  1. the best way is to look at the trees themselves. take the book with you on walks and id trees that you come across. that way you see the trees in their environment in the different seasons. in time you'll be able to look ata woodland or tree at half a mile and tell what species it is. same applies to fungi. take a book out with you and try and id what you find.

  4. that's just the thing. cover all bases, free, roped. he'll grow up with it second nature
  5. why is it inappropriate? I paid respects to those that might care about him. Because someone has died should we alter what we think about him. Granted i sould be inappropriate to send a letter to his wife saying that but this is a forum on arboriculture... surely

  6. you can't get them climbing too early if tehy want to climb. My lad could climb the steps to the slide before he could walk from the bottom back to the steps. He had to crawl. Round and round and round he went. Got him climbing trees free with me close by or on his own if they're lil and grass landing
  7. hey steve,

I know that post of mine might be blunt but its not disrespectful. surely its a fair attitude to have that warrents discussion?

  8. terrible news for the mans family and friends.
  9. is that what i think it is? ... a rip to the ground? inspiration indeed still what do kids care when climbing. nice shots.
  10. Monday, can't think, erm... heading to gatebeck. Can't remember the incident. Probably thought it was me paying the phone too much attention. I thought you were a carnforth lad?

  12. hey JP & hodge, fancy going three ways on this?
  13. looks good for you paul
  14. it's a tourist thing. there's better oaks about that have more dignity. Joe public don't know about them though... alls the better for it too.
  15. peak stamina is reached for men in their thirties. You don't need peak aerobic fitness for this job so much as endurance and skill. Age isn't a limitation. the mind is. IMO personality and application is more important then age
  16. When it's good it a great job. Few better. A lets face it, most of us feel more of a man then the next in a pub when asked what we do. There's kudos in what we do. I climb, and love every minute i'm off the ground. It's going to attract lots of people to the trade. Combined with colleges churning out people with tickets And cowboys bang bang out for the buck. Is therer any surprise there's lots of competition. Supply and demand. .
  17. I've been wondering if next time you had a big job on with some hobbs lowering and such going on too, if you'd let me come in as a groundie for you jp, just to see how you do things and learn what i can off you?

  18. just PM'd you with some more details. Can get a picture up tomorrow.
  19. there's a tractor in the back ground. did you winch/pull it over? or did you just use your wedges. If just the wedges i can understand you wanting to get some weight of the house side.
  20. it great to feel the love
  21. that seems very reasonable. what rate do others charge
  22. having a hard time learning to love mine... but i'm getting there
  23. was that your action or just found. Nice skills if it was you. Great shrapnel and after shock.
  24. There is an huge beech trunk in a very public space available to carve. Hundreds of tourist pass evry day. The Community doesn't have a lot of money to spend ~() but could put up some cash. It would be a great show piece to promote your work. The trunk is well over 1m dbh and straight up to 7 m tall retaining its girth with a wide union at its top. Positioned beneath ornamental gardens, waterfall and meditation gardens. I've been asked to put it forward to the form to see if there are any takers?
  25. contact rodney holland. he's just down the road. he's a pro and a gent. look up his web site
