix it with new 50/50 and the other is opened with about a ltr missing price on one drum is £29.95

Hi all may be a bit of a dumb question this ? does 2 stroke oil have a shelf life or not, as been rooting in the back of shed and found 2 5 ltr drums of stihl 2 stroke oil (the red stuff) so thats mineral based oil, don,t know how long its been there 3 4 5 6 years may be more, i cant even remember putting it there (age thing) looked on label on drum and cant find anything about shelf life or date of manufacture can any one shed any light on this please ,
