  1. Well got some interesting news today, while having a conversation with one of the forest managers from one of the UK,s major forestry companys he said that them and a few other big forestry companys are going to drive the price of timber up for biomass as every load of chip is spoken for before felling liecence is applied for he all so said this will all so applie to saw logs and fencing matierals its not here yet but 18 months 2 years it will be and they will be taking smaller trees to suit the biomass market like 15 - 20 year old = smaller machines and lower costs for harvesting , and this applies to both hardwood and softwood and they are all so doing some growth trials with euquliptess and some strains of popular, so if you have a bit of room and can stock pile a bit of timber it may pay dividends,
  2. Well it has, soft wood prices have never been as good as they are now for years, £43 tonne R/S for softwood chip, bent shity twisty stuff and wood that is rotten on the outside this would of been left behind in recent years but now there is a demand for it and it seems to have a decent value, 3,7 mtr spruce sawlogs again R/S £65 tonne 3 years ago they where £28 tonne R/S and chip was £24 tonne delivered in, I for one just find enough hardwood for my own log customers but just recently have secured a few small hardwood clear fell and thinning jobs from 80 - 200 tonne so if hardwood firewood is £60 - £70 tonne R/S i might just make a few quid for a change,
  3. Gary i believe that poland and lithuainia are cutting and exporting timber at a alarming rate that by the year 2025 there wont be that much left, so that is not from a substainable source at all.
  4. you was doing some work in your garden last week ? when you wanted the chainsaw boots , now your doing the occasional shift with some groundwork guys but not using a chainsaw ? why would you want to wear a pair of chainsaw trousers for ground work ? twice as heavey when dry as a pair of work pants and about ten times heavier when piss wet through ,beats me this one ,, next week you will be on the cadge for a helmet and climbing kit to prune your grannys apple tree and then week after you will be wanting a chainsaw or two, ? ? ?,
  5. NOW before you all shoot me down, my thoughts on kiln dried logs from over the water are a big NO for me the reasons why are as a island nation we used to be fairly free from diesiese both amongst animals and plant life but as time goes on we seem to have more and more issuses first of all we have lost a lot of our larch trees due to pytothera , the first case in the UK was in the southwest not that far from that big green house called the eden project, where we imported all these fancey plants, shrubs and trees from abroad then pytothera is found in the SW then spreads up through wales the northwest and up the west coast in to scotland , i for one spent over 2 years felling to waste infected larch and what a waste of good timber that was, so did that come from the eden project ???? i did raise the issie with the FC and they said they would investigate , and then we have that other great invention called the channel tunnel linking use to mainland europe and then we get this thing called ash die back that first appeared in the SE so did that come through there ? both great projects under that great leader toss pot Tony Blair , so back to importing kiln dried logs what will be the next big tree diesese we bring in to our country ? as there will be one, so for me its a no on importing logs sorry but just my thoughts.
  6. yes done my best to get some customers to buy in the summer monthes by offering then the timber at reduced rates through may june july and august but not many seem to bite ? why i dont know, may be its as they are going on holiday and havent got the money or its money they dont need to spend untill the wood is really needed ? and trying to get some of them to change from just hardwood to either a 50/50 mix or just move to softwoods like larch and douglas seems like a major task, they tell me softwood is crap but when i do then a delivery the log store is half full of cut up pallets and fence posts which they tell me burn really well but a bit quick, i have left a small bag of larch with a few customers and asked then to burn it on its own and then i get phone call , them logs you left i used them last night they where fine burnt well plenty of heat and no ash what where they , larch i replied and this is a customer that has told me for years that softwood is crap now got him converted to 1 50/50 load and 1 load of larch/douglas ,
  7. how many tonne do you want ?
  8. i have 4 out of about 60 log customers who buy good quantities of logs (4 - 7 cube) in june july some buy after the first couple nights frost and then its about 2 wk before christmas for the rest of them with the odd prick ringing at 8pm on dec 23rd asking if i can get a load of logs delivered tomorrow for christmas , IF only we could educate customers to buy early ? but i think we would have more chance of walking on the sun than the above happening,
  9. new trailer or second hand ? just plug both feed and return pipes in to spool block on tractor and you should be fine all them tractors should be well on top of the job
  10. hi 241 is a fully blown pro saw been using one for last 5 years as my main go to saw for thinning and general use, 14" bar on it and all ways seemed to be a gutsy little saw, bought it new in march 2013 when i got a 2 year job felling to waste infected larch on some steep banks and just wanted a saw i could use all day with little effort and when looking through the brochers the 241 seemed to catch my eye been very little trouble at all and it has had some use, but yesterday while in the hands of a subbie it gave up the ghost dont know whats up with it yet but will find out this week when i get a spar hour,
  11. spectrum plant hire , hire out road tow self drive processors or used to ? in warrington i think.
  12. running hot with cap off , no thermostat , rad is clean and you can see water being moved round , pointing to several things hear, as some one said pourous liners cracked head / warped head or head gasket gone NO WATER IN OIL ? one thing i would do is run it up and put pressure in to rad with a air line while running , did this with a old bedford van that was running hotter than normal after fitting another rad and it was just air in system some where but putting air line in cured it then put about 3 pints of water in it,
  13. have you tried it with out rad cap on ? and if you took cap off when hot is it pressurising the system ?
  14. yes i agree with alot of the above, estates no, small harvesting crews like myself no, but the big harvesting crews will have to have it and one harvesting crew i spoke to said they would put a partition in the back of sprinter van fit old elec shower and shower tray wont be piped or wired up but its there and they have hot n cold water plus toilet in caravan, and harvester driver came up with some good info and that was as the FC management team is getting smaller there seems to be more decisions being made alot quicker than befor.
  15. hi been working with a HSE guy for last 2 days and this has cropped up in conversation and his answer was, That if the FC bring it in, all the other major forestry companies like Tilhill, Euroforest etc will follow ,
  16. when you have removed the plug turn engine over if it turns over 360 degrees with out plug in ? check that it is the correct plug for the machine ? they may have put the wrong spec plug in it , some one brought me a rtrimmer that was doing same thing ok short reach plug in it but slackend it off about 3 turns and engine turned over fully put a different plug in and it was fine,
  17. better get a drink as well and may be some tissues and oh could you bring a dictionary please,
  18. WHO said i was doing it ? because it was not me, and i am not predicting the future to either you or myself or any one else , just because some guy on a HS day mentions something does not mean i will be doing it , i will probably be the last to do it and as drinksloe said there are some stupid rules about and some one some where will be thinking up even more stupider rules and i aint going over the top son but ignorance is bliss
  19. cumbria is a big county ? which end as there is a guy in preston .
  20. NO its not horseshit, its coming and we will have to follow suit, and if you read the post i quoted ? yes its got nothing to do with refresher courses but you might find its got a lot to do with how things have and are changing all the time, when some of us started there was no such thing as chainsaw tickets and very little PPE the younger generations have PPE , HSE drummed in to them but in these days common sense is becoming more and more scarce,
  21. photos video would be good to see J i await with interest along with many others,
  22. changed, its changing every month, just been on a HS day welfare is now coming in to forestry dont know about arb as you would not be far from faciliteys, or in other words working in forestry, we will have to supply employes and sub contractors with hot & cold running water, clean place to eat,and a thunderbox (mobile toilet that you see on events) if the job is more than 3 days ? so if your site base is 800 yds up a 45 degree banking by the time you get to the thunderbox you would proberbly be looking for clean under wear ? several years ago me and another lad had a disgussion about this and we both said that one day you would have to have a NPTC ticket to have a shit in the woods, WELL BY THE LOOK OF THINGS ITS ON ITS WAY, dont know who would want to ascess this but some one will for £350 a day.
  23. hi if your using it mainly for dismantles and stood on spikes i would be looking at the saw weight / power output and go for best weight/power out put that suits you, and as for heated handles my view is they are a total waist of time and if you need heated handles your not doing enough,
  24. i will go with steve on this got both 460 & 461 both fantastic saws run both on 20" bars, there does not seem to be much between them if anything the older 460 has the edge as it screems but that may of been tweeked at some point in its life, the new 462 has some very good reviews on youtube and people speak highly of it, go for it but are they out on the uk yet.
  25. thats the one expert ? i think , got 2 of them ones ok and one i ran over with tractor,
