  1. Word of warning in the current economic climate that someone I know ordered online and paid in full two weeks ago for a couple of Michelins from a large well known tyre firm as it would be at least £60 less than going in to the garage and various excuses still being made as to when in stock. (I am told Trading Standard will be involved on Monday by close of business)
  2. Nasa/BBC/Norwegian/Danish weather sites do interesting long term forecasts and are talking about some snow and cold towards the end of 2011. There is La Nina/El Nino which is going weird at present compared to last two wintertimes. Snow often seems to arrive around a full moon time.
  3. Thanks I have had a good look at them all and see that now. So some people can still tow the horse to a show provided not winning a prize which is classed as a reward. It will be interesting to see how the different VOSA areas read the rules/laws. Still means all those Ford Transits can drive around collecting waste metal and overloaded with no mesh over the load and not be stopped at all.
  4. Which one? I think there have been several different posts/threads on this to date.
  5. Practice. Practice. Practice. Then move onto a twin axle with a turntable at the drawbar end.
  6. Downsize to a diesel Fiat Panda 4x4/diesel Suzuki Jimny/diesel VW Caddy SWB 4-Motion with a small lightweight towed unit for log deliveries. Alternative is find a site with much passing traffic and sell direct at weekends. OL site application is advertised in the local papers and people have been known to complain.
  7. Someone used to produce one in light Green plastic for use when brushcutting I think might have been Oregon. (like Yellow glasses for driving in snow)
  8. I have asked HMRC for several years if it would allow the various makes/brands of this fuel type to be sold direct to legal tree business as then it can also be traced like "Red" diesel. (This would also reduce the wholesale prices. (Response:- NO!) The boss man in Scotland that deals with this at HMRC said a high profile case offered perhaps via MP's who make the laws would work hence the reason of the post I did before. Like red diesel some people will always use it in road going vehicles no matter the laws. Out of interest I wanted to know the price pf Aspen 2 Takk in France/Slovakia/Czech Republic as noticed sold there now.
  9. It takes less muscles to smile than it does to frown and makes people around smile.
  10. S L O W compared to last two seasons but there is a last moment panic before Christmas as most people are leisure use and order a single CM3 at a time. Think some snow will arrive the second week of December.
  11. We used a couple of Clydesdales in the woods for years. (steep difficult ground with rubbbish trees no one else wants to work in) Then from the roadside a Mowi Skog 8 with 6 metre crane back to base. Towing vehicle could also move the horses to place of work in all weathers. Horses are cheap to insure and run compared to small machines, reproduce the next generation, can be worked by voice, have high ground clearance, provide manure to mix with leaves to make tree planting compost. We make our own extraction tools which keep the methods modern. We use special shoes for the conditions. The crane and log trailer was expensive to purchase but has been reliable. Towing vehicle was sourced from the NATO sales and expensive but a long term investment.
  12. Seen the Oxdale working on Oak/Ash and looked OK. Kubota no idea.
  13. We often had an open canoe on site. Makes the work more fun. I agree with "Charlieh" the EA/NRA would want no debris left in to cause flow problems but normal felling into water edge and removal standard works. We have to use Bio-chain oils as terms of contract.
  14. NO in response to the original post. Witching is also know as Trolling/Flames I am told? 366 new posts since the last visit. How on earth do the forum mods cope with all that never mind checking the pictures? The one problem I see that effects most tree business is the people that steal instead of working hard to earn an honest living. I had a call this afternoon from someone that often drives past the workbase and "noticed" we have stacks of wood. Could he come in and have some for free?:w00t: Then said all tree people are paid for the work and the wood is a perk. Priced a contract a while ago and was told to take value of logs taken off site into account.
  15. The Cleveland Truckbox is £567.00 and the Trucksafe is £934. Then £65 deliveries charge. Must be a more cost effective box made?
  16. Loads of boltcroppers:001_rolleyes:
  17. Mind the Eastern Brown snakes which look like strips of long bark until it moves! There are some great wildlife parks where all Australian wildlife can be viewed close up. Some interesting viewpoints across the bush (should that be woodlands)
  18. What is classed as small scale extraction? Length of trees and distance in woodland and where is the wood going to?
  19. The rope will do much the same as material does from chainsaws clothing around a clutch and might damage bearings. Sending in a dead Goat? The person climbing should make sure the ropes are a safe distance from a hazard like a chipping machine. (I always have a small razor sharp rescue knife even on the ground in case of possible problems) Ground workers should be trained to feed material from the sides of a machine not direct in front. Wear close fitting clothing including gloves and use the railways type Hi-Viz as these are designed to break up if snagged on brash. Perhaps a human heat sensor/emergency stop button in the centre of the infeed hopper which would stop the machine is something the HSE/people that produce the machines should discuss. One tragic loss is too much.
  20. Thanks for the advice. We had been waiting for weeks on a certain contract and been told still deciding on who when called them last week. I noticed some websites did mention the lowest price would be the price chosen. These links might be useful to those looking elsewhere for work. https://www.sell2wales.co.uk/ Public Contracts Scotland - Home Some do give the details of who has won.
  21. We have 20M and 80M but do river bank - rock terrain work where the normal ropes sustain damage. Do oil often through the holes and keep spare shear pins in the handle. Attachments need to be rated same strength as the Tirfor or will break with drastic reactions.
  22. I was meaning Agricultural/Forestry operations/produce and should have been more clear with wording. Private tree surgery use is different where even the vehicle chipping has to run on white according to the HMRC/VOSA/Insurance. The various people like AA NFU FCA HMRC DVLA VOSA all did a good PDF with the rules and which is allowed and when to avoid confusion. Too much abuse will result in the German method where all fuel is white and one has to claim the tax back with all the additional paperwork. HMRC do check from the fuel suppliers who is using large amounts of fuel and then turn up to check vehicles. If using vehicle for highway hedges and trees then "Red" diesel is fine.
  23. Link did not work?
  24. One can legally take wood back to the base from the place of extraction provided it is owned and not haulage for someone else. (vehicles like JCB Fastrac/Unimog/Bedford... have load beds and the NFU insure to do this with VOSA/HMRC knowledge) The same for Agricultural produce like bales/carrots... direct back to base from the fields harvested. Cannot use an Agricultural/Forestry classed vehicle to haul a mini digger on a loadloader to a private garden! Vehicle could then be impounded and large fines.
