  1. Is it common for tree surgery business to sell wood to firewood producers? The reason I asked is saw a local well know tree firm unloading lumps in a strange roadside place from one Ford Transit into the back of a second vehicle belonging to a local firewood sales firm. That might explain the price of firewood if being handled several times.
  2. This was terrible news with those young children and we have friends who live in that area but there is much more to this than possible damp firewood. The woman had consumed much booze, the house had no working smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, no spark guard on the openfire place. The wood could have been cut from the garden and I have supplied public houses before with well seasoned wood and then found left outside still inside the bulk sacks and soaking up the rain. Willow can produce sparks small enough to go through a mesh guard.
  3. The Post Office and The Co-Operative Bank. The WORSE is the Natwest!!!! I can remember when interest rates on small business loans were around 12% and we were forced to have insurance on the loan. Needless we do not invest hard earned funds into them now.
  4. Mole drain the whole site and then make two vehicle tracks with road plannings alongside the upper hedgerow and no more problems.
  5. No British chainsaws...........
  6. I had an old A65 which I started the business with and tried Aspen direct from Norway in this with much smoke and coughing then with some carb fiddling runs nice now and piston is clean. The 242 XPG's had been run from new on Aspen with the single issue being weeping from the fuel cap seals which I am sure is down to Husqvarna as it depends on the colour of the seals. 395XPG used for large trees and milling on a logosol has run from new on this without problems although now using a different green 2 stroke fuel source. 240R Brushcutter ran from new on the Aspen and with basic servicing still runs fine having done huge hours of constant work. I have read the mixture specs was changed as the colour also so no idea if this could be causing problems on some saws. I know Aspen keeps for a long time but would be interested to know how long it is stored at the main warehouse before being forwarded to the distribution people. When mixing normal petrol and oils there are considerable differences which do cause running issues. I service all the saws with hearing/running first and then check with the rev counter to make sure. Someone mentioned motomix is that a real green fuel like Aspen?
  7. Supermarket milk trolleys work well until on soft ground.
  8. Do you use on of those discs with chainsaw teeth on?
  9. That was confusing posting a picture from a different area. Hedge laying is good interesting work. Large bonfires and potatoes in foil. Thorns snag in the fingers for years.
  10. I drove around this area of Scotland in summertime and there is a serious problem from this weed but often on very steep terrain besides roads.
  11. Two methods we use:- A cloth with warm water dipped into the ashes inside the stove and some elbow grease. Fire up stove with some good seasoned willow and pine to burn of the remaining problem.
  12. Looking at the picture the animals have been using the hedge for a wind shelter. (see where snow has been trampled) There is also a white electric fence wire which could be simple to move out into the field. Horses and cattle like to keep wind of the main body which the unlaid hedge will do. A new laid hedge will keep sheep warm but nothing else. Don't get me started on worming methods and worm counts.
  13. "Frog" is the soft section under a horse hoof which can result in a lame animal if thorns damage this area. Cutting the gate could result in the horses straying onto the public road and you being liable for accidents. Just some advice to same more hassle
  14. Have you considered the horses are using the hedge for shelter as that is the area churned up? RSPCA often not aware of animals suffering and unless you know horses would you also know and ill animal? Worm burden will be very high with that number of horses even removing the muck.
  15. I had a single Clydesdale on 12 acres whilst working full time and one could see where he had eated it down. Several possible issues:- Who has control of the access gate and locking? Could use the field on the other side of the hedge? Sounds like you might have a bill for frog damage from thorns and a claim on the insurance if the person is a hassle. Check the rental agreement paperwork she has before going in.
  16. The forecast for Thursday evening and Friday morning in the Midlands looks interesting with severe gales and much snow and drifting. If the amount of recent rain meets the cold air here could be 40CM of snow. Best wax the cross country skis then.
  17. The problem to most people is the high price despite being a good product both for saws and the person using the Aspen. Selling in small cans makes no sense to all. (storage problems/shipping/price on each can/disposal of cans/use in the woods and on site) 20ltrs barrels and 200ltrs drums is the direction it should go. It is like that in Sweden and Norway so should be here but do not understand the reason unable to have here.
  18. Sell all the pieces with lumps and knots in as these take much more time to burn.
  19. I still think of her as that even after all those years.
  20. Last week the mistress was on a late bus and at Buxton a man in his 20's boarded and the mature driver told him the ticket was incorrect and he proceeded to seat himself direct behind the driver and refuse to move and was abusive / loud mouthed / refusing to leave / threats at the driver. The driver called the police as he was in a town who attended. When the police arrived and removed him no one apart from her was willing to give a statement. (The people were all cowards and the men and women who operate public transport deserve support from the public whilst doing a difficult work) On Sunday I told some Gypsies who arrived in a Ford Transit with old metal on the back to stop walking on a neighbours drive to look around as building work going on and was given verbal abuse and told I was going to have trouble. Told them not scared of people like them and too clear off or I would remove them which they both did. (reported the details to the local police) TOO LITTLE respect for fellow humans in the UK at present and if some of these scum are given rough treatment then tough luck. (need some more Clint Eastwoods) If I saw someone being mugged/a woman being attacked I would always step in and help.
  21. Would not like to on the sea as last time waves as high as a house.
