  1. Well we looked at a site for a local council and the nameless office based person had marked them with Yellow Dots/Red Dots/White Crosses. (Nightmare to price!!) I think if one cannot work out which trees need to come out on site you should not be using a chainsaw in the woods. I like to leave the trees/woodland much better than before we started.
  2. I can see issues with confirming which tree the wood came from in a large heap in a barn. "Forestry" is sustainable but "Tree Surgery" waste is often NOT as it comes from private gardens and new trees are not planted to replace the ones removed. We always fell firewood in wintertime when the sap has stopped and leave it to air dry for a whole season. However often the storage people use makes a nonsence of the moisture rates we deliver in at. (Like outside on the ground under a plastic tarp) I would be interested to know if Pine and Spruce is considered suitable for fuel in the UK like it is is Norway/Sweden.
  3. I have used a HydroCut "2" Corkscrew log splitting machine and was interested to know is there are more firms that produce this type of machine. (Finland/Austria?) The HC2 would do all sizes of wood and with ease although slow. New price seems expensive for a basic PTO item.
  4. Steel kilns waste a large amount of wood in the production. (Like the original soil clamp) Much better idea is a retort which wastes little fuel and enables collection of wood oils/tars to use for additional purposes.
  5. Fine tool for logging work. (Worth running a good flat file over the tip to keep it safe)
  6. We always sell in CUBIC METRE's. (That's because we sell seasoned wood to happy people) If we sold in the ton I would want fresh felled oak and leave it in a river for a week. Moisture content will change a little depending on weather and season.
  7. I think all the rotten scum who steal from small business should have the hands/feet/eyes removed. We had a serious problem with some "Gypsies" (Legal Fact) and although the local Police/CPS had DNA and knew who it was did not take more action. Take as much time as possible with cautions in securing property even on work sites and ALWAYS mark it in numerous places and take photographs. I would be interested in a remote/mobile CCTV system that sends details to a mobile phone if someone has details.
  8. Clearview 650 with water heater system. (Can load this stove in the morning and will still be going when home late with a pan of stew on the top) Jotul. (Designed for Norwegian wintertime where life could depend on it working at -33C) Homemade gas bottle version!! (Fun to use in the woods)
  9. Who will gain from this? The person doing all the hard work in the woods? More like some office based scheme like FSC which raises the overall prices to customers. I attended a meeting at the National Forest and views there were waste of time.
  10. New to this interesting forum but been in the trade for 20+ seasons. I have checked all the PDF's from DVLA/VOSA and all vehicles unladen 1525KG and trailers 1020KG have to be "O" licenced and have an electronic "Spy in the Cabin" if used to earn a living with. (A Land Rover 90 Pickup is over this unladen weight) The reason we all have to do this paperwork and needless costs to small business is to keep the civil servants in work. I have stuck in Agriculture/Forestry although the income monies is less than Tree Surgery as there is much less hassle. We can legally run a machine with no MOT/TAX and low insurance and tow two trailers to a site!!
