  1. Thursday's storm seems to be worse on the latest info. Much snow in some areas. Bad in Derbyshire this evening.
  2. Weekly checking of tyre pressures on all vehicles. Business signs on vehicle instead of Yellow Pages. I keep small works until a weekend and give the person a rate on the phone and go to do it instead of pricing and going back again. One price for cash payment when work complete. (I do declare the amount and give a full Invoice) Extra increased price for direct account payment within 14 days. High price for 30 days settlement terms. Avoid peak travel traffic times.
  3. 20' ISO Flat Rack with a good canvas tarp. Keeps the rain off and allows wind and sun. Can be used for fencing stakes/panels.
  4. I have used the normal screw thread plastic versions (can also be used for drains with attachments) and works well on difficult sections provided one remembers to turn the direction the thread tightens. The natural bristle brushes worked much better than plastic but cannot find a source now.
  5. Some farms in Holland are using methane now to power the machines/produce electric. (like a large pointed canvas on top of a silo to catch the gases) I had no idea coal was used to burn woodchips?
  6. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT's) More reliable. Safe in storms. Little noise compared to the propeller versions. Windside - Home There are two small versions at Ikea in Nottingham for those interested in wind energy.
  7. There is a spate of diesel being stolen in the Derbyshire/Staffordshire/Nottinghamshire areas with plastic tanks having a hole being drilled in and the fuel sucked out. Numerous vehicles in large carparks are also having the CAT cut off the exhaust system whilst the person is shopping so be aware. The local Police here have an E-mail alert system to inform small business of the crime trends.
  8. Vehicle has been recovered and a local man aged 28 been charged with stealing.
  9. Should use VAWT's as much more reliable and do not have this problem in high winds. More common than people know.
  10. I used the BMI as an instance as it gives the considered min/max health weights and some people are underweight without realising the harm. Yes I understand does not take into account if one is 6'8" tall and built like a barn. Jogging is bad for ankle and knee but loads of people do that. Cycling and swimming are good all round.
  11. Ordered this afternoon some more winter grade Gas Oil (Agricultural Red Diesel) and current price was 66p a litre on 500LTRS:001_rolleyes: How does that compared to different areas?
  12. Why does it need to be removed? Planting undertaken on site and let it degrade to provide for the next generation of trees.
  13. Method I saw was a section of marine plyboard with some sharp nails in and covered in leaves. Person said most thieves wear training shoes and will then be able to have a DNA sample. Drastic measures but he had been done numerous times.
  14. OH ER. I was thinking like a sustainable bank that invests funds into local business. I could never understand so called FSC approved charcoal which wass produced in Africa and shipped to the UK. Regarding a small modern ATV machine v a large trained draught animal and taking all into account then the horse economics are more viable long term compared to the machine. I had done both for a long time and will stick to the tried and tested methods.
  15. DMI - Vejrkort Hope no one is killed from the falling trees which seem to land on vehicles on the roads in times like this.
  16. BBC - Health: BMI calculator (imperial)
  17. I am aware of councils in some areas because of the economic climate and the risk of being made redundant picking on small business. The two items that might cause a problem are using Polytunnels for wood storage instead of growing crops and purchasing wood instead of felling your own from the property. How much sawing do you do in a week and method of moving the wood onto site? (large trucks?) Is there a close house with folks that have moved from the cities and do not understand the rural working life? The holding needs to be registered and Tree Surgery is not considered Agricultural/Forestry in planning and often industrial. Is it visible from a footpath/public highway? NFU will give some free advice but do not respond until written to again.
  18. The simple but old fashioned pole trailer like in the video. Winch the trees on with the double drum winch.
  19. Random blaze with an axe is an acceptable method leaving the best trees standing. Looked at one council site and someone from the office had marked the trees with Yellow/White dots. Black crosses. Orange circles. This was on different sides of the trees!!
  20. How sustainable do we all think the wood business is and where can improvements be made that increase income without damage to the place we like to work in? The reason is everyone these times seems to claim a "Green" business.
  21. I would write a polite letter with an Invoice to the head of the council pointing out the damage and with pictures. Include that council staff should not be operating within 10 metres of property that could be damaged and check the equipment was with the correct guards and maintenance schedules. (mention HSE breaches/Public Risks) Make an FOI at the same time on how many times damage has been reported to them in different cases and if it paid out or their insurance. Tell them five working days to settle and if not small claims court. Suggest to avoid future problems it needs to erect a tall wooden fence along the council boundaries. A telephone call to the local newspaper works well. I am as careful as possible but broke a greenhouse window once. Owned up and fixed the glass. (Still have them as good customers) Councils are nightmares to deal with.
  22. I wish someone would bring back the metal ones which last.
  23. Various roads closed here overnight and much ice now melting. Black ice due over the next week. We have installed the winter tyres from last season on the vehicles at the weekend.
  24. Banana's and olive oil in the diet. Diving gloves keep hands warm. (not driving)
